Is VLC Safe? Who Makes It, Privacy and Fake Downloads (2026)

VLC is a real, long-running media player coordinated by VideoLAN, a non-profit organisation, and its official site says it has no spyware, no ads and no user tracking. The catch is where you download it: fake VLC installers exist, so get it only from videolan.org or your device's official app store, and keep it updated.

VLC is one of those programs half the people I know have installed without thinking about it, so when someone asks whether it's safe, they're usually worried about a dodgy download rather than the player itself. I've gone through what VideoLAN says about itself, how it handles security reports and what the public record shows, so you know what to trust and what to avoid.

Who makes VLC and where it comes from

According to Wikipedia, VLC is coordinated by VideoLAN, a non-profit organization, and the project began as a French academic project in 1996. The first release came on February 1, 2001 under the GNU General Public License. That's a long track record for a free program, and the code is open for anyone to read.

VideoLAN's own legal page adds that it's an association under French law and that its work is volunteer-based, with no profits distributed to leaders or members. So there's no advertising business behind the player to push you towards extras, which is a big reason people trust it.

What VideoLAN says about VLC's privacy and ads

The official VLC page makes a plain claim: the software has no spyware, no ads and no user tracking. It also describes VLC as a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player. Those are the vendor's own words, and I can't prove them for you, but open source code does mean outsiders can inspect it.

The same page says VLC plays most codecs with no codec packs needed. That matters for safety, because many people end up with malware by hunting for a separate codec download to make a video play. If a website tells you that you need a special codec pack for VLC, treat it with suspicion.

How VideoLAN handles VLC security problems

No program is free of bugs, and media players are a common target because they open files from all over the internet. What matters is how problems are handled. VideoLAN publishes VLC Security Bulletins tied to each VLC release, and it says it doesn't issue security advisories for the underlying third party libraries, pointing readers to those projects instead.

Its security page also asks people to report issues responsibly and says signed emails are welcome. Keeping VLC up to date is the practical lesson: new releases are where fixes arrive, so don't leave an old copy running for years.

Where to download VLC safely

This is the part that decides whether your install is safe. VLC's official download page is hosted on videolan.org and lists builds for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and Apple TV. On phones and tablets, the official app stores are the other safe route.

  • Type videolan.org yourself rather than clicking an advert at the top of a search page.
  • Pick the build for your system from the official download page.
  • Be wary of any site that wraps VLC in its own downloader or asks you to install extras.
  • Delete a file you got from a link in an email, a pop-up or a forum.
  • Update from VLC itself or from the official site, not from a banner telling you your player is out of date.

Fake download sites are a bigger risk than the real player. If you've already run something suspicious, my guide on checking whether an account has been hacked covers the first things to look at.

VLC's past: the India block and the EU bug bounty

Two public episodes are worth knowing about, and neither suggests the player is a scam. Wikipedia reports that VideoLAN said its website was blocked in India from 13 February, in 2022, and that the ban was removed later in 2022 without any reason given for the original block.

Wikipedia also says that in 2017 the European Parliament approved a budget funding a bug bounty program for VLC, to improve the EU's IT infrastructure. A bounty is a payment to researchers who find and report flaws, which is the sort of scrutiny you want for software that opens files from strangers.

The catch: VLC is safe software, but your files might not be

VLC is legal and free to use. What you play in the player is a separate question. Downloading copyrighted films or shows without permission isn't legal, and the malware risk usually comes from the files and sites, not the player. A video file that asks you to install a codec, update or plugin before it will play is a warning sign.

  • Only open media from sources you trust.
  • Never run an installer that arrives alongside a video file.
  • Keep your operating system and VLC updated.
  • Use unusual behaviour, like a video asking for extra downloads, as your cue to stop.

My verdict on VLC

In short, VLC is safe software from a real non-profit with a long history, and its official site says it has no spyware, no ads and no tracking. The risk sits around it: fake downloads, files that ask you to install something and out-of-date copies. Get it from videolan.org or an official app store, update it and treat pirated or odd files with care.
