Brigit is a real US finance app, now owned by Upbound Group, and its own pages say Instant Cash advances of 50 to 500 US dollars need a paid membership and approval. The catch is the record: in 2023 the FTC alleged Brigit's advance and cancellation claims were misleading, and Brigit agreed to pay 18 million US dollars toward refunds.
Cash advance apps are tempting when payday feels a long way off, and Brigit is one of the names that keeps coming up. Before you link a bank account to any of them, it's worth knowing who runs the app, what it charges and what the regulators have said. I've read Brigit's own explainer, Upbound Group's filing and the FTC's announcements, and I'll stick to what those say.
Who is behind Brigit
The company's legal name is Bridge IT, Inc. Upbound Group's annual filing says Upbound completed its acquisition of Brigit in 2025, on 31 January, and describes the business as a financial health technology company whose app offers Finance Helper, Deals and Offers, Instant Cash, Credit Builder and Identity Theft Protection. So Brigit is a named US company with a listed corporate parent, not a faceless app.
It isn't described as a bank in the sources I read. Brigit Credit Builder is a separate product, issued by bank partner Coastal Community Bank, Member FDIC, and Brigit's page says the two are separate. That page doesn't name a bank partner for Instant Cash, so I wouldn't assume deposit insurance applies to an advance.
How Brigit Instant Cash works
Brigit's own explainer says Instant Cash is a cash advance of 50 to 500 US dollars for members of its paid tiers, and that it differs from payday lenders because there's no interest and no hidden fees. Here's the process it describes:
- Link your primary checking account and verify your income.
- Brigit's algorithm reviews your average balance, your spending habits and whether paychecks arrive regularly.
- If you qualify, you accept an advance. Funds usually arrive in 2 to 3 days.
- Repayment is taken automatically on a due date, usually your next payday, although you can choose a different date.
The same page says not all members will qualify and that availability varies by state. Advances are subject to Brigit's approval and policies, so a subscription doesn't promise you an advance.
Brigit membership tiers and speed options
According to Brigit's page, there's a free basic tier with budgeting tools, then Plus at 8.99 US dollars per month, which adds Instant Cash, credit monitoring and identity theft protection. Premium is 15.99 US dollars per month and adds free express delivery. Without Premium, Express Delivery, which the page says gets most users their money within about 20 minutes, comes with a fee.
Prices change, and one of the FTC's documents refers to an earlier Plus subscription at a different amount, so check the in-app screen for the current terms before you sign up. Brigit's page also says you can request an extension on repayment for free.
The FTC's case against Brigit
This is the part that matters most for a legit question. In 2023 the FTC announced an action against Bridge It, Inc., which does business as Brigit. The FTC alleged that Brigit advertised instant cash advances of up to 250 US dollars, that advances were rarely that amount and many people received none, that it charged a 99 cent fee for transfers it had called free, and that it made cancelling hard. It said this violated the Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act.
Brigit agreed to pay 18 million US dollars to the FTC for consumer refunds under a proposed order. The order bars misleading claims about how much money is available, how fast it arrives, delivery fees and cancelling, and it requires clear subscription disclosures and a simple way to cancel. The complaint was filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
In 2024 the FTC announced more than 17 million US dollars in refunds going to 1,818,930 Brigit members who paid for instant cash advances. The FTC also says it never requires people to pay money or provide account information to get a refund, so anyone asking you to do so isn't the FTC.
What the Brigit case means for you
An agreement with a regulator is not a finding that a company is a fraud, and it doesn't tell you how the app works today. It does tell you what to look at closely. Read how much you'd be advanced, how quickly, what the membership costs and how to cancel, rather than relying on the headline number in an advert.

Scams that use the Brigit name
Fake support is common around cash advance apps. Brigit's pages describe an app that asks you to link your own checking account in the app and repays itself by automatic withdrawal. Nothing there describes support staff asking for gift cards, a code sent to you or a payment to release funds. If someone contacts you that way, stop, open the app yourself and use its in-app help. If you want to complain about an app, the FTC and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau both take reports.

Is Brigit worth considering?
Brigit is a real company with a clear explainer and a corporate owner. It also has a regulator-announced history around advances and cancellation, and an advance depends on approval and a paid plan. If you're curious, read the in-app terms, check how to cancel before you pay for a plan, and keep a note of your repayment date.
