Instagram has two separate features for messages that don't stick around: vanish mode, where everything sent disappears when someone leaves the chat or turns it off, and disappearing messages, where each message goes once a timer runs out. You switch either one on by swiping up in a one-to-one chat and off by swiping up again, and neither can stop someone taking a screenshot or a photo of the screen.
There's a third thing people lump in with these two: disappearing photos and videos, the view-once kind you send from the chat camera. That's a different feature with its own settings, and I've covered it in my guide to sending a disappearing photo on Instagram. This page is about the chat itself.
Vanish mode and timed messages side by side
The Help Centre describes them in separate articles, and the differences are small but they matter once you're using them with real people:
| Feature | How you turn it on | When messages go | Can you save or forward? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vanish mode | Swipe up in a chat | When someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off | No. You can't copy, save or forward the messages |
| Disappearing messages | Swipe up in a chat | After the default time has passed, which you can change | Only the ones you sent |
| Disappearing photos and videos | The icon in the bottom left of a chat, then View once, View twice or Unlimited views | After the person has viewed it, unless you've allowed a replay | You can't view your own once they're sent |
Here's the confusing bit. Both chat features use the same gesture, a swipe up from inside the conversation, so the swipe alone won't tell you which one you've got. The Help Centre ties availability to location, which I'll come back to. With disappearing messages you'll see a notification in the conversation once it's on, and you can tap and hold any message to see how long it's got left. With vanish mode there's no timer: the content goes when someone leaves the chat.
Switching vanish mode on and off
The Help Centre steps are written for the app on a phone. As of November 2026 they go like this:
- Tap Messages at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap the chat you want.
- Swipe up from the chat to turn vanish mode on.
- When you're done, swipe up in the chat again to turn it off. Everything sent in vanish mode disappears at that point, or as soon as someone leaves the chat.
If someone sends you a message in vanish mode, you'll get a notification on Instagram. Tapping it drops you into that chat in vanish mode. You'll also be told if they send you a new message outside vanish mode, so you're not left guessing which mode a reply came in.
Running a chat on a timer
Disappearing messages work more like a self-clearing chat than a secret room. The messages stay visible for the duration you've chosen, then go. To set it up:
- Tap Messages at the bottom.
- Tap a chat.
- Swipe up from the chat to turn disappearing messages on. You'll see a notification in the conversation.
- Send as normal. Messages you send from then on disappear after the default time.
- To check how long a message has left, tap and hold it.
- To change the default, tap Change timer below a message.
- To turn it off, swipe up in the chat again.
Two catches are buried in the Help Centre's small print. First, some messages aren't supported and won't disappear on their own, even with the feature on. You'll spot them by an information icon beside them, and the only way to get rid of one is to tap and hold it, then tap Delete. Second, reactions change the clock. If someone reacts to a disappearing message, it can instead disappear once everyone has seen both the message and the reaction, as long as that's still inside the maximum time before it was due to expire. So a quick heart can keep a message on screen longer than you planned.
What neither mode can stop
Both Help Centre articles carry the same warning, and it's the one I'd want every business owner to read: only use these modes with people you trust. Before anything disappears, someone can:
- Take a screenshot or screen recording of it. Instagram says you'll get a notification if it detects a screenshot, which I go into in my piece on Instagram screenshot alerts in DMs.
- Take a photo of the screen with a camera or another device. The Help Centre lists this one too, and it's the one no setting can block.
Disappearing isn't the same as unsending, either. Unsending is something you do to one message after the fact, and it works differently, as I explain in whether Instagram tells people when you unsend. Vanish mode and timers are settings you switch on before you type.
Who can use them, and where
This is where a lot of people get stuck, because the features simply aren't there for everyone. Here's what the Help Centre lists for both:
- They only work in a chat between two Instagram accounts. You can't use them with a Messenger or Facebook account.
- Disappearing messages don't work in group chats.
- Accounts you haven't connected with before can't send you message requests in vanish mode or as disappearing messages.
- Certain professional accounts can't receive messages in either mode.
- Vanish mode carries a note that it may be unavailable for countries located in Europe.
- Disappearing messages carry a note that they're only available in certain locations.
The Help Centre doesn't name the countries, so I won't guess. What it does mean is that two people with the same app can see different things when they swipe up. If you're on a business or creator account and a customer says they can't send you a vanish-mode message, the professional account note is one likely reason. For the rest of the message controls, from requests to who can reach you, see my rundown of Instagram DM settings.
Reporting a vanish-mode message after it's gone
A message disappearing doesn't put it beyond reach. The Help Centre says you can report a message or chat sent in vanish mode for up to 14 days after it disappears, even if you can't see it any more. Leave it longer than 14 days and the report won't include that message.

To report one specific message:
- From the chat, tap and hold the message you want to report.
- Tap Report and choose the reason.
- Tap Submit report. You'll also be offered the option to restrict or block the account that sent it.
To report the whole chat, tap the username at the top, tap Options in the top right, then tap Report and choose a reason. You can't report an entire group chat, only the messages, photos, videos and people in it. The Help Centre gives bullying or harassment, threats and sexual violence or exploitation as examples of what goes against its Community Standards.
When you report, the messages are decrypted and sent securely from your device to Instagram's Help team for review. Your report is anonymous, except when you're reporting an intellectual property infringement, and the person you reported won't see who did it.
What I'd tell a business account
I'd treat both features as a way to keep chat clutter down, not as proof that nothing was kept. The other person can still screenshot or photograph the screen, and you've now got no copy of your own. That's the wrong way round for a business. Stories follow different rules, and this explains whether people can see if you screenshot their Instagram story.
So skip vanish mode and timers for anything a customer dispute might need later: quotes, order details, agreed dates, delivery promises, complaints. Keep those in a normal chat where both of you can scroll back. If a conversation turns nasty in vanish mode, remember the 14 day window and report it while you still can.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between vanish mode and disappearing messages on Instagram?
Vanish mode clears everything sent once someone leaves the chat or turns it off, and you can't copy, save or forward those messages. Disappearing messages run on a timer you can change, and you can forward or save only the ones you sent.
How do I turn off vanish mode on Instagram?
Swipe up in the chat again. The same swipe turns it on and off, and content sent in vanish mode disappears when it's switched off.
Can someone screenshot a disappearing message on Instagram?
Yes. Someone can screenshot or screen record it, and Instagram says you'll get a notification if it detects a screenshot. They can also photograph the screen with another device.
Why can't I use vanish mode on Instagram?
The Help Centre says vanish mode may be unavailable for countries located in Europe, it only works between two Instagram accounts, and certain professional accounts can't receive vanish-mode messages.
Can I report a vanish-mode message after it disappears?
Yes, for up to 14 days after it disappears, even if you can't see it any more. After 14 days the report won't include that message.
