Yes, Knowt has a free plan. Knowt's Basic plan costs nothing and includes unlimited file creation, live collaboration and storage, and its flashcards come with unlimited learn mode for free; the AI summarizers, voice tutor and ad-free experience are part of the paid Ultra plan.
That's the reason so many students switch to Knowt from Quizlet: the flashcard studying that other apps put behind a paywall is free here. Below is exactly what Knowt says is free, what Ultra adds, what it costs and the refund rule worth knowing before you start a trial. Everything comes from Knowt's own pages, checked as of October 2026.
What's in Knowt's free plan
Knowt's plans page lists Basic as free with no cost. It includes unlimited file creation, live collaboration and storage, and access to browse 5 million resources made by other students. Knowt's home page adds that you can create, share and study flashcards completely free with unlimited learn mode, and it offers unlimited problems in its Practice Test Room and Free-Response Room.
You can also bring your existing study sets with you. Knowt says Quizlet flashcards can be imported in two clicks with images and formatting, and it imports from Wayground, Kahoot and YouTube too.

| Ads | Yes | Ad-free |

How much Knowt Ultra costs
As of October 2026 Knowt lists two ways to pay for Ultra:
- Ultra Annual: $149.99 billed upfront, which Knowt shows as $12.99 a month, with a 3 day free trial.
- Ultra Monthly: $24.99 billed every month.
The difference is bigger than it looks. Paying monthly for a full year costs far more than the annual plan, because the monthly price is almost double the annual plan's per-month figure. If you know you'll use Ultra through the school year, annual is the cheaper route. If you only need it around exams, monthly lets you stop when you're done.
Knowt's AI tools in plain terms
Knowt's home page describes the AI side of the app, and these are the tools the plans page places in Ultra:
- Lecture summarizer: record a live lecture and Knowt creates notes, flashcards, tests and interactive games from it.
- Kai, the voice tutor: quizzes you on your materials out loud, or turns any note or flashcard set into a podcast.
- PDF and file summarizer: upload up to 30 files, including PDFs, images, videos, slides and audio, and get notes, flashcards and practice tests.
- Video summarizer: find or upload a YouTube video and turn it into study material.
- Exam prep: AP, ACT and SAT study plans, mock exams, unit practice and progress tracking.
The home page also describes an Exam Predictor and Planner, where you upload your syllabus and course files and get a study plan based on what your professor emphasises. If you're on the free plan and one of these tools asks you to upgrade, that's the Ultra line.
Teachers get their own view of the plans page, and Knowt says YouTube videos can be turned into live games, assessments, flashcards, notes or monitored chats for a class.
Knowt's refund rule
Knowt's FAQ says that within 24 hours of a purchase or renewal it refunds the full subscription amount, minus transaction fees, and refunds take 5 to 10 business days to appear. There are two exceptions to know about. Purchases made on iOS or Android can't be refunded by Knowt, so you'd go through Apple or Google instead. And once you redeem the promotional coins subscribers receive for merchandise in the Knowt shop, the subscription is no longer eligible for a refund.
How to cancel Knowt auto-renewal
- Open Settings in Knowt and go to Your Plan.
- Click Cancel Subscription.
- Fill in the short form about why you're cancelling.
- Submit it. Your plan won't renew at the end of the billing cycle.
How to move from Quizlet to Knowt for free
- Find the flashcard set you already use on Quizlet.
- Use Knowt's Quizlet import, which Knowt says takes two clicks and keeps images and formatting.
- Study the set with Knowt's free learn mode, free practice test mode and free games.
- If you'd rather start from your own material, upload lecture notes or videos and let Knowt make flashcards, though the AI summarizers are part of Ultra.

Is Knowt a good free alternative to Quizlet?
For flashcards, yes. Knowt calls itself a free Quizlet alternative, and the free learn mode is the main reason. On its home page it says at least 700,000 of 1.3 million students used Knowt for the May 2025 AP season. If you're weighing the two, my guide to whether Quizlet is free covers what Quizlet keeps behind its paywall, and my roundup of Quizlet alternatives compares the other options. My verdict: is Knowt free?
Yes, and the free plan is good enough for most students. Unlimited flashcards, learn mode, practice tests and imports from Quizlet are all free. You'd pay for Ultra if you want the AI tools that turn lectures, PDFs and slides into notes and tests, or full AP, SAT and ACT prep. As of October 2026 that's $149.99 a year or $24.99 a month, so pick annual if you'll use it all year.
