Snapchat Discover Page: Why You See What You See and How to Change It

The Snapchat Discover page is the feed of Stories, Shows and creator content that Snapchat picks for you, and you can't switch it off. Snapchat says you can't fully disable the Discover section or a whole topic. You can hide individual Stories and Shows, reset your suggested content, and in the UK, the EU and Switzerland turn off personalised recommendations.

A lot of people land on Discover by accident, or open it once and then can't work out why it's full of the same kind of video. Snapchat has published a plain account of how it ranks this feed, and it explains a lot. Below is what the page is, how it decides what to show you, and every setting that changes it.

What the Discover page is

Discover is Snapchat's public content feed. It sits alongside Spotlight, and Snapchat runs both through the same personalisation system. The aim, in Snapchat's words, is to show you content that's relevant to you, plus breaking news and other things it thinks you'll enjoy.

How Snapchat ranks the Discover page

Snapchat's ranking page sets out the steps it follows:

  1. Moderation. Content is checked against the Community Guidelines by automatic moderation and by trained human reviewers before it's surfaced.
  2. Labelling. People and computers tag each piece of content by topic, and by keywords used in it.
  3. Reading your reactions. Subscribing, sharing and favouriting count as signs you like something. Skipping, reporting and hiding count as signs you don't. How long you watch, and whether you finish, count too.
  4. Age and language. Snapchat looks at your country, your language, the age on your account and the age it thinks you may be from your friends and activity.
  5. Scoring and ranking. It predicts what you're likely to do with each item, scores it, and ranks the feed with limits so you see a mix.

The insight most people miss: for Discover, Snapchat says the signals with the highest weight are your viewing history, what you've watched recently, how long you watched, and whether you favourited, shared, hid or reported something. Country, language, age and gender count, but less. So the fastest way to change your feed is how you watch, not where you live.

Snapchat also mixes things up on purpose. If you watch a lot of basketball, it says it may slip in other sport or news so you don't end up in an echo chamber.

How to hide a Story or Show on Discover

Press and hold on the tile and tap Hide this Content. Snapchat notes that not all Stories content can be hidden, and you can't completely disable a topic, theme or the Discover section itself.

How to bring back something you hid

  1. Tap the three dots at the top of the Stories screen.
  2. Select View Hidden Stories.
  3. Tap Un-Hide on the Story you want to see again.

You can also search for the Story at the top of Stories, press and hold on it and tap Subscribe.

Settings that change the whole feed

SettingWhat it doesWho gets it
Hide this ContentRemoves one Story or Show and counts as a dislike signalEveryone
Reset Suggested ContentRefreshes your public content feeds; most personalisation signals reset, but not allShown in Settings
Personalization ControlsTurns off personalised recommendations so content is chosen using basics like language, age and countryPeople in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland

To turn personalisation off, tap the three dots on a piece of content and choose Why am I seeing this content?, which takes you to Settings, or go to Personalization Controls in Settings directly. Snapchat warns the feed then gets more random and less relevant, and there may be a delay before you notice the change. You can switch it back on by tapping the heart icon in Discover or Spotlight and choosing Enable.

Even after a reset, Snapchat says you may still see creators you follow, blocked or disliked, and content tailored to your demographic.

Subtitles on Discover

If you watch with the sound off, some Discover content has subtitles. Tap the three-dot menu at the top, tap Subtitles, pick a language and tap Done. If none appear, that piece doesn't have them.

For creators and small businesses

The same ranking rules tell you what Snapchat rewards: content people watch to the end, share, favourite and subscribe from. If you're posting publicly, set up a public profile on Snapchat first, and keep an eye on what holds attention through Snapchat Insights.

My verdict

You can't get rid of Discover, so train it. Hide what you don't want, watch what you do, and let Snapchat's own top signals do the work. If it's gone badly off track, Reset Suggested Content is the quickest fix, and if you're in the UK or EU and simply don't want a personalised feed, turn personalisation off and accept a more random mix.
