To record on Snapchat without holding the button, use the Video Timer. Tap the Timer icon in the Camera toolbar twice, choose your clip length, pick a 3-second or 10-second countdown and tap Start Countdown. Snapchat counts down, then records for the length you chose, so your hands are free the whole time.
Holding the record button is fine for a quick clip, but it's hopeless when you want to prop your phone up and get in the shot, or film something that needs both hands. Snapchat's answer is the Video Timer. It's tucked into the same Timer icon as the photo countdown, which is why so many people miss it.
How to use the Video Timer, step by step
- Open the Snapchat camera.
- Tap the Timer icon in the Camera toolbar twice to open the Video Timer.
- Choose how long you want the clip to be.
- Pick a 3-second or 10-second countdown.
- Tap Start Countdown, set your phone down and step into place.
The Video Timer helps you pick a clip length and gives you a countdown before recording starts, so you don't touch the phone once you've tapped Start.
Recording with a Sound? It's one tap, not two
Here's a small detail from Snapchat's help page that's easy to miss. If you've added a Sound before recording, tapping the Timer icon once opens the Video Timer straight away. You can also drag to adjust the playback, so the clip lines up with the part of the track you want.
| What you're recording | How to open the Video Timer | Extra control |
|---|---|---|
| A normal video | Tap the Timer icon twice | Clip length and countdown |
| A video with a Sound | Tap the Timer icon once | Clip length, countdown, and drag to adjust playback |
Hold to record vs Video Timer
| Hold the button | Video Timer | |
|---|---|---|
| How it starts | Press and hold the camera button | A 3 or 10 second countdown |
| Hands needed | One finger on the button | None after you tap Start Countdown |
| Clip length | As long as you hold | The length you pick first |
| Best for | Quick reactions and moments | Selfie videos, tutorials, group shots |
Snapchat's own steps for a normal video Snap are to press and hold the camera button, and the timer is the hands-free route the help pages describe.
Make a hands-free clip look better
- Turn on Video Stability if you're on an iPhone: on the Camera screen, tap the downward arrow on the right to expand the Camera tools and select Video Stability. Snapchat says it reduces shakiness.
- Add captions afterwards: from the preview, tap the Timeline Editor icon in the lower left, tap Caption, style it, tap Done, then drag the caption layer to set when it appears.
- Add narration with Voiceover: in Timeline Editor, tap Sounds, choose Voiceover and tap record to start and stop. Snapchat notes availability varies by device and account.
- Make it loop or bounce: tap the repeat icon to play once or on loop, or use Bounce on any part of the clip. My guide to doing a boomerang on Snapchat goes through it.
Editing a timer recording in Timeline Editor
Once you've filmed, Timeline Editor lets you trim and tidy the clip. Take the video, then on the preview tap the video thumbnail labelled Edit. Tap a clip to Split, Duplicate, Replace, change Speed or Volume, Crop and Rotate, or Delete, and drag a clip's ends to trim. You can add music from Sounds, but only one licensed song plays at a time, and if your video's longer than the song, the song may loop to match. More on that in editing Snapchat videos.
If your hands-free video has no sound
Snapchat's checklist for silent video Snaps is quick to run through:
- Check your phone isn't in silent mode.
- Make sure the volume isn't muted.
- Check Snapchat has access to your microphone in your phone's settings.
- Try recording with your phone's own camera or voice app. If the sound fails there too, it's a phone problem rather than Snapchat.
My verdict
If you want to record on Snapchat without holding the button, the Video Timer is the way, and it's two taps away on the Timer icon. Pick the 10-second countdown when you need to walk into frame and the 3-second one when you're already in place. Turn on Video Stability first if you're filming handheld on an iPhone, and add captions afterwards in Timeline Editor so the clip works with the sound off.
