Afterpay is a real buy now, pay later company founded in 2014 in Sydney and acquired by Block in 2022. Its own page says Pay in 4 is interest-free at partner brands, but its agreement allows late fees of up to a set maximum per fee and up to 25% of the order value in total, so check the terms before you confirm.
Afterpay appears at the till of so many shops that it feels like part of the price. It isn't, it's a loan, and the details only matter once a payment goes wrong. I haven't used it, so I've read Afterpay's own how-it-works page and its installment agreement, and Wikipedia for the background. Where its help centre was behind a sign-in, I've said so.
Who is behind Afterpay
According to Wikipedia, Afterpay was founded in 2014 by Nick Molnar and Anthony Eisen in Sydney, and Block, formerly Square, completed its acquisition of the company in 2022. So it's an established brand with a large owner, not a one-off checkout widget.
How Afterpay Pay in 4 works
Afterpay's page says Pay in 4 is interest-free installments at partner brands. The first payment is due at checkout and the rest follow over time, generally spread over about six weeks. It adds that taxes and shipping are added at checkout and aren't included in the estimated payment amounts, so your total at the till may be higher than the figure you were first shown.
The page says you must be 18 or older and a US resident, and meet additional criteria. The installment agreement adds that all applications are subject to Afterpay's approval, and a down payment is required before disbursement. Eligible payment methods include a US-issued checking account, a credit or debit card, Cash App Card or Cash App Pay.
Afterpay late fees
This is where reading the agreement pays off. The installment agreement says a late fee applies if an installment remains unpaid for 10 days after its due date, or any longer grace period the law requires. Each late fee is up to a maximum of 8 US dollars and never more than the state's maximum late fee. Total late fees on one order can't exceed 25% of the order value at the time of purchase.
Rhode Island residents have no late fees, according to the agreement. The how-it-works page says there are no late fees when you pay on time, and that Afterpay will send reminders and cap late payments. So the fee is capped, but it's not zero, and several missed payments could add up.
What happens if you miss an Afterpay payment
The agreement is more serious about missed payments than the sales page. It says a missed payment makes you delinquent. Afterpay may then deem you in default and accelerate the agreement where the law allows, which means all remaining payments could become due. It may also limit, restrict, suspend or end your account access, and it may use third-party collection agencies.
- Set reminders for each due date, not just the first one.
- Use the app to track payments and reschedule dates, as the page describes.
- Contact Afterpay early if you can't make a payment, and keep a record of what you were told.
Does Afterpay charge interest or a finance fee?
For Pay in 4 at partner brands, Afterpay's page says it's always interest-free. But it also says a finance fee may apply to certain transactions, and that loans with a finance fee are issued by First Electronic Bank. Its example is a 110 US dollar loan at a 36% APR. So not every Afterpay plan is the same, and the screen at checkout is the one to read.
Does Afterpay affect your credit?
The agreement authorises Afterpay to obtain credit or consumer reports to assess eligibility and to service your account. It doesn't explicitly say that missed payments are reported to credit bureaus. A California disclosure in it states that a negative credit report may be submitted if you fail to meet your obligations. Rules vary, so read the section that applies where you live.

Spotting fake Afterpay messages
Because Afterpay sends payment reminders, scammers copy them. Be wary of messages with a link asking you to update your card, pay a "late fee" straight away or confirm a one-time code. Open the app or website yourself and check your payments there. Is Afterpay worth using?
Afterpay is a real company with a clear owner and written fee limits, and Pay in 4 is interest-free when you pay on time. The catch is that it's still credit: late fees apply, a missed payment can lead to default or account limits, and some plans carry a finance fee. Only use it if you can see how every instalment will be paid, and read the agreement for your situation.
