How to Pin Messages in Instagram DMs

The short version: Instagram lets you pin up to three messages per DM thread by pressing and holding on a message and tapping "Pin", and those pinned messages sit at the top of the chat for everyone in it to see. It works in one-to-one chats and group DMs, it does not work on vanish mode threads, and it is quietly one of the most useful features Instagram never explains.

Where pinning messages helps

Most people discover this feature by accident, usually when they are scrolling back through weeks of DM history trying to find a link, a date, or an address someone sent them three Tuesdays ago. I think of pinning as the DM equivalent of sticking a Post-it note to the top of a notebook. It does not file anything away neatly, it just makes sure the one thing that matters does not get lost under the fifty messages that came after it.

Say you run a small online store and a customer sends you their shipping address and a note about a damaged item in the same conversation where you also chat about product recommendations and the odd thank-you message. Pin the address and the complaint details at the top of the thread, and you never have to scroll back through the small talk to find them again. That is the whole point. It is not glamorous, it is just useful.

How to pin a message, step by step

The process is the same whether you are on iPhone or Android, and it takes about ten seconds once you know where to look.

  • Open Instagram and go to your Direct Messages inbox.
  • Open the specific conversation with the message you want to pin.
  • Find the message, press and hold it until a small menu pops up.
  • Tap "Pin" from that menu.
  • Confirm if prompted. The message now sits at the top of the chat under a small pin icon.

To unpin it, you do the same thing in reverse: press and hold the pinned message, then tap "Unpin". It disappears from the top and goes back to living in the normal message flow, in its original chronological spot.

The three-message limit, and why it matters

Instagram caps you at three pinned messages per conversation. That number is not arbitrary and it changes how you should use the feature. If you treat pinning like bookmarking, you will hit the limit within a week and spend more time managing pins than reading messages. The better approach is to treat your three pins as a rotating shortlist, not an archive. Pin the thing that is relevant right now, unpin it once it is dealt with, and move on.

In a client-facing business account, for example, you might pin a payment link while an invoice is outstanding, then swap it out for the next urgent item once it is paid. Three slots forces discipline, which is the point.

Pinning in group DMs works differently to how people expect

In a group chat, anyone in the group can pin a message, and anyone can unpin it too. There is no admin-only control over this the way there is with some other group settings. That means if you are running a group DM for, say, a small client project team or a community you manage, a pinned message can get removed by someone else in the group without you being asked first.

This is the bit most guides on this topic skip over entirely: pinning is not a secure or permanent way to store information in a shared chat. If you are relying on a pinned message in a group with six or more people to hold something important, like a deadline or a set of instructions, know that it can vanish the moment someone else in that group decides to pin something of their own over it, since the three-slot limit is shared across the whole group, not per person. Treat it as a convenience, not a record.

What you cannot pin, and why

A few limits are worth knowing before you rely on this feature for anything important.

  • You cannot pin messages inside a vanish mode conversation, since those messages are designed to disappear once you leave the chat, which makes pinning pointless by design.
  • You cannot pin a message that has already been unsent or deleted by the sender.
  • Pinned status does not carry over if someone restricts you or you restrict them, since restricted accounts lose visibility into the thread in other ways too.
  • If the original message was sent with a disappearing timer, as covered in our piece on disappearing messages, timers and view once, it behaves the same way: once it is gone, it is gone, pinned or not.

A worked example worth thinking through

Imagine you run a two-person consultancy and you use a shared Instagram DM with a long-term client to swap quick updates, rather than email. Over three months that thread fills up with hundreds of messages: scheduling notes, file links, the odd compliment, a cancelled meeting here and there. If you pin the Zoom link, the current invoice total, and the next deadline, anyone opening that chat sees exactly what they need in the first second, no scrolling required.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Now picture the same setup but as a group DM with the client, their assistant, and a freelancer you brought in for one project. Three people can all pin and unpin freely. The freelancer, trying to be helpful, pins a file link over your deadline reminder. Nobody did anything wrong, but your carefully placed pin is gone. This is why, for anything business-critical, I would not treat a pinned DM as your single source of truth. Put it in a shared document too. Pinning is a convenience layer on top of a conversation, not a replacement for real record keeping.

A few practical habits worth building

Once you start using pinned messages regularly, a couple of small habits make it far more useful rather than another thing to manage.

  • Unpin as you go. A thread with three stale pins from two months ago is worse than no pins at all, because it trains you to ignore the top of the chat.
  • Use it for action items, not sentiment. Pin the thing someone needs to do something about, not the nice message someone sent you last Christmas.
  • If you manage several client or customer conversations through Instagram DMs as part of your working day, pinning the next required action in each thread turns your inbox into a rough to-do list without needing a separate app.
  • Remember that muting a contact, which we cover in our guide on how to unmute someone on Instagram, has nothing to do with pinning. You can mute a noisy thread and still keep its pinned messages visible whenever you do check in.

If you are running DMs as a genuine customer service or sales channel for a small business, it is worth asking whether you have outgrown what Instagram's native tools can offer, and that is a conversation worth having with an AI consultant for small business who can look at where manual habits like pinning stop scaling and real systems need to take over.

Frequently asked questions

Can the other person see that I pinned a message?

Yes. Pinning is visible to everyone in the conversation, not just you. There is no private or hidden way to pin a message that only you can see.

How many messages can I pin in one DM?

Up to three per conversation, and that limit applies to the whole thread, not per person, which matters most in group DMs.

Does pinning a message notify the other person?

No, pinning does not send a notification. The other person will only notice if they happen to open the chat and see the pin icon at the top.

Can I pin a message in vanish mode?

No, pinning is disabled in vanish mode conversations because those messages are not meant to be kept or referenced once you leave the chat.
