Squarespace ecommerce, which Squarespace calls Commerce, lets you sell products online from your site in most countries, as long as you connect Squarespace Payments, Stripe or PayPal. Where you can sell, which currency you charge in and which payment methods your customers see all depend on that payment processor and your bank account.
Here's the catch that costs store owners the most. A refund can't be undone, a cancelled order can't be un-cancelled, and the processing fee on the original sale isn't refunded by Squarespace Payments, Stripe, PayPal or Square. Squarespace also advises against refunding through your processor's own dashboard, because it can put your orders and your processor out of step. Do refunds from the Orders panel and check the amount twice.
Where you can sell and in which currency
Squarespace Payments works in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, parts of Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Stripe covers North America, parts of South America, the UK, parts of Europe and parts of Asia. PayPal covers most countries. Stripe's extended network in Africa, including South Africa, runs on Paystack, which Squarespace doesn't support, so PayPal is the route there.
You set one store currency for prices and payouts, and you can only sell in one currency at a time. With Squarespace Payments or Stripe, multi-currency checkout switches on automatically, so international customers can pay in their own currency. Which currencies you can pick depends on your bank account: Canadian accounts only support US and Canadian dollars, and Indian, Mexican and New Zealand accounts only support their national currency. Choosing the same currency as your bank account avoids your processor's conversion fee.
Payment methods by processor
| Processor | Payment methods, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Squarespace Payments | Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover, JCB, Diners Club, UnionPay, Apple Pay, Afterpay or Clearpay, Klarna, ACH (US sellers only), SEPA and iDEAL |
| Stripe | Visa and Mastercard credit and debit, American Express, Discover (US sellers only), Diners Club, JCB, Afterpay or Clearpay and Apple Pay |
| PayPal | PayPal and Venmo, with a PayPal Business account |
| Square | In-person sales through Squarespace point of sale |
If you connect PayPal alongside another processor, only currencies supported by all of them show in your settings. PayPal doesn't support the Argentine peso, Colombian peso, Indonesian rupiah or South African rand, so those disappear from your store once PayPal's connected. Cancelling and refunding orders
Cancelling an order refunds it in full, emails the customer and gives you the option to restock the items. A full refund covers products, tax, shipping and the Squarespace Commerce transaction fee if your plan charges one. A partial refund returns the amount you choose plus a matching share of that transaction fee, doesn't restock inventory, and leaves the order Pending or Fulfilled. Partial refunds are how you refund the products but keep the shipping.
- Open the Products & Services panel and click Orders.
- Click the order to open its details.
- Click Refund.
- For a full refund, leave Restock Inventory ticked if you want the items back in stock. For a partial refund, edit the amount.
- Click Issue refund and confirm. The customer's notified automatically.
You can't bulk-cancel orders, refund to store credit, or refund more than the original payment. For store credit, Squarespace suggests a discount for the refund amount instead. If a customer paid with both a gift card and a card, the gift card is refunded first. You can still refund orders after your site expires.
Refund time limits
| How the customer paid | Refund window, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| PayPal | 180 days after you receive the payment |
| Klarna | 180 days after the payment completes |
| ACH through Squarespace Payments | 180 days |
| Afterpay or Clearpay | 120 days from the purchase date |
| Card through Stripe or Squarespace Payments | No limit, but refunds are more likely to fail the longer you wait |
Card refunds usually reach the customer in 5 to 10 business days. A refund can fail if you wait too long, switch the processor account connected to your store, or the customer has filed a chargeback. Chargeback refunds don't sync with your Orders panel or inventory, so update stock by hand. Squarespace Payments sellers can't refund disputed payments at all.
Exporting your orders
For bookkeeping, go to Orders, click Export data, then Download CSV, and pick the statuses, date range and products. On the Core, Plus and Advanced plans, you can auto-export new orders to Google Drive, where they appear within an hour, or send them to Zapier. Auto-exported orders don't update when you change an order's status, so download a fresh CSV for current statuses.
Exports only cover active, visible products. Hidden products, products on disabled store pages and older versions of renamed products are left out, and so are add to cart form fields with duplicate names. Add to cart form answers only come through when you export a specific product. You also can't delete orders, apart from test orders, so your record of sales and refunds stays complete.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Making your store easier to use
Squarespace's accessibility guide is practical. Add alt text to product images that names the colour and describes any words or pictures printed on the item, because a screen reader can't describe them otherwise. Turn on image zoom, increase image spacing in the store section styles, style your Add to cart buttons so they stand out, and add a border and strong contrast to the cart icon. Size chart images usually aren't read by screen readers, so a text version helps. Squarespace notes the guide isn't legal advice.
Pulling orders into a spreadsheet and reconciling refunds each week is a job that can run without you. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
My verdict on Squarespace ecommerce
I'd run a store on Squarespace if you sell in one main currency through Squarespace Payments or Stripe, because checkout, refunds and exports all live in one Orders panel. Skip it if you need to sell in several currencies at once or rely on a payment provider Squarespace doesn't support. Set your currency to match your bank account, set a refund window in your policy, and do every refund from Orders. If you're weighing it against the obvious rival, read my Shopify or Squarespace comparison, and if you're ready to look further, here are some Squarespace alternatives.
