Stickers are one of the simplest bits of branding a small business can hand out, and Canva handles both kinds: printed stickers for packaging, laptops and goody bags, and digital stickers for WhatsApp, Instagram Stories or a planner. The design steps are almost the same. What changes is how you export, and that's where most sticker files go wrong.
Set up a sticker-sized design
- On the homepage banner, select Custom size.
- Under Units, choose in, mm or cm for a printed sticker, or px for a digital one.
- Enter the exact width and height of the finished sticker and select Create new design.
- Turn on File, then Settings, then Show margins and Show print bleed if you're printing.
- Build your sticker: logo, short text, an illustration or a cut-out photo. Keep words big and few.
For a round sticker, add a circle shape or circle frame filling the page, so you can see the cut shape while you design.
Cut out a photo with BG Remover
Some of the best stickers are cut-outs: your dog, your product, your own face with a speech bubble. Select the photo, then BG Remover on the editor toolbar, and Canva strips the background away. If it leaves a stray edge, reselect BG Remover and use the Erase or Restore brushes to tidy it. Canva says Background Remover is included with its premium plans.
Cut-outs work best with a clear subject against a plain background. A busy photo with lots of overlapping edges is harder for any background tool to separate cleanly, so pick your sharpest, simplest shot.

Canva lists transparent PNGs and SVGs, along with the CMYK colour profile, as features of Canva Pro, Canva for Teams, Canva Education and Canva for Nonprofits. On other plans you'll get a solid background, which is fine for a square or rectangular printed sticker but not for a shaped digital one.
The bleed rule for printed stickers
This is the catch with printed stickers. They get cut, and cutting is never perfectly exact. Canva adds 0.125 inches (3.175 mm) of bleed on all sides for products that are trimmed, and its help centre calls out crop marks as especially useful for stickers. So stretch your background colour right out to the dashed bleed line, and keep text and logos well inside the margin.
Watch for the red danger zone when you preview a Canva Print order. Canva says red means an element is close enough to the trim line to be cut, even if it's inside your margins. Move it in. A logo with its edge sliced off is the most common sticker disappointment.
Ordering stickers through Canva Print
If you'd rather not deal with print files, select the Print button in the editor when you're done. Canva says stickers are among its print products and it ships to North America, Europe and the UK, Asia, and Central and South America. You choose the material and delivery options during the order. Check the proof carefully, because Canva notes it may not be able to check your design for quality before it prints.
Sticker sheets and multiple designs
If you're printing several small stickers on one sheet at home, don't make a separate design for each. Set your page to the size of the sheet you'll print on, then lay the stickers out in rows with a little space between them so your scissors or cutter has room. I'd turn on Show rulers and guides under File, then Rulers and guides, so everything lines up. Canva says rulers only work on a computer, so this bit's a laptop job. Once it's done, you've got a sheet you can reprint whenever you're running low, and you won't have to rebuild the layout.

Keep it simple. A sticker is seen for a second on a parcel or a laptop lid, so one image and three or four words beat a paragraph every time.
