You can't make a business or creator account private on Instagram while it stays professional. Switch it to a personal account first (Settings and activity, then Account type and tools, then Switch account type), and then turn on Private account under Account privacy. It takes about a minute, but you lose your Insights and business tools along the way.
The reason is simple: professional accounts exist to be found. Contact buttons, ads and Insights all assume strangers can see your profile, so Instagram doesn't allow the private switch on them. Once the account is personal again, the privacy toggle appears like it does for anyone else.
Steps: from business account to private account
These steps are the same for a business account and a creator account. Do them in the app on your phone.
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Tap the menu (three lines) in the top corner, which opens Settings and activity.
- Scroll to Account type and tools and tap it.
- Tap Switch account type.
- Tap Switch to personal account, then confirm.
- Go back to Settings and activity and tap Account privacy.
- Turn on Private account and confirm.
If a menu name looks different in your version, search the settings for 'Account type' or 'Account privacy' and you'll land in the right place.
What you lose and what you keep
The catch: switching to personal removes Insights for that account, and when you switch back to professional later, the old Insights don't come back. If you've got months of reach and audience data you care about, screenshot or note the key numbers before you switch.
| You lose | You keep |
|---|---|
| Insights (reach, audience, post performance) | All your posts, Reels, Stories highlights and captions |
| The Professional dashboard | Your existing followers |
| Contact buttons such as email and call | Your username, name, bio and profile photo |
| Running ads and boosting posts from the account | Your DMs and chat history |
| Category label on your profile | Your saved posts and collections |
Your current followers stay. What changes is everyone else: once you're private, new people have to send a follow request and wait for you to approve it. Non-followers will see your name, photo and bio, but not your posts.
Before you switch: a short checklist
Five minutes of prep saves you a lot of regret, because the Insights part can't be undone.
- Screenshot your Professional dashboard and the Insights for your best posts, so you've got a record of reach and audience.
- Write down anything in your contact buttons (email, phone, address) so you can add it back later if you return to professional.
- Stop or finish any ads or boosted posts that are running from the account.
- Tell anyone who manages the account with you, so nobody's surprised when the tools vanish.
- Think about your link in bio and any shop links: they still work, but strangers won't be able to see your posts once you're private.
What your followers notice
Very little. Instagram doesn't send your followers a message saying you've changed account type or gone private. They'll keep seeing your posts and stories as before. The people who notice are non-followers: anyone who lands on your profile from a search or a tag sees a lock and a Follow button, and has to wait for you to accept them. If you get a lot of follow requests after switching, you can approve or ignore them from the notifications screen.
Who shouldn't do this
Going private suits some people. For others it quietly cuts off the reason the account exists. I'd think twice if any of these sound like you:
- You sell to people who don't know you yet. A private shop can't be browsed. Most customers won't send a request and wait; they'll find someone else.
- You rely on hashtags, the Explore page or Reels reach. Private posts don't show to non-followers, so discovery stops.
- You run ads or boost posts. That needs a professional account, so you'd be switching your marketing off.
- You report results to anyone. If a client, manager or partner expects Insights, losing them for good is a real problem.
- You get bookings or enquiries from the contact buttons. They disappear with the switch.
If the real worry is one person or a handful of people seeing your stories, you don't need to go private at all. Close friends lets you share a story with a short list only, and Hide story from blocks chosen people from seeing your stories without unfollowing or blocking them. Both live in the story settings. If it's DMs that feel too visible, you might prefer to turn off read receipts on Instagram instead.
Changing your mind: switching back
Nothing is locked in. If you go private and decide you miss the business tools, you can switch back.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Open Settings and activity, then Account privacy, and turn off Private account. Professional accounts can't be private, so this comes first.
- Go to Account type and tools and tap Switch to professional account.
- Choose Business or Creator, pick a category and follow the prompts.
- Add your contact options again if you want them showing.
Your Insights start again from the day you switch back. The old figures stay gone, which is why it's worth a screenshot before you leave professional mode.
If what you want is a full break rather than privacy, a pause might suit you better. You can deactivate your Instagram account for a while, which hides it completely, and later reactivate it just by logging in.
Private personal vs public business: side by side
| Private personal account | Public business account | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sees your posts | Approved followers only | Anyone |
| New followers | Send a request you approve | Follow straight away |
| Insights | No | Yes |
| Contact buttons and ads | No | Yes |
| Shows in hashtags and Explore | No | Yes |
My verdict
A business that wants customers shouldn't go private. If you're after privacy for your family life, I'd keep the business account public and set up a separate personal account for friends, then make that one private. You get both, and you don't throw away your Insights.

Professional accounts (business and creator) can't be set to private. Switch to a personal account first, then turn on Private account under Account privacy.
Will I lose followers if I switch my business account to personal?
No. Your existing followers stay. New people will need to send a follow request once you make the account private.
Do I get my Insights back if I switch back to a business account?
No. Switching to personal removes Insights, and the old data doesn't return when you go professional again. Insights start fresh from the day you switch back.

Can I hide my stories without making my account private?
Yes. Use Close friends to share a story with a short list, or Hide story from to stop chosen people seeing your stories. Both work on public and professional accounts.
