How to Reply to a Comment on Instagram (Text, Reel or Bulk)

To reply to an Instagram comment, go to the post, tap Reply below the comment, type your response and tap Post. Instagram adds the person's @username so they get a notification to view your reply. On a computer it's the same: click Reply below the comment, add your text and click Post.

That's the basic reply, and it takes seconds. But Instagram gives you two more ways to answer comments that are far more useful for a business: replying with a brand new reel, and handling lots of comments at once. Here's how each works, straight from Instagram's Help Centre, plus the limits that stop a reply from posting.

The three ways to answer a comment

MethodBest forWhere
Text replyQuick answers, thanks, questionsApp, computer and mobile browser
Reply with a reelQuestions worth a fuller answer, and fresh contentInstagram app for Android, iPhone and iPad, on public reels
Bulk manageHiding, deleting or blocking lots of commentsInstagram app, on your own posts

How to reply to a comment in the app

  1. Open the post or reel and tap the comment icon to see the comments.
  2. Tap Reply below the comment you want to answer.
  3. Instagram starts your reply with the commenter's @username. Type your message after it.
  4. Tap Post.

Instagram says the reply works by mentioning the person, and they'll receive a notification to view the comment. Your reply sits in a thread under their comment, so everyone reading can follow the conversation.

How to reply on a computer

  1. Go to the post on instagram.com.
  2. Click Reply below any comment and add your comment.
  3. Click Post.

If you just want to acknowledge a comment, you can like it instead: tap the heart to the right of it, or double tap the comment. Instagram says you can see who's liked a comment by tapping the number of likes below it.

How to reply to a comment with a reel

This is my favourite feature for business accounts, because one good question in your comments becomes your next piece of content. Instagram says anyone can reply to comments on public reels with a new reel, and the reply reel shows a sticker with the comment, the commenter's username and their profile picture.

  1. Tap Reply below the comment you want to answer, then tap the camera icon on the left.
  2. Record your reel, or choose a video from your gallery or camera roll. You can also tap Green screen to record with a different background.
  3. Tap the comment sticker to change its background colour, or tap and hold it to move it.
  4. Tap Next and edit your reel.
  5. Tap Next again, then Share.

The person who left the comment gets a notification that you've replied to them, and viewers can tap their username on your reel to see the comments on the original.

The catch with reel replies

Your reply reel depends on the comment staying up. Instagram says that if the comment you replied to is deleted, the reel you posted as a reply is deleted too. If the original reel is deleted, every reply reel made from its comments goes as well. And if the original creator switches to a private account, no new reply reels can be made on that reel. So reply with a reel to comments on your own content, or from people you trust, rather than on a stranger's reel.

How to manage lots of comments at once

When a post takes off, replying one by one isn't the only job. You'll want to clear spam too. Instagram lets you do this in bulk on your own posts:

  1. Tap Comments below your post.
  2. Tap Options in the top right, then Select multiple comments.
  3. Select the comments you want to manage.
  4. At the bottom, choose Hide comments, Delete comments or Block accounts.

Instagram says you can delete up to 25 comments at a time. To restrict an account instead, tap and hold one of its comments and tap Restrict. You can also tap Comment controls to turn off comments or manage comment filters. For single comments, see my guides on hiding a comment on Instagram and pinning a comment so the best answer sits at the top.

Why your reply won't post

If Instagram shows an error when you try to reply, its Help Centre lists these causes:

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Your app is out of date. Update it first.
  • You've included more than five @ mentions in one comment.
  • You've included more than 30 hashtags in one comment.
  • You're posting the same comment more than once, and that includes the same emoji.
  • Your comment contains words or phrases Instagram filters to help people follow its Community Standards.

The duplicate rule catches a lot of busy accounts. If you reply "Thank you!" to twenty people in a row, Instagram may block the repeats. Vary your replies and use the person's name or a detail from what they said.

One more thing that confuses people: Instagram says if someone with a private profile mentions a person who isn't one of their approved followers, that person won't get a notification. So if a private account tags you in a reply and you never hear about it, that's why.

Replying well: what I'd do

  • Reply within the first hour or two of posting where you can, while people are still reading.
  • Answer the question in the reply itself. Don't just say "DM me".
  • Ask a light follow up question, so the thread keeps going.
  • Turn the best question of the week into a reel reply, on your own post.
  • Use bulk tools to clear spam before you start replying, so real comments aren't buried.

My verdict

Replying to an Instagram comment is two taps, but the accounts that win treat comments as a conversation, not a chore. Use text replies for speed, reel replies for questions that deserve a fuller answer on camera, and the bulk tools to keep the thread clean. If you want to bring someone else into the conversation, tag them in a comment the same way.

Frequently asked questions

How do you reply to a specific comment on Instagram?

Go to the post, tap Reply below that comment, type your reply after the @username Instagram adds, and tap Post. The person gets a notification to view it.

Can you reply to an Instagram comment with a video?

Yes. On public reels, tap Reply below the comment, then the camera icon, and record or upload a reel. It shows the comment as a sticker on your video.

What happens to my reel reply if the comment is deleted?

Instagram says if the comment you replied to is deleted, the reel you posted as a reply is deleted too.

Why can't I reply to a comment on Instagram?

Instagram lists an outdated app, more than five @ mentions, more than 30 hashtags, posting the same comment more than once, or filtered words as reasons a comment won't post.

How many Instagram comments can I delete at once?

Instagram says you can delete up to 25 comments at a time using Select multiple comments on your own post.
