Yes, Quizlet is free to use. You can create a free account, make flashcard sets and study them, but Quizlet says Learn mode is free only for a limited number of rounds per study set unless you have Quizlet Plus.
Quizlet is a flashcard and study app used by students, teachers and anyone learning something new, from a language to a pitch script. The free account covers the basics. The limits show up when you lean on the smarter study modes. There's also a free route to unlimited Learn and Test through a teacher's class, which Quizlet documents in its help centre. Here's how it all fits together.
What a free Quizlet account lets you do
- Sign up free with an email address, Apple ID, Google account or Facebook account.
- Create flashcard sets with terms, definitions and audio.
- Find and use sets made by other people, and share your own.
- Add images from Quizlet's free gallery to either side of a card, on the website.
- Study with Learn, for a limited number of rounds per study set.
- Build Answer Streaks, which Quizlet says are available to all learners inside Learn.
Quizlet Free vs Quizlet Plus
| Feature | Free | Quizlet Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Create and share flashcard sets | Yes | Yes |
| Learn mode | Limited rounds per study set | Yes |
| Images from the free gallery | Yes, on the website | Yes |
| Upload your own images | No | Yes |
| Diagram sets and rich text editing | No | Yes |
| Ad-free studying | No | Yes |
Quizlet Plus for teachers adds formative assessment tools so teachers can track how students are doing.
The free route to unlimited Learn and Test
This is the part worth knowing. Quizlet's help centre says students in a teacher's class get unlimited, ad-free access to Learn and Test modes when three things are true:
- They're logged in.
- They've been added to a class the teacher created.
- They're studying sets the teacher has added from the class page.
Quizlet adds that the class must be managed by a teacher account with admin permissions, and whoever creates the class is the admin automatically. So if you teach, run a training group or coach a team, you can create a free teacher account, set up a class and give your learners full study modes without anyone upgrading.
If students still hit a paywall on a class set, Quizlet suggests checking that they've been added to the class and are opening the set from the class page.
The catch: images and the mobile app
Quizlet's free image gallery only works on the website, not on a mobile device. Uploading your own images, such as a photo of a diagram from your notes, needs Quizlet Plus or Quizlet Plus for teachers. If your subject is visual, like anatomy or maps, build your sets on a computer and use the gallery, or plan for the upgrade.
Trying Quizlet Plus without getting caught out
Quizlet offers trials of its advanced features. Its help centre warns that when a trial ends, it rolls into the plan you chose, and it says to cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date if you don't want to continue. Where you cancel depends on where you signed up: the website, the Apple App Store or Google Play each have their own steps.

Getting the most from the free plan
- Use Flashcards for quick review. Save your limited Learn rounds for the sets you find hardest.
- Join your teacher's class if they have one, and open sets from the class page.
- Add pictures on the website, where the free gallery works.
- Search for an existing set before you build one. Someone may already have made a good one.

Ways to study on Quizlet
Quizlet's help centre says you can study eight different ways, from study activities to AI-powered study tools and step-by-step solutions. The free account gives you Flashcards and a taste of Learn. Answer Streaks sit inside Learn and, according to Quizlet, start after five correct answers in a row. If you switch question types, your streak resets to zero.
For schools, Quizlet for Schools is a separate school-wide option. Quizlet says each account in a Quizlet for Schools order gets Quizlet Plus or Quizlet Plus for teachers for one year, and accounts are ad-free.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
My verdict: Quizlet is free for making and reviewing flashcards, and that's enough for everyday revision. The smart move is the class route: if you teach or train people, set up a free class so they get unlimited Learn and Test. Upgrade only if you need your own images, diagrams or no ads.
