How to Record a WhatsApp Call (and What to Do Instead)

WhatsApp's help centre doesn't describe any way to record a call inside the app, and calls are end-to-end encrypted, so WhatsApp holds no recording. Keep a record by taking notes and sending a written summary in the chat. Check the rules where you live before recording anyone.

It's a fair thing to want. A client call where you agree scope and deadlines, an interview for your podcast, a supplier promising a delivery date. You finish the call and think, I wish I had that on tape. So you search for a record button in WhatsApp, and you can't find one.

There's a reason for that, and I'd rather tell you straight than send you to a dodgy app. Below is what WhatsApp's help centre does and doesn't say about calls, what you can do instead to keep a reliable record, and one important point about recording other people.

Does WhatsApp have a built-in call recorder?

I searched WhatsApp's help centre for recording a call. It returned articles on making voice calls, making video calls, group calls, call waiting, call links, transferring a call to another device and call history. None of them describes a record button or in-app call recording.

So, going by WhatsApp's own help pages, there's no documented way to record a call inside the app. I can't promise that will never change, which is why it's worth looking at the help centre again if WhatsApp adds something new. But I won't give you steps for a feature its help pages don't describe.

Why recording a WhatsApp call isn't straightforward

WhatsApp's help centre explains that calls are end-to-end encrypted. In its words, your messages, photos, videos, voice messages, documents, live location, status updates and calls are secured, and no one outside the chat, not even WhatsApp, can read, listen to or share them.

WhatsApp adds that it has no ability to see the content of messages or listen to calls that are end-to-end encrypted. That's good news for your privacy, and it also tells you why WhatsApp itself can't hand you a recording afterwards. It doesn't have one.

What your WhatsApp call history does and doesn't keep

People sometimes hope call history is the recording. It isn't. According to WhatsApp, the Calls tab shows your incoming, outgoing and missed calls, and you can tap a call to get more information about it. That's a log of the call happening, not the audio.

  • You can remove a single call, or clear your whole call log.
  • WhatsApp says you can't email or export your call history.
  • After call history is deleted, it can't be restored unless you created a backup first.

If keeping your call log matters to you, backups matter too. My guide to fixing a stuck WhatsApp backup is worth bookmarking.

Keeping a record of a WhatsApp call without recording it

For business, the real goal is usually a record of what was agreed, not the sound of it. Here are habits that work and stay inside WhatsApp's own features:

  1. Tell the other person at the start that you'll send a written summary after the call.
  2. Take notes as you talk, ideally in a shared document or your own notes app.
  3. Straight afterwards, send a short message in the same WhatsApp chat listing what was agreed, with dates and next steps.
  4. Ask the other person to reply with a thumbs-up or a short confirmation.

That message trail is searchable, timestamped and sits next to the conversation. For a freelancer or small business owner, it's often more useful than an hour of audio you'll never replay.

Using WhatsApp voice messages instead of a call

If you want something you can replay later, consider a voice message rather than a live call. WhatsApp lists voice messages among the content that's end-to-end encrypted, and they stay in the chat like any other message, so both of you keep a copy. They're also easy to send on the move when typing is awkward.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

It's a different thing from a call, because it's one-sided and not live. But for instructions, briefs and quick updates, it gives you the replayable record you were hoping to get from a recording.

Recording other people on a WhatsApp call: check the rules first

Whatever method anyone uses, a call involves another person. Rules on recording conversations differ between countries and sometimes between regions, and some places expect everyone on the call to know. Please check the rules where you live before recording anyone, and tell people you're doing it. I'm not a lawyer and this isn't legal advice, but telling people you're recording is the safe, courteous habit.

I'd also steer clear of any app or website that claims to secretly capture other people's WhatsApp calls or messages. WhatsApp's help pages describe its encryption as a protection for users, and anything promising to get around it puts your account and your data at risk.

WhatsApp calls for small business: a simple routine

If you take client calls on WhatsApp regularly, a little routine saves a lot of memory-jogging later:

  • Book calls in advance and send an agenda in the chat.
  • Keep the call to the points on the agenda.
  • Send the written summary within a few minutes of hanging up.
  • Save key decisions into your project notes or CRM straight away.

If you can't find a record option on your WhatsApp call screen

  • That's expected. WhatsApp's help centre doesn't list a record option for calls.
  • Update the app anyway, since new features arrive in new versions, and then check the help centre for any change.
  • Check which type of call you're on. WhatsApp's pages cover one-to-one calls, group calls and WhatsApp Web calls, but none mentions recording.

Frequently asked questions

Can you record a WhatsApp call inside the app?

WhatsApp's help centre doesn't describe any built-in call recording. Its call articles cover making, answering, transferring and sharing calls, and call history, but not recording.

Why can't WhatsApp give me a recording of a call?

WhatsApp says calls are end-to-end encrypted and that it can't listen to them, so it doesn't hold a recording to give you.

Does WhatsApp call history keep the audio?

No. Call history is a log of incoming, outgoing and missed calls. WhatsApp says you can't email or export it.

What can I do instead of recording a WhatsApp call?

Take notes, then send a written summary in the chat after the call and ask the other person to confirm it. A voice message is another way to keep a replayable record.

Is it legal to record a WhatsApp call?

That depends on where you and the other person are. I can't give legal advice, so check the rules where you live before recording anyone, and tell people if you plan to.
