Instagram Statistics 2026: 40 Facts With Sources (Users, Reels, Stories, Engagement)

Instagram’s Help Centre confirms you can use up to 5 tags on a single post, whether that’s tagging people in a photo or a carousel. I tested this on client accounts and the limit holds firm across feed posts, though Stories and Reels have their own separate tagging rules. Going over 5 simply won’t let you add another tag, the option greys out. This cap exists to stop spammy tagging and keep posts looking genuine to real accounts rather than bots.

Instagram passed 3 billion monthly active users in 2025, reached 2 billion daily active users in 2026, and is used by half of all US adults. Those are the three numbers to remember. Everything below comes from Meta’s own earnings materials, the Instagram Help Center, Meta’s business and newsroom pages, or Pew Research Center, and every statistic links to the page it came from with the date it was reported. Where Meta reports a figure for its whole family of apps rather than Instagram alone, it says so.

Methodology and sources

Every figure on this page was taken directly from the source linked beside it on 17 August 2026, and each source URL was checked to be live the same day. Meta reports “family daily active people” rather than Instagram-only users in its press releases, so those figures are labelled as such. Meta for Business pages show survey figures without a date, so those are labelled with the date checked. Nothing here comes from a third-party estimate. If you need help finding a setting or a limit inside the app, the Instagram help hub covers the common questions, and if you are auditing who follows you back, use compare your Instagram followers and following.

If your question is a different Instagram one, the Instagram guide lists every answer I have written.

Frequently asked questions

How many people use Instagram in 2026?

Meta said Instagram passed 3 billion monthly active users in October 2025 and reached 2 billion daily active users in July 2026. Meta does not publish a more precise Instagram-only figure; its press releases report daily active people across all of its apps, which was 3.60 billion in June 2026.

What is a good Instagram engagement rate?

Meta does not publish an engagement rate benchmark. As a working guide, under 1% is low, 1% to 3% is typical for established accounts, 3% to 6% is good and above 6% is rare. Smaller accounts usually sit higher. Work yours out with the engagement rate calculator linked above and compare with accounts of a similar size.

How long can an Instagram Reel be?

Up to 3 minutes when recorded in the app, according to the Instagram Help Center. Reels published through the Instagram API can be up to 15 minutes and 300 MB.

Where do these Instagram statistics come from?

Meta’s quarterly earnings call transcripts and press releases, the Instagram Help Center, Meta’s developer documentation, Meta for Business pages, the Meta Newsroom and Pew Research Center. Each statistic links to its source and states the reporting date.
