Instagram Help says you can have up to ten Instagram accounts logged in at one time, so you can switch between them without logging out and back in. It doesn't give a cap on how many accounts you can own, and you're only ever using one of them at any moment.
That's the number most people are after. Below is where it comes from, what it doesn't mean, and how to add and switch accounts as of Nov 2026.
Where the ten-account figure comes from
Two separate Instagram Help articles give the same limit. The one on adding and switching between profiles says to bear in mind that you can have up to ten accounts logged in at one time. The one on setting up a professional account says you can have up to 10 Instagram accounts logged in at once. Same figure, two places.
Notice what both lines are about: being logged in. Neither article sets a number for how many accounts you're allowed to create or own, and I won't invent one. If you've seen a smaller figure quoted elsewhere, the current Help articles say ten.
Logged in isn't the same as in use
This is where the question usually gets muddled. Instagram Help says you can only be logged in to a single Instagram account at a time, but your device can store login information for several. So the ten is really about how many accounts your app remembers and lets you hop between, not how many you're running at the same second.
Help gives three reasons an account might show up on your login screen. It was recently logged in to on that device. It's in the same Accounts Centre as another of your accounts and they're allowed to log in to each other. Or, on Android, you're signed in to a Google account that's tied to one of your Facebook or Instagram accounts.
To add or remove saved login info on your phone, go to your profile, tap Menu in the top right and scroll down to Log in. Tap Add account for a new one, or Log out to remove the account you're in. Removing login information only takes the account off that phone. Help says it doesn't deactivate or delete the account. Help also says not everyone can remove a profile from the login screen yet.
The answers in one table
| Question | What Instagram Help says, as of Nov 2026 |
|---|---|
| How many accounts can be logged in at once? | Up to ten, in two separate Help articles |
| Is there a cap on how many accounts you can create? | Help doesn't give one |
| How many can you use at the same moment? | One. Your device can store logins for the others |
| Does removing a login delete the account? | No. It only removes it from that device |
| Does a new profile have to join Accounts Centre? | No. Choosing Create password keeps it out |
| Can you add accounts to an old single login? | No, and an account you remove from it can't go back in |
| Does going professional change a private account? | Yes. It becomes public and pending follow requests are accepted |
Add a second account on your phone
Instagram Help says you can create additional profiles for the same Instagram account. In the app:
- Open the Instagram app and tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
- Tap your profile name at the top right.
- Tap Add Instagram account.
- Tap Create new account.
- Enter your new profile name, then tap Next.
- Tap Continue, then tap Allow and continue to add the new profile to your Accounts Centre.
There's a choice hidden in that last step. If you don't want the new profile in your Accounts Centre, tap Create password instead, set a password and tap Next, add a phone number or email address, tap Next and then Complete sign-up. For a client account or one a freelancer will manage, keeping it out of Accounts Centre is often the cleaner option.
Already got the second account? Use Add account under Log in, as above, and sign in with its details.
Add and switch accounts on a computer
On instagram.com, Help gives a short route for adding an account you already have:
- In the bottom left, click More, then click Switch accounts.
- Enter the username and password of the account you want to add.
- Click Log in.
- To switch later, click More, then Switch accounts, and click the account you want.
I've written a fuller guide to switching between Instagram accounts without logging out if you're moving between several every day.
Older single logins and email addresses
Some people set up a single login for several Instagram accounts years ago. Instagram Help says you can keep using it through Accounts Centre, but you can't add new accounts to it, and if you remove an account you can't add it back. Each account on that single login also keeps its own password, which still works on its own.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
The email side of this question is a separate one, and I've answered it in how many Instagram accounts you can have with one email.
Business, creator or personal: decide per account
Each account can be a different type. Instagram Help says business accounts suit retailers, local businesses, brands, organisations and service providers, while creator accounts suit public figures, content producers, artists and influencers. You can switch back to personal, or change professional type, at any time.
Two catches come with switching. If a personal account is private, going professional makes it public, and all pending follow requests are accepted automatically. And if you switch a professional account back to personal, Help says you'll lose access to ads and may lose some tools, and any Facebook Page connected to it gets disconnected. Once an account is professional, you can turn on the professional dashboard to see its insights.
What I'd do with more than one account
I'd keep the number of logged-in accounts on any one phone to the ones that person posts to every week. Ten is the ceiling, not a target, and every saved login is one more account someone can post to by mistake.
I'd create new brand or client profiles with their own password when you don't want them sharing your Accounts Centre, and I'd skip switching a private personal account to professional unless you're happy for it to go public, because Help says that's what happens.
If you run more than one brand account and want a tidy setup the whole team can follow, that's the sort of social media guidance I give. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
Frequently asked questions
How many Instagram accounts can you have?
Instagram Help says you can have up to ten accounts logged in at one time. It doesn't give a cap on how many accounts you can create.
Can I use two Instagram accounts at the same time?
No. Help says you can only be logged in to a single account at a time, but your device can store login info for several and you can switch between them.
Does removing an account from my phone delete it?
No. Help says removing login information only removes the account from that device and won't deactivate or delete it.
Can I keep a new Instagram profile out of Accounts Centre?
Yes. When you create it, tap Create password instead of Allow and continue, then finish sign-up with a phone number or email.
Will switching to a professional account make my account public?
Yes, if it's private. Help says a private personal account becomes public when it goes professional, and pending follow requests are accepted.
