How to Unmute Someone on Facebook (Stories, Snooze, Unfollow)

To unmute someone on Facebook, open your Stories settings and tap Unmute next to their name if you muted their story. If you snoozed them, end the snooze in Content preferences, and if you unfollowed them, follow them again, because Facebook's help pages have no single unmute button for a person.

People search for how to unmute someone on Facebook because a friend, a Page or a group has gone quiet in their Feed and they can't remember why. The reason is that Facebook doesn't have one button called mute for people. There are three different ways you could have quietened someone, and each has its own way back.

I'll take them in turn, using Facebook's own help pages, so you can work out which one you used and undo it. Nobody gets a notification for any of these, and only you can see the change.

Which Facebook mute did you use: story, snooze or unfollow?

What you didWhat you stopped seeingHow to undo it
Muted a storyTheir story at the top of your FeedUnmute it in your Stories settings
Snoozed themTheir posts in your Feed for 30 daysEnd the snooze in Content preferences
Unfollowed themTheir posts in your FeedFollow them again

If you're not sure, start with the story, because that's the only one Facebook officially calls muting.

Unmuting a Facebook story on the phone app

Facebook says that when you mute a story, it no longer appears at the top of your Feed, and only you can see when you mute or unmute someone's story. To bring it back on Android:

  1. Tap Menu in the top left of Facebook.
  2. Scroll down to Settings and privacy, then tap Settings.
  3. Scroll down to Stories and tap View next to Stories you muted.
  4. Tap Unmute next to the name of the person or Page.

Unmuting someone's Facebook story on a computer

  1. Go to the Stories section at the top of your Feed and click any story.
  2. Click Settings in the top left.
  3. Below Stories you've muted, click Unmute next to the name of the person or Page.

Facebook adds a reassuring note. Muting someone's story is different from unfriending or unfollowing them. You stay friends, and you still see their posts in your Feed, so a muted story is the mildest of the three.

Ending a Facebook snooze to see someone's posts again

Snooze is the one most people forget about. Facebook says snoozing a profile, Page or group means you won't see their posts in your Feed for 30 days, and the profile, Page or group isn't notified. If somebody has vanished from your Feed recently, a snooze is a likely cause, because it can be done in a single tap from a post.

You don't have to wait for it to run out. To turn snooze off on a computer:

  1. Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook.
  2. Click Settings and privacy, then click Content preferences.
  3. Select Snooze.
  4. Next to the profile, Page or group, click End snooze.

On the Android app the route is Menu, then Settings and privacy, then Settings, then Content preferences. Under Who you see, tap Snooze, and tap End snooze next to the name.

Following someone again after you unfollowed them on Facebook

Unfollowing keeps you friends but hides their posts, and Facebook says you can reconnect by following them again. Only you will see the change, and the person, Page or group won't be notified. From a computer:

  1. Click your profile picture, select Settings and privacy, then click Content preferences.
  2. Click Reconnect.
  3. Click Follow next to the name of the person, Page or group you'd like to follow.

You can also do it straight from the source. For a person, go to their profile, click Friends and click Follow. For a Page, go to the Page and click Follow. For a group, click Follow group. On the phone app the Reconnect option sits under Content preferences too, and on a profile you may need to tap Options near the cover photo first.

What happens to Facebook messages when you unmute someone

Everything above is about your Feed, not your chats. Muting a story, snoozing or unfollowing doesn't change how a conversation with that person works. If your real question is about messages, my explainer on whether Facebook has read receipts covers what the other person can see.

Why Facebook mute settings matter for creators and businesses

If you run a Page or a personal brand, remember that your audience can quietly mute, snooze or unfollow you without you ever being told. That's worth knowing when your reach looks lower than expected. It also explains why a mix of posts, reels and stories tends to hold attention better than one format alone. If you're curious about what Facebook keeps on your viewing, my piece on whether Facebook has a watch history is worth a read.

If you still can't see someone after you unmute them on Facebook

  1. Check all three settings, not just one. You might have muted a story and snoozed the same person.
  2. Check you haven't blocked them. Facebook's snooze help links to a separate article on unblocking a profile, Page or nickname.
  3. Close and reopen the Facebook app, or refresh the page on a computer, then look again.
  4. Remember that Facebook decides what appears in your Feed, so someone you follow may still show up less often than you'd like.
  5. Visit their profile or Page directly to read their posts, whatever the Feed is doing.

Frequently asked questions

Can you mute a person on Facebook?

Not as a single setting. Facebook's help pages describe muting stories, snoozing for 30 days and unfollowing. Each one hides someone in a different way, and each has its own way back.

Does the person know if I unmute their story?

No. Facebook says only you can see when you mute or unmute someone's story.

How long does a Facebook snooze last?

Facebook says snoozing hides a profile, Page or group from your Feed for 30 days. You can end it earlier from Content preferences.

Will they be told if I follow them again after unfollowing?

No. Facebook says only you see the change and the person, Page or group isn't notified.

Where do I find the list of people I muted on Facebook?

On the phone app, go to Settings, scroll to Stories and tap View next to Stories you muted. On a computer, open any story and click Settings.
