To remove Powered by Shopify, go to Online Store in your Shopify admin, open your theme's three-dot menu and choose Edit default theme content. Search for powered, type a single space in the Powered by Shopify box and click Save. If the message still shows, Shopify says you may need to delete one tag from your theme's footer code.
That little Powered by Shopify line in your footer isn't a big deal, but removing it makes your store look more polished and more like your own brand. Shopify provides an official way to do it, no developer needed, and a code fallback for themes where the simple method doesn't work. Here's both, plus the related spots where Shopify branding can appear.
The simple method: edit default theme content
- In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store.
- Find the theme you want to edit, click the three-dot menu and choose Edit default theme content.
- In the Filter items box, type powered.
- In the Powered by Shopify box, type a single space.
- Click Save.
That single space is the whole trick. Leaving the box empty would bring back the default text, so Shopify's instruction is to enter one space, which replaces the message with nothing visible.
Do it from your phone
- In the Shopify app, tap the menu, then Online Store under Sales channels.
- Tap Manage all themes.
- Open the theme's three-dot menu and tap Edit default theme content.
- Filter for powered, type a single space in the Powered by Shopify box and tap Save.
Store not launched yet? Fix the Opening soon page too
If your store is in private mode, visitors see an Opening soon page, which has its own Powered by Shopify message. Shopify says you can repeat the same step for the Powered by Shopify HTML box, which is what appears on that page. It's worth doing before you start promoting your launch.
Still showing? Edit the footer code
Some themes ignore the theme content setting. Shopify's fallback is a small code edit:
- Go to Online Store, open the theme's three-dot menu and choose Edit code.
- In the Sections folder, open the file called footer.liquid.
- Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac) and search for the powered by link tag, which looks like powered_by_link inside double curly brackets.
- Delete that tag.
- Click Save.
Before you edit code, duplicate your theme from the theme menu so you have a safe backup copy. If anything goes wrong, you can switch back in seconds.
Which method should you use?
| Situation | Method |
|---|---|
| Most themes | Edit default theme content, enter a single space |
| Store in private mode | Also edit the Powered by Shopify HTML box |
| Message still in the footer | Delete the tag in footer.liquid |
| Not comfortable with code | Ask Shopify Support if you use a free Shopify theme |
Help from Shopify
Here's a detail that saves people hiring a developer for a five-minute job. Shopify says that if you use a free theme from Shopify, its support team might be able to help with this specific change, within the scope of its design policy. If you're nervous about touching code, ask them first; it only takes a quick message to find out.
Is it allowed to remove it?
Yes. Shopify publishes the instructions itself, so removing the message is a normal customisation. Shopify describes it as a way to create a cleaner footer and a more customised brand experience, which is exactly why most established stores do it.
Check it on every page
After saving, open your store in a private browser window and scroll to the footer on the home page, a product page and the cart. Some themes have more than one footer section or a separate footer on certain templates. If the message still appears on one page type, that template may use a different section, so check the code editor's Sections folder for other footer files before giving up.
What about emails?
The theme setting only changes your storefront. Order confirmations and other customer emails are controlled separately in your notification settings, where you can customise the email template and its branding. While you're polishing the storefront, it's worth checking those emails carry your logo and colours too, so the experience feels consistent from first click to delivery.

Other places your store can look unbranded
- Favicon: the little icon in the browser tab. Upload your own in theme settings.
- Footer text: replace placeholder copy with your own business details.
- Email notifications: check order and shipping emails carry your logo and wording.
- Store name: make sure it matches your brand everywhere customers see it.
Small details like these add up to a store that feels trustworthy, which matters for conversions. My guide to what counts as a good conversion rate for Shopify stores explains why, and my e-commerce website checklist covers the rest of the polish.
My verdict
Online Store, the theme's three dots, Edit default theme content, search for powered and type a single space, then save. Do the HTML box too if your store's in private mode. If it still shows, back up your theme and delete the tag in footer.liquid, or ask Shopify Support if you're on a free Shopify theme.
