On Facebook, Suggested for you marks content Facebook thinks you may like from Pages and groups you don't follow. It's personalised using things like your earlier activity, topics you've engaged with and your location. In the app, tap Options on the post to hide it or snooze the Page for 30 days.
You're scrolling your Feed, reading what your friends have posted, and then a post appears from a Page you've never heard of with the words Suggested for you above it. It's natural to wonder why it's there, whether you did something to trigger it, and how to make it stop.
I looked at what Facebook's help centre says about suggested content. The short version is that it's Facebook's guess at what you might like. Here's the longer version, including the controls that work and what to do when you'd rather not see it.
What Suggested for you means on Facebook
The help centre says that, to help you discover new things, Facebook suggests certain content in your Feed. That content is personalised and influenced by things such as your previous Facebook activity.
The suggested content can be videos, photos or articles. The key detail is that it comes from Pages and groups you don't already follow. So if a post is from a Page you follow, it's in your Feed for a different reason. A suggested post is Facebook introducing you to something new.
Why Facebook shows you Suggested for you posts
The help centre says many factors are involved, and some count for more than others. It names three of the important ones:
- Who interacted with it. A post may be suggested if people who also interacted with the same group, Page or content as you interacted with it too.
- Related topics. If you recently engaged with a topic, you may see other content on it. Facebook's example is that liking or commenting on a basketball Page's post could lead to other basketball posts.
- Location. You may see suggestions based on your whereabouts and on how people near you interact with content.
That means something you liked last week can shape what turns up today. If you've been looking up a hobby or a local business, don't be surprised when related Pages appear.
What the Suggested for you label leaves out
Because the label looks official, people read more into it than is there. The help centre describes it as Facebook's own suggestion. It doesn't say a friend of yours recommended the post, and it doesn't describe it as a message from the Page to you personally.
What Facebook does say is that it has Recommendations Guidelines. Through those, it works to avoid recommending content that could be low-quality, objectionable or particularly sensitive, and it avoids recommendations that may be inappropriate for younger users. That's a goal, not a promise that nothing slips through, which is why the report option exists.
How to manage Suggested for you posts in the Facebook app
The help centre says you can control which content is suggested to you in the Facebook app for Android or iOS. The steps are:
- Open the Facebook app and go to the suggested post you want to manage.
- Tap Options.
- Pick the choice that suits you, as listed below.
| Option | What Facebook says it does |
|---|---|
| Hide post | Shows you less content like this |
| Snooze the Page for 30 days | Temporarily stops content from that Page |
| Hide all from the Page | Stops you seeing content from that Page |
| Report post | Lets you report content that concerns you |
My own habit is to try Hide post first. It's the lightest action and it teaches Feed what you don't want without cutting off a Page you may find useful later.
Other ways to change what appears in your Facebook Feed
The help centre has a separate article on controlling your Feed. It lists these tools:
- View and adjust your Feed preferences, which help you control what you see.
- Hide a single story, or choose to see fewer posts from a person, Page or group.
- Unfollow a person or Page. The help centre says you then won't see their posts in your Feed.
- Use Interested or Not interested to see more of what you want and less of what you don't.
- Report something that you think breaks Facebook's Community Standards.
Unfollowing only works for things you follow. A suggested post is from a Page you don't follow, so there's nothing to unfollow. That's why Hide and Snooze are the ones to reach for here.

Suggested for you on Facebook for Page owners
If you run a Page, this is how new people find you. Your post can be shown to people who don't follow you yet, if they're similar to people who already interact with your content or they live nearby. That follows from the factors the help centre lists, though Facebook doesn't give a way to ask to be suggested.
What you can do is post things your audience reacts to and comments on, because interaction is what the help centre says feeds the suggestions. Our guide to adding friends on Facebook covers the people-to-people side, which works differently to Page suggestions.
Suggested for you and your privacy on Facebook
Two of the three factors, activity and location, are things Facebook knows about you. If that bothers you, it's worth reading whether Facebook tracks your location and then reviewing your settings. And if you want to see what you've been interacting with, my explainer on whether Facebook keeps a watch history is a good next stop.
If you can't find the option to hide a Suggested for you post
- Make sure you're using the Facebook app on Android or iOS, because the help centre describes these controls for the app.
- Tap Options on the post itself, not the Feed menu.
- Update the app and restart it.
- Look for the three-dot menu on a post if you don't see the word Options.
The help centre doesn't describe the same menu for a computer, so I can't give you computer steps for this. If you're stuck, report a problem from the help menu.
