Is Jira Free? What Jira's Free Plan Covers for Small Teams

Yes, Jira has a free plan. Atlassian's plan comparison says Jira Free covers up to 10 users on one site, with Scrum and Kanban boards, a backlog, agile reporting, customisable workflows and automation, plus 2 GB of file storage and community support.

Jira is Atlassian's work tracker, built for software teams and also used to plan and track other kinds of projects. The Free plan isn't a trial. It's a permanent plan for small teams. Whether it's enough depends on three things: how many people need access, how many files you attach and what kind of support you need. Here's what you get and where the limits show.

What Jira's Free plan includes

  • Up to 10 users on a single site.
  • Scrum and Kanban boards to see work move from to-do to done.
  • A backlog for planning what comes next.
  • Agile reporting on how your team is doing.
  • Customisable workflows, so the stages match how your team works.
  • Apps and integrations, including the GitHub connection Atlassian documents.
  • Automation to take care of repetitive steps.
  • 2 GB of file storage and community support.

Premium and Enterprise sit above Standard, with unlimited storage and round-the-clock support for larger organisations.

The catch: 10 users and 2 GB

The user limit is a hard line. Atlassian lists Free at up to 10 users, so an eleventh person means moving the whole site to Standard. If you work with freelancers or clients who need to see the board, count them before you invite them, because every user counts.

Storage is the quieter limit. 2 GB can fill up quickly if your team attaches screenshots, design files and screen recordings to tasks. Link out to files kept in a shared drive rather than uploading every attachment, and you'll stay under it for longer.

Permissions are the third thing to know about. Atlassian has a separate support article on permission limitations in Free Jira sites, so if you need tight control over who can see which project, read it before you set up client access.

Jira Product Discovery has its own free plan

If you're looking at Jira Product Discovery, the idea and roadmap tool, its Free plan works differently. Atlassian lists three creators per site with unlimited contributors, 2 GB of file storage and 200 automation flow runs each month. Creators are the people who build and edit ideas, so the free plan suits a small product team with a wider group adding input.

How to set up Jira Free well

  1. Create a free Atlassian account and choose Jira.
  2. Pick a Scrum or Kanban template that matches how your team works.
  3. Invite only the people who need to update work, keeping you within 10 users.
  4. Set up one simple automation, such as moving a task when it's assigned.
  5. Store large files elsewhere and link to them, to protect your 2 GB.

If you're not sure whether to run sprints or a continuous board, my explainer on kanban vs scrum will help you pick the right template.

Is Jira the right free tool?

For software teams and anyone who likes structured workflows, Jira Free is strong because the core features aren't cut down. For a small marketing team or a solo business owner, it can feel heavier than you need. My guide to Jira alternatives covers simpler tools, several with free plans of their own.

Who Jira Free suits best

Jira Free suits a small software or product team that wants structured sprints, a backlog and reports without a plan to manage. Because the user limit is 10, it also works for a small agency team that tracks client work, as long as clients don't each need a login.

It's less suited to large client portals or to teams who store lots of files against tasks. In those cases, the 10 user line and the 2 GB of storage arrive quickly, and Standard's 250 GB and business hours support become the reason to move.

What Free doesn't include

Atlassian's comparison also lists administration and security features aimed at larger organisations, such as data residency, IP allowlisting and a sandbox for testing configuration changes, along with uptime SLAs on its higher plans. Check the comparison for which plan includes each one. For a team of up to 10, these are rarely the reason to move up, but they matter if a client asks how your project data is protected.

Moving between Free and Standard

Because Free and Standard both run on a single site with the same boards, backlog and workflows, moving up doesn't mean rebuilding your setup. The practical changes are the user limit, which rises from 10 to the much higher Standard limit, the storage, which rises from 2 GB to 250 GB, and the support level. Plan the move for when you're about to add the eleventh person, not after a new starter is locked out.

My verdict: Jira is free for teams of up to 10, and the Free plan includes the boards, backlog, reporting and automation that make Jira useful. Watch the user count and the 2 GB of storage, and move to Standard only when the team or the files outgrow them.
