To view old Stories on Snapchat, swipe up from the Camera screen to open Memories and look for the Story Snaps you saved there, or tap the magnifying glass to search. If you never saved them and auto-save was off, My Story Snaps normally delete after 24 hours and can't be brought back.
That's the hard truth behind most searches for this. Snapchat keeps your old Stories only if they were saved, so the real fix is switching on auto-save today.
Below I cover where saved Stories live, how to save the one you've got up now, Flashbacks, and what you can and can't see of a friend's old Story. It's all from Snapchat's Support pages, read in October 2026.
How long a Snapchat Story lasts
Snapchat's help page says Snaps on My Story normally delete after 24 hours. Snapchat+ subscribers can change that with the My Story Timer, choosing 1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 2 days, 3 days or 1 week. Once a Snap expires, it's gone from your Story.
Friends' Stories follow the same clock. Snapchat says you can view a friend's Story an unlimited number of times for 24 hours.
How to view your old Stories in Memories
- Open Snapchat on the Camera screen.
- Swipe up to open Memories.
- Scroll through your saved Snaps, or tap the magnifying glass at the top.
- Tap a suggested category or type a search, then tap a result to view it.
- Swipe down to leave.
Snapchat describes Memories search as a smart tool that helps you find the Snap you're looking for. If you saved whole Stories, they'll be in there with the rest of your saved Snaps.
How to save the Story you've got up now
If your Story's still live, save it before the clock runs out:
- Open My Account by tapping your Bitmoji or Story icon.
- Press and hold on My Story.
- Tap Save Story.
To save just one Snap from it, open My Account, tap My Story to view it, swipe up on the Snap and tap the download icon. Snapchat says you can save your Story to Memories and your device's Camera Roll. My guide to saving a Snapchat Story has more on private and shared ones.
How to make sure future Stories are kept
This is the step that stops the problem happening again. Turn on auto-save, and every Snap you post to My Story goes into Memories automatically.
- In My Account, tap the gear icon to open Settings.
- Scroll to App and Privacy and tap My App.
- Under Customize My App, tap Memories.
- Tap Auto-Save My Story Snaps.
Snapchat adds a warning worth taking seriously: always make sure your Memories are fully backed up before you log out, log in on another device or uninstall Snapchat.
Flashbacks: old Stories Snapchat shows you
Snapchat sometimes brings old Snaps back for you. Its help page says Flashback Memories show up as a Featured Story in Memories if you have a saved Snap from at least one year ago to the day. You can share the Flashback with friends, save it to your Camera Roll, or just watch it.
They don't last. Snapchat says Flashback Memories expire after a set time, and if you open a notification after a Featured Story has expired, you may see a message saying it's already wrapped up.

Can you view a friend's old Story?
Not once it's expired. Snapchat's rule for friends' Stories is unlimited views for 24 hours, then it's gone from your side. There's no archive of other people's Stories for you to browse.
| Story | Can you see it later? |
|---|---|
| Your Story, saved or auto-saved | Yes, in Memories |
| Your Story, not saved | No, once it expires |
| A friend's Story | Only within its 24 hours |
| A Flashback in Memories | Yes, until the Featured Story expires |
Old Stories on My Profile for under-16s
Snapchat has a separate set-up for younger users. Its My Profile page says Snapchatters under 16 can use My Profile to save and showcase Stories and Spotlight videos to friends only. Snaps can be added there from the Post Archive, Memories or the Camera Roll, and only friends can view that content.
Saving Snaps from a Story you share with friends
Shared and Private Stories have their own rule. Snapchat's help page says that if you're part of someone else's Story, you can only save the Snaps that you've added. So if you want to keep the whole group Story, the person who created it can save it.
To save a single Snap from any of your Stories to Memories, open My Account, tap the Story icon to view it, press and hold on the Snap and tap Save Snap. To save a whole Story, open My Account and tap the save icon next to it.
If Memories looks empty
- Check you're logged in to the same account you used for those Stories.
- Give Memories time to load on a slow connection.
- Remember that deleting a Snap from Memories removes it there too. My guide to deleting Snapchat Memories explains why that's permanent.
My verdict
You can only view old Stories on Snapchat if they were saved. Check Memories first, then switch on Auto-Save My Story Snaps so you never have to ask this again. If a Story's already expired and wasn't saved, Snapchat can't give it back, so don't pay for any app that promises to.
