How to Use Gemini on iPhone: Setup, Voice and Live

To use Gemini on iPhone, download the Gemini app from the App Store, open it, sign in with your Google account, then type, tap the microphone or tap Live. The listing says it needs iOS 17.4 or later, and it can't yet set alarms or send texts for you.

Plenty of my clients live on their iPhones, so one of the questions I hear most is whether they need to leave Apple's world to use Google's AI. They don't. Google makes a Gemini app for iPhone, and it takes a couple of minutes to get going. Here's how it works, based on the App Store listing and Google's own help pages.

What the Gemini app for iPhone is

The App Store listing describes Gemini as an AI assistant from Google, published by Google LLC. It lets you chat by typing or speaking, ask questions about photos and documents, and connect to some Google apps. Google's listing also mentions Gemini Live for real-time conversation, including sharing your camera or screen.

What your iPhone needs for the Gemini app

  • The App Store listing says the app requires iOS 17.4 or later (and iPadOS 17.4 or later on iPad).
  • A Google account. Google's help says some features work without signing in, but signing in adds more features and lets you save your Gemini Apps activity.
  • Either a personal account or a work or school account that has access to Gemini Apps. Accounts managed by Family Link can't be used.
  • A supported language and country or territory. Google says the mobile apps are available in more than 150 countries.
  • An age of 13 or over, or the applicable age in your country. The App Store listing gives the app a 13+ rating.

The exact list of what needs an account changes from time to time, so if something's greyed out, signing in is the first thing to check.

How to get started with Gemini on your iPhone

  1. Find the Gemini app in the App Store. Check the developer is Google LLC before you download it.
  2. Open the app and sign in with your Google account when you're asked.
  3. Follow the first-time prompts on screen.
  4. Pick how you want to talk to it: tap the Keyboard icon to type, the Microphone icon to speak, or the Live icon for a real-time conversation.

Google's help says the microphone stays open for up to 5 minutes while you speak a prompt. You can tap Stop to pause, tap the microphone to carry on, and tap Send when you're ready.

Choosing a Gemini model in the iPhone app

Google's help page about Gemini models says you can switch model by tapping the model name at the bottom of the chat box. It lists Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro and Argon, and says you can also pick a thinking level of Low, Medium or High. Which models you see depends on your account, and the page says an eligible Google AI plan is needed for some of them.

If you want to know what to type, my Gemini prompts for business owners give you emails, quotes and plans to copy and adapt.

Using Gemini on iPhone for everyday business jobs

  • Take a photo of a handwritten note or a supplier's list and ask Gemini to turn it into a tidy checklist.
  • Speak a rough idea for a social post while you're out and ask for three versions.
  • Ask for a polite reply to a difficult customer message, then edit it so it sounds like you.
  • Use Live to talk through tomorrow's priorities on the walk to a meeting.
  • Upload a document and ask for the main points before a call.

Pair it with a bit of structure and you'll get much better results. My guide to AI prompt examples with before and after versions shows how a vague request turns into a useful one.

What Gemini on iPhone can't do

This is where expectations and reality part ways. The App Store listing says the app doesn't currently support iOS device actions like setting alarms or sending SMS directly. So don't expect it to replace Siri for phone controls. It's an assistant for thinking, writing, searching and analysing, not a remote control for your iPhone.

Google's help also notes that some AirPods and Apple Watch models may not work with the app, and that some features roll out gradually, so a friend might see something you don't yet.

Privacy settings to look at in the Gemini iPhone app

The App Store listing carries privacy labels, and it says clearly that Apple hasn't verified the information the developer provided. Read them before you sign in with an account that holds client data. Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub is the place to see how your activity is handled, and the app's own settings let you review or switch off saved activity.

  • Don't paste passwords, card numbers or API keys into a chat.
  • Be careful with client documents, and check what your work account allows.
  • Ask permission before you photograph or record another person.

If you'd like to put Gemini and other tools to work across a whole business, not just on your phone, that's a good moment to talk to an AI consultant.
