Free Google Docs Templates (2026): Where They Hide and Which Ones Business Users Get

The short version: free Google Docs templates live in the Template Gallery at the top of the Docs home screen and in File, New, From a template inside any document. Google's own templates cover resumes, letters, proposals and more, and some business templates only appear when you're signed in with a work or school account.

Google Docs templates are one of those features people use for years without realising how much is there. You open Docs, start a blank page and rebuild the same proposal layout again. Meanwhile there's a gallery of ready-made documents sitting one click away, and a second set of templates that only shows up in a menu most people never open.

Where to find Google Docs templates

There are four main places, in no particular order:

  • The Template Gallery: best for Google-created templates like resumes, letters and order forms, from the Docs home screen.
  • File, New, From a template: best for inserting a template into a document you've already got open.
  • Your organisation's templates: best for branded proposals and reports your company has set up, if it supports them.
  • Make a copy of a shared file: best for reusing a document a colleague or client already formatted.

Google templates are available in 22 languages, from Catalan and Hindi to Turkish and Vietnamese, so check your language settings if the gallery looks thin.

Google's help page says you can use Google-created templates like resumes, letters and order forms. On a computer, go to Docs, click Template Gallery at the top right and pick the one you want. A copy opens, so the original template stays clean for next time. If you don't see the gallery, go to Menu, Settings and switch on Display recent templates on home screens.

The second route is the one most people miss. Inside an open document, click File, New, From a template, and you'll get a scrolling gallery of customisable templates. Google lists blog posts, press releases, business proposals and journals, plus project roadmaps and marketing plans for business users, interview guides, onboarding guides and training manuals for HR teams, and reading lists and class notes for education users. If your document already has content, the template opens in a new document tab.

Why some templates seem to be missing

Here's the catch. Google's help page says some template features are only available for work or school accounts. So if a colleague can see a marketing plan or onboarding guide template and you can't, check which account you're signed in with before you assume the template has gone.

There's a second layer for companies. Google Workspace lets organisations create branded templates for external documents like proposals and reports, but its own help page is clear that you can use this feature only if your organisation supports it. If you're the admin, that's worth setting up, because it stops every team member inventing their own version of the company proposal.

And when you'd rather reuse a document than a template, open it and click File, Make a copy. You can give it a new name, choose where to save it and decide whether to copy comments and suggestions too.

How to use a Google Docs template

  1. Open Google Docs on a computer and click Template Gallery at the top right.
  2. Pick a template; Google opens a copy so the original stays untouched.
  3. For business templates, open any document and click File, New, From a template.
  4. Check you're signed in with the right account if a template you expected isn't there.
  5. Replace the sample text and logo with your own, then rename the file.
  6. Save a finished version as your own starting point by using File, Make a copy each time.

Turning a template into your own system

The real time saver isn't the template itself, it's what you do after you've used it once. When a proposal, onboarding guide or meeting notes document works well, strip out the client details, keep the structure and save it in a folder called templates. Next time, open it and make a copy rather than starting again. If you work with a small team, share that folder so everyone starts from the same version, and agree who updates it when something changes. It sounds small, but a shared set of starting documents is how a tiny business ends up sounding consistent in every email, quote and report it sends, even on a busy week.

Getting more from Google's office apps

Templates are the quickest win in Docs, but there's plenty more to learn. My guide to making a brochure in Google Docs shows how far a template can stretch, and my Google Sheets tutorial covers the spreadsheet side. If Docs isn't quite right for you, see my list of Google Docs alternatives.

My verdict: use the Template Gallery for everyday documents, the File, New, From a template menu for business ones, and make your own master copy of anything you send more than twice. It's the fastest way to look organised without hiring anyone.
