Lightroom vs Photoshop: Which Adobe App Do Your Photos Need?

Lightroom suits photographers who shoot a lot and need to sort, edit and organise whole libraries quickly, with presets and Assisted Culling to pick your strongest shots. Photoshop suits people who build images: removing objects, blending people into new backgrounds, adding graphics and text. If you mostly improve photos, start with Lightroom; if you mostly create or rebuild images, start with Photoshop.

Both come from Adobe, so the question isn't which company to trust, it's which job you're doing. I read Adobe's Lightroom page, its Lightroom plans page and its Photoshop page, and everything below comes from them.

What Lightroom is for

Adobe describes Lightroom as photo editing and organising for desktop, web and mobile. You can remove what doesn't belong, recover lost detail, and apply presets across all your photos in seconds. It keeps a growing library organised and searchable, so finding one shot among hundreds doesn't take forever.

Two tools stood out on Adobe's page. Assisted Culling scores every photo on sharpness, focus and open eyes, then leaves the final picks to you. Generative upscale with Topaz Gigapixel, including 4x upscaling, recovers clarity in low-resolution photos so you can crop in without losing detail.

What Photoshop is for

Photoshop is where you make images, not just improve them. Adobe's page leads with new adjustment layers for Clarity and Dehaze and Grain, Firefly models behind Generative Fill, Expand and the Remove Tool, and Harmonize, which blends people and objects into a new background by matching light, shadow and colour.

You also get sharper subject selection and background removal, partner upscaling from Topaz Labs, and Photoshop on desktop, web and mobile. The Photoshop plan includes Adobe Express Premium for quick social graphics and templates.

The plan detail worth checking

Here's what I found on Adobe's own plans page. The Lightroom plan includes Lightroom Classic too, with 1TB of cloud storage and 250 monthly generative credits. Adobe's Photography plan puts Lightroom, Lightroom Classic and Photoshop together, with 1TB and 1,000 monthly generative credits. On its own, the Photoshop plan lists 100GB and 25 generative credits.

So the choice isn't always one or the other. If you need Photoshop's editing and Lightroom's library, the Photography plan exists to cover both, and its storage matches the Lightroom plan.

Think about where your photos live as well. Lightroom works across mobile, desktop and web, so you can cull on your phone and finish the edit on a laptop, while Lightroom Classic suits people who keep their library on one computer. Photoshop runs on desktop, web and mobile too, but its job starts once you've chosen the shot.

Both apps sit inside Adobe's wider set. Adobe's menus list Firefly for AI content, Express for quick designs and Premiere for video alongside Lightroom and Photoshop, and Creative Cloud Pro brings more than 20 apps together if you need them all. For a photographer, though, the real decision is whether you need a library tool, an editing tool or both.

Who each app suits

Lightroom suits wedding, event and product photographers and anyone with a phone full of shots to sort. Photoshop suits designers, marketers making ad creative and anyone retouching or compositing images. My advice on Lightroom or Photoshop

Look at what you did with your last ten photos. If you sorted them, fixed the light and exported them, Lightroom's free trial is your starting point. If you cut someone out, swapped a background or added text, start with Photoshop's trial. If it's both, compare the Photography plan on Adobe's page before you choose two separate apps.

Do you make photo editing tools? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place in comparisons like this one.
