How to Remove Background in Canva (Photos and Video)

To remove a background in Canva, select your photo, choose BG Remover from the editor toolbar and wait for it to process. Canva's help says the tool is part of Canva Pro and other upgraded versions, and it isn't available for vector images, so check those two things first if the button won't work.

A product shot with a messy kitchen behind it, a headshot taken against a bookshelf, a logo pasted on a white box: a cluttered background drags the eye away from the thing you want people to see. Canva has a one-click tool for it, and for small business owners and creators it's one of the quickest ways to make a photo look finished.

Here's how Canva's own help centre says to use it, what the tool won't do, and how to fix an edge that comes out rough.

Using BG Remover on a photo in the Canva editor

The tool sits on the editor toolbar once you've selected a photo. Canva's help article gives this route:

  1. Open your design and click the photo you want to cut out.
  2. Choose BG Remover from the toolbar above the editor.
  3. Wait for Canva to finish processing. The background disappears and the subject stays.

That's the whole job for most photos. Canva's help says background remover is included with Canva Pro and the other upgraded versions, so if you can't see a working BG Remover button on a free account, that's the usual reason.

Removing a photo background from your Canva Projects tab

You don't have to open a design first. Canva's help gives a second route that starts from your saved images, which is handy if you want a clean cut-out ready to drop into several designs:

  1. Go to Projects, then Images.
  2. Hover over the photo and select the More icon.
  3. Choose Edit image.
  4. Under Tools, select BG Remover.

Canva's help adds that for a whole folder you can run the tool in bulk, but only on folders with 50 or fewer images, and one folder at a time. Only photos you've uploaded are processed, so Canva library photos are skipped.

Fixing a rough edge with the Erase and Restore brushes in Canva

Automatic cut-outs struggle with wispy hair, glass and anything the same colour as its backdrop. Canva gives you brushes to tidy up, and I'd always check the edges at full size before you export. Per Canva's help:

  1. Select the photo and reselect BG Remover.
  2. Choose Erase to take away more of the picture, or Restore to bring back a piece the tool removed.
  3. Use the Brush size slider to match the area you're fixing.
  4. Drag the brush over the spot. Select Show original image whenever you want to compare.

Small brush, short strokes and a bit of patience usually beat one big sweep.

What Canva's background remover can't handle

Canva's help lists a few limits worth knowing before you start a batch:

  • Photos need to be under 9MB, and a photo over 10MP is downscaled to 10MP after the background comes off.
  • Background Remover isn't available for vector images.
  • Canva's help says the same tool works on video: select the video and choose BG Remover from the toolbar. Videos need to be less than 10 minutes long.

If your logo or illustration is a vector, you'll need to start from a version that's a normal image, or build it without a background in the first place.

Saving a cut-out from Canva with no background

Removing the background in the editor isn't the same as exporting a see-through file. If you want the cut-out to land on a coloured page or a website banner without a white box around it, you need to download it as a PNG with the transparent background switch on. Canva's help says that switch is available on Canva Pro, Teams, Business, Education and Nonprofits, and that only PNG keeps transparency.

Canva background remover tips for small business graphics

The reason most business owners reach for this tool is consistency. A shop with ten product photos taken in different rooms looks scattered; the same ten photos on one clean colour look like a range. A few habits help:

  • Start with a photo where the subject is well lit and clearly separate from what's behind it. The tool does its best work on a clear edge.
  • Put the cut-out on a brand colour or a simple scene and zoom in to check the outline before you export.
  • Save the finished cut-out so you can reuse it, rather than redoing it for every post.
  • Keep an eye on who owns the photo. Only cut out images you own or have the right to edit.

If you're planning a feed of branded posts, my notes on writing and scheduling an Instagram post for your business pair well with a set of matching cut-outs.

If BG Remover won't work on your Canva photo

  • The button's missing or locked: you're likely on the free version. Canva's help says the tool is part of the upgraded versions.
  • The photo won't process: check it's under 9MB and that it's an uploaded photo rather than a Canva library image or a vector.
  • The edge looks chewed: use Erase and Restore, then compare with Show original image.
  • A video won't process: check it's less than 10 minutes long. Canva's help says to download and re-upload a video you've trimmed in Canva first.

If none of that fixes it, Canva's help centre is the place to ask, since its team can see your account and the file.
