Sudowrite isn't free long term, but you can try it free. Its pricing page offers a free trial with no credit card needed and cancel anytime. After that you choose a paid plan: as of October 2026, Hobby and Student starts at $10 a month billed yearly or $19 billed monthly.
Sudowrite is an AI writing tool built for fiction writers, with its own story models alongside dozens of others. Because it's aimed at novelists rather than general writing, the plans are measured in credits rather than words. Here's what each plan includes and how to make the trial count.
Sudowrite plans and prices, as of October 2026
| Plan | Billed yearly | Billed monthly | Credits a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hobby and Student | $10 a month | $19 a month | 225,000 |
| Professional | $22 a month | $29 a month | 1,000,000 |
| Max | $44 a month | $59 a month | 2,000,000 |
Every plan includes Write, Rewrite, Describe and Expand, Sudowrite's fiction models Muse and Ballad, and more than 30 other models. Professional and Max add developmental edits, line edits and beta reads, which is the feedback side of the tool. On Max, unused credits roll over for 12 months.
The yearly vs monthly gap
Sudowrite's monthly prices are much higher than its yearly ones. Hobby and Student costs $19 a month if you pay monthly against $10 a month billed yearly, so paying monthly for a full year costs nearly twice as much as paying up front. If you're writing a single book over a few months, monthly is still cheaper overall. If you write all year, yearly saves you more than the price of a month of Professional.
What to test in the Sudowrite free trial
- Paste in a chapter you've already written, so you're testing on your own voice.
- Try Describe on a flat scene and Rewrite on a paragraph you're unhappy with.
- Ask the chat to brainstorm a plot problem you're stuck on.
- If you write a series, check how it handles continuity with your existing characters.
- Note how quickly you use credits, so you know which plan you'd need.
You can write in almost any language, and Sudowrite says it'll match your language when it offers suggestions, though some features may fall back on English when it isn't sure.
Will Sudowrite copy other people's writing?
It's a common worry. Sudowrite's FAQ says the AI works by guessing one word, or part of a word, at a time based on patterns learned from huge amounts of text, rather than copying and pasting chunks. It says that makes it very unlikely to reproduce the same words verbatim. You're still the author, so edit everything it suggests until it reads like you.
Free alternatives if you don't want a subscription
If you only need help with the odd scene, a general chatbot will do some of the same jobs. My guide to whether ChatGPT is free explains what you get without paying, and my comparison of Sudowrite alternatives covers other fiction tools.
Who owns what you write in Sudowrite
This is the question to ask any writing tool. Sudowrite's FAQ says it claims no rights over anything you put into it or anything it generates for you. It also says it doesn't use your writing to train Sudowrite or OpenAI's models. If you cancel, you keep access to your projects, but you can't use the AI features without a paid plan, so your manuscript isn't held hostage.
Under the hood, Sudowrite says it uses dozens of models, including Anthropic's latest Claude models, several OpenAI models, open source models and its own fiction model, Muse. To cancel, you go to your subscription page and hit cancel, with no phone call needed.
Is using Sudowrite cheating?
Sudowrite answers that on its own pricing page. It says it's a tool for creativity, not meant to write for you, but to help you improve and speed up your writing, like a writing partner you bounce ideas off when you're stuck.
On plagiarism, its FAQ is specific. Sudowrite says it won't plagiarise unless you force it to, which is against its terms, and the only way to do that is to paste in text it's seen before word for word, such as famous song lyrics or the opening of a bestselling novel. As long as your own writing is original, it says you'll get more original writing back, and it encourages you to run a plagiarism checker to verify your results.
Which Sudowrite plan suits which writer
- Writing for fun, for school or a first draft: Hobby and Student.
- Working on a novel or screenplay and wanting feedback: Professional.
- Publishing several books a year and banking credits: Max.
My verdict: is Sudowrite free?
No, but the free trial is a fair test because it needs no card. Use it on your own manuscript, watch your credit use, then pick a plan. For most hobby writers, Hobby and Student at $10 a month billed yearly is enough as of October 2026. Professional is worth it if you want the developmental and line edit feedback, and Max only if you're publishing several books a year.
