Best AI Book Writers: 11 Tools for Authors and Experts

The best AI book writers help you plan, draft or improve a book, from fiction co-writers that expand scenes to non-fiction generators that build a draft from your own material. Some don't write at all and give feedback on your manuscript instead. Eleven options follow in no particular order.

Plenty of business owners have a book in them. A guide for clients, a story behind the business, or the method you explain on every sales call that deserves to be written down, once and well.

The eleven tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If you need a nudge to start, my book writing prompts are a gentle way in.

What Amazon KDP asks you to declare about AI

If you plan to self-publish on Kindle, this matters more than which tool you pick. Amazon KDP's content guidelines require you to tell it about AI-generated text, images or translations when you publish a new book or edit an existing one.

You're not required to disclose AI-assisted content, which KDP defines as work you created yourself and then edited, refined, error-checked or brainstormed with AI tools. If an AI tool created the actual content, it counts as AI-generated even if you edited it heavily afterwards.

Co-writer, generator or editor?

These tools do very different jobs. Fiction co-writers help you brainstorm and expand scenes while you stay in charge of the story. Non-fiction generators produce long drafts from an outline or your sources. Analytical tools read what you've written and comment on plot, pacing or clarity.

The one you choose shapes how much of the book is yours, which matters for your voice and for what you declare when you publish.

Questions to ask before you write with AI

  1. Do I want help writing, or feedback on what I've written?
  2. Is the book fiction or non-fiction?
  3. Can it use my own notes, transcripts or sources?
  4. Can I export to the formats my publisher or KDP needs?
  5. Who owns the text it produces?
  6. Will I be able to tell which parts AI wrote?

Signs your AI-written book needs more of you

  • Every chapter sounds the same. Add your own stories.
  • There are no real examples. Readers want your experience.
  • You can't explain a section yourself. Rewrite it until you can.
  • Facts aren't checked. Verify every claim before publishing.

Do you make an AI book writing tool? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on choosing an AI book writer

Let AI do the heavy lifting on structure and first drafts, but put your own stories, examples and opinions on every page. Readers buy a business book for the author's experience, and that's the one thing no tool can make up for you.

Keep simple notes on what AI wrote and what you wrote as you go, so publishing is easy. If you're heading to Kindle, my guide to publishing on Amazon KDP from the UK covers the next steps.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI book writer?

An AI book writer is software that helps plan, draft or improve a book, from generating chapters to expanding scenes or giving feedback on a manuscript.

Are there free AI book writing tools?

Some offer free plans or open source versions. The free plan column above shows what each tool's own site says.

Does Amazon need to know if I used AI?

KDP requires you to declare AI-generated text, images or translations, but not AI-assisted work that you created and only edited or brainstormed with AI.

Can AI write a whole non-fiction book?

Some tools can produce a long draft, but a book that sells usually needs your own expertise, stories and editing on top.

Is AI good for fiction writing?

Fiction co-writers can help with brainstorming, description and stuck scenes, while you keep control of the plot and characters.

Which tool gives feedback without writing for me?

Analytical tools read your manuscript and comment on plot, pacing and character without generating new text.
