Etsy Vacation Mode: What Pauses, What Still Bills and How to Clear It

Etsy Vacation Mode pauses new orders: your listings are hidden from search and can't be bought, but buyers can still visit your shop and message you. You switch it on in Shop Manager under Settings, Options, Vacation Mode, and it stays on until you turn it off.

Here's the catch. It pauses sales, not your bills. If you switch it on yourself, an Etsy Plus subscription keeps charging, auto-renew fees still apply if a listing expires and renews, the 4 month listing expiry keeps counting down, and Star Seller keeps evaluating you. If Etsy switches it on for you, the rules flip: you can't turn it off, but Plus and Pattern billing pause.

These rules come from Etsy's US help pages as of October 2026. Sellers in other countries may see local versions.

How to turn Vacation Mode on or off

  1. Go to Shop Manager and open Settings.
  2. Select Options.
  3. Open the Vacation Mode tab.
  4. Use the toggle to turn it on or off.
  5. Click Save.

In the Etsy Seller app, tap More, then Vacation Mode under Shop Settings, and slide the toggle. When you come back, your listings usually reappear in search within minutes of turning it off, though Etsy warns that search performance may change after a period of inactivity.

What buyers see while you're away

  • Your listings and Etsy Ads don't appear in search, although your shop may still show up if someone searches your exact shop name.
  • Your shop homepage hides your listings and shows your Vacation Announcement, About section, past reviews and any Star Seller badges you've earned.
  • Direct links to your listing pages show an Item unavailable notice.
  • Active Etsy Ads campaigns pause automatically, and Etsy Ads and Offsite Ads charges don't build up.

What you can still do in Shop Manager

Vacation Mode isn't a lockout. You keep Shop Manager, your shop stats and most shop settings. You can handle orders, cases and messages, issue refunds, cancel orders and print shipping labels. You can also edit and create listings: existing active listings still show as Active in Shop Manager, and new ones are saved as drafts. And you can still browse and buy from other shops.

The flip side is that your existing orders, cases and messages are still your job. You must fulfil the orders you already have.

The fees that keep running

  • New draft listings don't cost a listing fee until you publish them after you return.
  • Auto-renew fees are charged if auto-renew listings expire during Vacation Mode. You can switch auto-renew off.
  • Listings that aren't set to auto-renew expire after 4 months, and that countdown can't be paused.
  • An Etsy Plus subscription keeps billing, and unused listing or Ads credits expire at the end of the billing cycle.
  • A Pattern subscription keeps billing, and your Pattern site is paused too.

Two more billing rules. If your account becomes overdue while Vacation Mode is on, you have to pay the outstanding balance before you can reopen. And fees you built up before turning it on are still due on the first of the month.

Star Seller and the auto-reply tip

Vacation Mode doesn't pause Star Seller evaluation, and eligibility is based on your last 3 months of performance. Unanswered messages count against your response rate, but auto-replies count as responses. That's why the Vacation Mode auto-reply is worth setting up before you go.

You get two optional custom settings. A Vacation Announcement shows as a Note from the shop owner at the top of your homepage and replaces your usual shop announcement. An auto-reply goes to anyone who messages you and replaces any other active auto-replies. Buyers also see an option to get an email when your shop reopens, and you can't hide it. Don't use either message to send buyers to your own website, because that breaks Etsy's Off-Platform Transactions policy.

You switched it on vs Etsy switched it on

ItemYou switched it onEtsy switched it on
Turn it off yourselfYesNo, only Etsy can
Etsy Plus and Pattern feesKeep billingPaused, not billed
Auto-renew listing feesCharged if a listing renewsNo renewal fees
Star Seller badges on your homepageStill shownHidden, and may be lost for good

That last badge row matters. If you break a policy or fall below a threshold during an Etsy-imposed pause, you may lose your badges permanently.

How to clear Vacation Mode that Etsy switched on

When Etsy puts your shop in Vacation Mode, there's usually an account issue to fix first, and Etsy often turns it off automatically once that's resolved. The common reasons Etsy gives are missing or outdated taxpayer information, Payoneer verification issues, policy violations or listing issues, account security concerns, a high case rate or falling below customer service standards, and location-based restrictions.

  1. Check the email Etsy sent you.
  2. Look for a red or yellow alert banner in Shop Manager.
  3. Check your Finances page for errors on your legal and taxpayer information or bank account details. Pending verification can keep Vacation Mode on.
  4. Check your customer service stats for delayed shipments or open cases.
  5. If your account's eligible, appeal through the Appeals Center.

If you're paid through Payoneer, confirm your Payoneer details match Etsy and check Payoneer for pending tasks. Etsy says suspensions are typically lifted within 24-48 hours after Payoneer issues are resolved, and the two can show different statuses if verification data hasn't synced yet.

My verdict on Etsy Vacation Mode

Use it, but treat it as a pause on sales, not a pause on your shop. Before you switch it on, set the auto-reply so your response rate holds, turn off auto-renew on anything you don't want renewing, and check what your Plus subscription will bill while you're away. If Etsy switched it on, skip the toggle and go straight to the alert banner and your Finances page. If you're stepping away for good, that's a different process: here's how to close your Etsy shop and reopen it later. For the full list of charges, read how much Etsy takes from sellers.

Frequently asked questions

Does Etsy charge fees during Vacation Mode?

Some fees keep running if you switched it on yourself: Etsy Plus, Pattern, and auto-renew fees if listings expire and renew. If Etsy switched it on, Plus and Pattern billing pause and there are no renewal fees.

Can buyers see my shop in Vacation Mode?

Yes. They can visit your shop and message you, but your listings are hidden from search and can't be bought.

Does Vacation Mode affect Star Seller?

Star Seller evaluation keeps running. Unanswered messages count against your response rate, but auto-replies count as responses.

Why can't I turn off Vacation Mode on Etsy?

If Etsy put your shop in Vacation Mode, only Etsy can turn it off. Fix the account issue in the email or Shop Manager banner, and Etsy often turns it off automatically.

How long does it take Etsy to lift a Payoneer suspension?

Etsy says suspensions are typically lifted within 24-48 hours after the Payoneer issues are resolved.
