Yes, Freepik is free to use, with one condition. Its terms say free use of its content is allowed as long as you credit the website and, where it applies, the creator. A Premium, Premium+ or Pro subscription removes the need to credit and opens the full Premium library and the AI tools.
Freepik has been the go-to site for free vectors, photos and PSDs for years, and it's quietly changed. Its pricing page now calls the business Magnific (formerly Freepik), and the paid plans are built around AI image, video and audio credits as much as stock downloads. Here's what's still free, what you have to do to use it, and what the paid plans add, from Freepik's own terms of use and pricing page, checked as of October 2026.
What you can use on Freepik for free
- The Free content library, for direct download and online editing
- Free use, as long as you give attribution to the website and, where it applies, the creator
- Downloads within the daily download limits shown on the website
- A free account, which is what you drop back to if you ever cancel a paid plan
The terms are clear that free use is "conditioned upon" attribution. That's the line most people skip. If you use a free Freepik image on your website, in a social post or in a client deck without the credit, you're outside the free licence.
What a paid Freepik plan adds
The terms list what subscribers get on top of the free version:
- Use of the content without attribution
- Access to all Free content and the whole selection of Premium content
- No specific download limits, apart from limits to stop fraud or abuse
- Priority support over free users
The pricing page adds the AI side: every paid plan includes access to image, video and audio models, a commercial AI licence, the Magnific upscalers and API access with credit-based usage.
Freepik plans compared
The pricing page shows three individual plans. Prices are set per country and shown in local currency, so I'm not quoting one figure here; check the page for yours.
| Plan | Who Freepik says it's for | What stands out |
|---|---|---|
| Premium | Individuals exploring AI tools and stock content | 250M+ Premium assets, yearly credits, commercial AI licence |
| Premium+ | Creatives who need unlimited generations and full AI access | Unlimited generations on some models, music rights, more credits |
| Pro | Professionals scaling content production | Everything in Premium+ with far larger yearly credit allowances |
The Freepik credit rules people miss
- Plan credits are given for the year and stay valid for a year, with no monthly resets, on the annual plans.
- Extra Credits you buy roll over to the next period, but they expire 3 years after you buy them.
- Extra Credits are only used while you keep an active subscription.
- If you cancel and go back to being a free user, any unused Extra Credits are cancelled with no refund.
- Prices on the pricing page exclude VAT and local taxes.
That fourth point is the one to remember. Top up with extra credits, cancel later, and you lose them. The pricing page does mention a 30-day refund guarantee and no cancellation fees, so read those terms if you're unsure about a plan.
How to use Freepik free and stay inside the rules
- Create a free account and filter your search to Free content.
- Check the licence note on each file before you download it.
- Add the credit Freepik asks for wherever you use the file, such as a caption, footer or credits slide.
- Keep an eye on your daily download limit.
- If you need files for client work without credits, or you want the AI tools, compare the three paid plans.
If Freepik's free licence doesn't fit what you're doing, my list of Freepik alternatives covers other stock and AI design sites, and I've also covered whether Canva is free if you mainly need templates.
What else changed when Freepik became Magnific
The pricing page now reads like an AI studio with a stock library attached. Paid plans list access to image, video and audio models, including Google Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro, Kling, Seedance and Veo, plus Spaces, a shared canvas for workflows, and the new Magnific One model with Brand Kit. Freepik also says there's no model training on your data on the paid plans.
- 250M+ photos, videos, vectors and PSDs on the paid plans
- Music, voice and sound effects generation
- Magnific MCP, plugins and Magnific for ComfyUI
- A Merchandise License is listed among the plan perks
Subscriptions are personal, too. The terms say a plan can't be transferred to anyone else, including another company in the same group, so an agency can't buy one plan and hand it round its team.
Is a paid Freepik plan worth it?
If you only need the occasional free vector and you're happy to credit it, stay free. If you make content for clients or ads, crediting every image gets awkward fast, and a paid plan is cheaper than the hassle. And if you want AI images and video too, the paid plans now bundle those credits in, which is where most of the value has moved.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Another place to make images is covered in Bing Image Creator limits.
My verdict: is Freepik free?
Yes, if you credit the source. Free content is free to use with attribution and within daily download limits. A Premium, Premium+ or Pro plan removes attribution, opens the Premium library and adds AI credits, now under the Magnific name. Use it free for personal projects, and pay when you need clean, uncredited files or the AI tools.
