Yes, Trello is free. The Free plan works for up to 10 collaborators per Workspace and includes unlimited cards, up to 10 boards per Workspace, unlimited Power-Ups and unlimited storage with a 10MB limit per file.
Trello is the simple, card-based project tool loved by solo business owners, content teams and anyone who likes to see their work laid out as a board. The free plan is still one of the most generous around, but it's got a couple of limits that matter more than they look.
What Trello's Free plan includes
Trello's plans page lists these as included in Free:
- Up to 10 collaborators per Workspace.
- Unlimited cards.
- Up to 10 boards per Workspace.
- Unlimited Power-Ups per board, which are Trello's add-ons and integrations.
- Unlimited storage, with a 10MB limit per file.
- 250 Workspace command runs per month for automation.
- Quick capture of to-dos from email, Slack and Teams, plus an Inbox.
- Assignees, due dates, custom backgrounds and stickers, an unlimited activity log, mobile apps and two-factor authentication.
Trello Free vs Standard vs Premium
| Feature | Free | Standard | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boards | Up to 10 per Workspace | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| File size limit | 10MB | 250MB | 250MB |
| Workspace command runs | 250 monthly | 1,000 monthly | Unlimited |
| Planner | View only | Full access | Full access |
| Calendar, Timeline, Table, Dashboard and Map views | No | No | Yes |
| Custom Fields | No | Yes | Yes |
The Trello limits that matter
The 10-board limit is the one you'll feel first. It's per Workspace, so if you give every client or project its own board, you'll run out quickly. One workaround is to use fewer, broader boards, with a list or label for each client, rather than a board each.
The second is automation. Trello's automation runs are counted as Workspace command runs, and the Free plan includes 250 of them each month. If you set up rules that fire every time a card moves, those runs disappear faster than you'd think.
The third is files. The 10MB limit per file is fine for documents and images but too small for most videos, so link to video files stored elsewhere rather than uploading them to a card.
Power-Ups and quick capture on the free plan
Two free features are easy to overlook. Power-Ups are unlimited on every board, so you can connect the tools you already use without hitting a cap. And quick capture lets you send to-dos from email, Slack and Teams into your Trello Inbox, then sort them onto boards later. For a busy business owner, that Inbox is often the most useful part of the whole plan.
What you don't get on Free
The extra views are a Premium feature. If you want to see your cards on a calendar, a timeline, a table or a dashboard, that's Premium. Free and Standard are board-first. On Free, the Planner, which shows your scheduled cards on a calendar, is view-only.
What Standard and Premium add
Standard is the next step up. Alongside unlimited boards and 250MB files, Trello lists advanced checklists, card mirroring, Custom Fields, list colours, collapsible lists, single board guests, saved searches and AI-powered quick capture. Premium adds the extra views, unlimited command runs, admin and security features, Workspace-level templates, collections, observers and simple data export.
For most solo businesses, the jump that matters is boards and file size. If neither is a problem, Free does the job.
How to set up Trello's free plan well
- Create one Workspace for your business and invite up to 10 collaborators.
- Plan your boards before you build them, so you stay under the 10-board limit.
- Use lists for stages, such as To do, Doing and Done.
- Use labels for clients or categories instead of extra boards.
- Add one or two Power-Ups you'll use every week, such as a calendar or a file storage connection.
- Keep automation rules simple so you stay inside 250 command runs.
If you're new to the tool, my guide on how to use Trello covers the setup in more detail. If boards suit the way you think, this guide to a free kanban board explains the method behind it.
A simple Trello setup for a small business
- Board 1, Clients: one list per stage, one card per client, labels for service type.
- Board 2, Content: Ideas, Writing, Ready and Published lists.
- Board 3, Admin: recurring jobs such as reports, renewals and deadlines.
- Board 4, Personal: your own to-dos, so they don't clutter the team boards.
Four boards leaves you six spare under the free limit, which is plenty of room to grow. When a client project finishes, archive the card rather than the board, so your structure stays the same and you never creep towards the limit.

Who Trello's free plan suits
Trello Free suits solo business owners and small teams who like a visual board, keep their projects fairly simple and want to share them with a handful of people. Ten collaborators is a lot for a free plan, which makes it a good fit for a small business with freelancers.
It suits you less if you manage lots of separate projects, rely on automation or want timelines and dashboards. That's where Standard and Premium come in.
My verdict: Trello is free, and for small teams the free plan goes a long way. Plan your boards carefully to stay inside the 10-board limit, keep automation light, and you may never need to upgrade.
