How to open up a Locked WhatsApp Chat

The short version: Locked WhatsApp chats open with your phone's fingerprint, Face ID, or the app passcode you set up when you locked them, and you reach them by going to the bottom of your chat list and pulling down, not by searching for them in your normal inbox. If you've forgotten the code entirely, there's no secret backdoor, you'll need your phone's own screen lock credentials to get back in, which is exactly why this feature trips up more people than it helps.

Where locked chats hide

This is the bit that catches almost everyone out. You lock a chat, close WhatsApp, come back later, and it's gone. Not deleted, just invisible. WhatsApp moved locked chats out of the main list entirely and buried them in their own folder.

To find them: open WhatsApp, go to the Chats tab, and scroll all the way to the bottom of your chat list. You'll see a folder labelled "Locked Chats" sitting below your last conversation. On some versions you pull down on the chat list from the very top instead and it reveals the same folder. Tap it, authenticate, and the chat opens.

If you've only got two or three chats and no locked folder appears at all, the chat probably isn't locked in the way you think it is. It might just be archived, which is a different setting altogether and sits under a separate "Archived" heading at the bottom of your chat list.

opening up on iPhone

  • Open WhatsApp and scroll to the bottom of your Chats tab to find the Locked Chats folder
  • Tap it, then authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your phone passcode depending on what you set up
  • Once inside, tap and hold the specific chat you want to open
  • Select "Chat Lock" from the menu and switch it off if you want it to stay visible in your normal list going forward

One thing worth knowing: locked chats on iPhone don't show previews or notification content on your lock screen even if you've turned that on for everything else. That's by design, and it's the same logic behind hiding a sender's name on WhatsApp notifications, both features exist because people share phones more than apps assume.

opening up on Android

  • Open WhatsApp and scroll down past your regular chats
  • Tap the Locked Chats folder
  • Authenticate with your fingerprint, face open up, or PIN, whichever your phone uses as its default screen lock
  • Long press the chat inside the folder, tap the three-dot menu, and choose Chat Lock to toggle it off

Android handles this slightly differently depending on manufacturer. On a Samsung phone using Samsung's own biometric layer alongside Android's, I've seen WhatsApp ask for authentication twice in a row, once for the phone and once for the app, which feels broken but isn't.

A worked example

Say you run a small events company and you use WhatsApp to coordinate with a supplier about a client's wedding, including some pricing details you'd rather your assistant didn't stumble across while borrowing your phone to check the weather. You lock that one chat. Three weeks later the wedding's done, you want to pull up the final invoice conversation to settle a dispute over a late delivery fee, and you open WhatsApp expecting to see it at the top of your recent chats because that's where you last used it.

It's not there. You scroll, you search the contact's name, nothing comes up in the main list. This is the exact moment people assume they've been hacked or the chat's been deleted. It hasn't. It's sitting in that Locked Chats folder at the very bottom of the screen, and a five-second pull-down and a thumbprint gets it back. The panic is almost always worse than the fix.

What if you've forgotten the lock code

Here's the uncomfortable part nobody likes admitting: WhatsApp's chat lock isn't its own separate password system most of the time, it rides on your phone's existing biometric or passcode setup. So if you can open up your phone, you can open up the chat. The trouble comes when someone sets a custom in-app passcode specifically for chat lock, separate from their phone PIN, and then forgets it months later.

In that case, there isn't a recovery flow. No email reset, no support ticket that gets you back in within 24 hours. Your only real options are:

  • Try every variation of a passcode you might reasonably have used, since WhatsApp usually gives unlimited attempts with just a short delay after several wrong tries
  • Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp, which removes the chat lock setting entirely but also means restoring from a backup, so check whether your last backup predates the lock being set
  • Accept you'll need to start that chat lock from scratch once you're back in, because there's no way to recover the old setting without the code

Most guides gloss over this because "just reinstall the app" sounds like a tidy answer, but it isn't free. If your last cloud backup is a week old, you lose a week of messages the moment you reinstall. That's a real cost, not a footnote.

Why this feature exists and who benefits

WhatsApp added chat lock because shared phones, family devices, and the habit of handing your mobile to a kid or a colleague to show a photo are all more common than most privacy features assume. If you're running a business account and juggling client conversations alongside personal ones, it's useful for keeping sensitive threads out of casual view.

But it's not designed for people managing WhatsApp across multiple devices or team members, and that's where the limits show. If you're trying to run a business account across more than one phone, you'll hit restrictions that have nothing to do with chat locking and everything to do with how WhatsApp Business was built. It's worth reading up on what WhatsApp Business restricts when you try to use multiple phones before you assume locking a chat solves a team access problem, because it doesn't.

A few things that catch people out

  • Locking a chat doesn't stop the other person seeing your messages normally on their end, it only affects your own view
  • If you're switching phones soon, know that chat lock settings don't always carry over cleanly, which matters if you're planning to transfer WhatsApp from Android to iPhone and expect everything to look identical afterwards
  • Locked chats are excluded from some search results by default, so if you can't find a message you know you sent, check the locked folder before assuming it vanished
  • Group chats can be locked the same way as individual ones, same folder, same open up method

If you're managing this for a business, not just yourself

Chat lock is a personal privacy tool, not a business access control system. If what you need is to manage scheduled sends, broadcast limits, or a second device for your team, those are separate problems with separate fixes, and conflating them wastes time. For scheduling outbound messages rather than relying on memory, see this breakdown of how to schedule a WhatsApp message on Android and iPhone. And if broadcast volume is the real bottleneck, not privacy, it's worth understanding what the WhatsApp Business broadcast limit is before you waste hours troubleshooting the wrong setting.

If you're stuck choosing between personal WhatsApp habits and a real business setup, that's a bigger conversation than one locked chat, and it's the kind of thing worth getting outside input on rather than guessing.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I find my locked WhatsApp chat anywhere?

It's not deleted, it's moved. Scroll to the very bottom of your Chats tab or pull down from the top of the list to reveal the Locked Chats folder, then authenticate to open it.

Can I open up a WhatsApp chat without Face ID or fingerprint?

Yes, if your phone's screen lock uses a PIN or passcode instead of biometrics, WhatsApp will ask for that same PIN to open the locked chat, since chat lock typically relies on whatever security method your phone already uses.

What happens if I forget my WhatsApp chat lock code?

There's no password reset for this. You'll need to either guess it through repeated attempts or uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp, which removes the lock but may cost you any messages sent since your last backup.

Does locking a chat hide it from the other person too?

No, chat lock only changes what you see on your own device. The other person's phone and chat history are completely unaffected.
