Wilted Rose Emoji Meaning: Heartbreak, Irony and Why Teens Swapped 💔 for 🥀

The wilted rose emoji 🥀 means sadness, heartbreak, grief or disappointment, and its official Unicode name is Wilted Flower, not wilted rose. The catch is that since early 2025 it's mostly used ironically: Emojipedia says ironic use spiked on TikTok, where teens adopted it in place of the broken heart 💔 for mock tragedy about small things.

So a 🥀 from your teenager after losing a video game isn't a cry for help. It's a joke. But the same flower on a post about a real loss still means grief. Here's how to tell the two apart, where the trend came from and how I'd handle it if you run a brand account.

Dead rose, wilted rose, Wilted Flower: one emoji, three names

People search for it as the wilted rose or the dead rose, but the Unicode Consortium's emoji list calls it 'wilted flower'. Emojipedia says Wilted Flower was approved as part of Unicode 9.0 in 2016 and added to Emoji 3.0 the same year. Know Your Meme notes it's widely nicknamed the 'dead rose emoji'.

On most phones it looks like a faded red rose drooping to the right from a dried-out stem and shedding a petal. That's why everyone calls it a rose, even though the official name never says so.

Heartbreak and real sadness

The sincere meaning is still there. Emojipedia lists sadness, heartbreak, grief and disappointment. Know Your Meme says it's long been used to represent being damaged or heartbroken, shared earnestly by emo users online. After a breakup, a lost pet or a hard week, 🥀 can mean exactly what it looks like: something lovely has faded.

If someone close to you sends it with no joke around it, take it seriously and ask how they are. A short 'want to talk?' goes a long way, and you can always laugh later if it turns out to be the ironic kind.

The 2025 TikTok switch from 💔 to 🥀

The ironic meaning has an unusually clear starting point. Know Your Meme traces it to a trend in late February 2025, when TikTok users decided the broken heart emoji had become overused in memes. On February 21, 2025, one TikTok caption said 💔 was 'lowkey starting to become too mainstream' and suggested switching to 🥀. A wave of videos followed, and the wilted flower became the new way to be dramatically sad about nothing.

BuzzFeed describes the result well: the emoji can suggest mock-earnestness about unserious topics, or a sincere attempt to show loss or sadness. Know Your Meme also records a March 2025 copypasta with a 🥀 between every single word, which tells you how far the joke went. A youth trends report citing The Guardian says a linguist called it a 'forced emoji', meaning young people deliberately gave it a new meaning to replace one they'd seen their parents use.

Gen Alpha, Gen Z and the 'I feel old' gap

This is where the data gets fun. BuzzFeed reported in 2026 that Google data shared with The New York Times, drawn from anonymous records of more than 665 million emojis typed on Google's keyboard, put the wilting rose at number 93 in the most common choices and made it the fastest-rising emoji on the list. The same youth trends report says that in 2025 it was the fastest-growing most used emoji among tweens and teens, who use it the way older people use a broken heart.

BuzzFeed also found it almost absent in Reddit forums for millennials and Gen X, used in about 2% of replies in a Gen Z forum and nearly 8% in a younger group's forum, almost four times as much. No wonder so many people in their twenties say it makes them feel old. BuzzFeed adds that Merriam-Webster suggests the low battery 🪫 is already nipping at its heels.

Same emoji, different flower on WhatsApp and X

Not everyone sees a rose. Emojipedia notes that WhatsApp shows a yellow, bell-shaped flower drooping to the left, perhaps a sunflower, while X shows a pink drooping blossom that may be a tulip. Some designs have changed over the years too, and one platform's version once showed a healthy red flower. So if a friend on a different app says 'why did you send me a yellow flower?', that's why. Emojipedia also notes the emoji is sometimes used with positive feelings, to represent rose petals or another flower, which adds one more layer of confusion for anyone outside the joke.

Sincere 🥀 or ironic 🥀? Clues to check

ClueProbably ironicProbably sincere
TopicA lost game, a burnt toast, a bad hair dayA death, a breakup, an illness
SenderA teen or someone very onlineA close friend going through it
Other emojis💔 and 🥀 stacked, 😭, 🤡A single 🥀, or 🖤
WordsSlang, all lowercase, a joke setupPlain sentences about feelings
PlatformTikTok commentsA private message or memorial post

These are made-up messages to show how it's used, not real chats:

  • 'They ran out of my favourite crisps 🥀' Mock tragedy.
  • 'pov: it's Monday again 🥀🥀' Ironic, in TikTok style.
  • 'Still can't believe she's gone 🥀' Sincere grief.
  • 'Lost my streak 🥀 got it back 🌹' The 2025 mood swing.

If 'pov' in that example threw you, here's what POV means in a caption, and if the teen in your life says 'ts' next to a 🥀, here's what TS means.

Brands, grief and the dead rose: my take

My advice for brands is to use 🥀 only if you're fluent in the joke. A playful account aimed at teens can post 'sold out again 🥀' and get laughs, because the audience reads it as mock drama. If your audience is older, they may read it as real sadness and worry something's wrong.

Never use the ironic version near real loss, illness or bad news, and don't use it to react to a customer's complaint. It'll look like you're mocking them. If you'd like a custom flower that fits your brand instead, here's where to make AI emojis for free.
