How to Make a Poster in Canva That Prints Well

To make a poster in Canva, search the Create tab for poster or set a Custom size in inches or millimetres, then turn on margins and print bleed under File, then Settings. Design with big type, then download as PDF Print with crop marks and bleed, or select Print to order through Canva Print.

A poster has one job: be read from across a room in about three seconds. That shapes every decision, from the size you set at the start to the file you send the printer at the end. Canva makes the design part easy. The parts that trip people up are physical: real-world size, bleed, and colours that looked bright on screen but print dull.

Pick your poster size first

Decide the printed size before you add anything, because changing it later means reworking the layout. You've got two ways in:

  1. On the homepage, open the Create tab and search for poster to start from a blank poster-sized design.
  2. Or select Custom size on the homepage banner, pick in, mm or cm under Units, enter the exact width and height your printer quoted, and select Create new design.
  3. If you're ordering through Canva, you can also select Print on the homepage to start from a blank print design.

I'd always use the printer's own measurements. A poster for a frame needs to match that frame exactly; a poster for a noticeboard has more leeway.

Turn on print guides before you design

  1. Go to File, then Settings, and select Show margins. A broken line shows where your safe area ends.
  2. In the same menu, select Show print bleed. A dashed line appears near the edges.
  3. Stretch background colours and photos right out to the bleed line so there's no white edge after trimming.
  4. Keep your headline, date, logo and any QR code inside the margin.

If you can't see these options under Settings, Canva says to look under File, then Rulers and guides.

Poster layout that reads from a distance

ElementWhat I'd aim forWhy
HeadlineFive or six words, the biggest thing on the pageIt's all most people will read
Key detailDate, place or offer, second biggestThe reason to stop
ImageOne strong photo or graphicSeveral small ones turn to clutter
Call to actionA web address or QR code near the bottomSo they can act later

Step back from your screen, literally. Zoom out until the poster's the size of a stamp on your monitor. If you can still read the headline, it'll work on a wall.

The ruler catch on Canva posters

Here's the thing that confuses people when they print. Canva's rulers show the canvas size, not the finished physical product. If you designed in pixels, the rulers show pixels. And when you pick a product in Canva's Print panel, Canva scales your design to fit, but the rulers don't change. So don't measure your poster with the on-screen rulers and assume that's what will come out of the printer. Set your size in inches or millimetres from the start and you avoid the whole problem. Rulers also only work on a computer, not on mobile.

Bleed changes the file size too. Canva gives a worked example: an A4 design with bleed exports as roughly 222 mm by 309 mm rather than 216 mm by 303 mm. That's normal, and it's what a printer expects. If you're printing somewhere other than Canva Print, check their bleed rules, as they may trim differently.

Colour that survives printing

Canva's advice is to use CMYK colours for anything you print, because colours don't look the same on a screen as they do on paper. Bright neon greens and electric blues are the usual victims. When you download, choose PDF Print, which Canva describes as 300 dpi with an option for an RGB or CMYK colour profile. Canva also says it may not be able to check your design for quality before it goes to print, so proof it yourself.

Download or order your poster

Canva PrintThe Print button in the editorNot handling files at all

For Canva Print, you choose the material and delivery options during the order. For a print shop, send the PDF Print file and ask for a proof if it's a big run.

My verdict

Set the real size first, switch on bleed and margins before you design, and keep the headline enormous. Proof a printed copy at home on A4 if you can, even scaled down, to catch typos you'll miss on a screen. Ask someone who hasn't seen it to read it back to you, too: if they can't tell you the date and place in a few seconds, the hierarchy needs work. My Canva review covers whether Canva suits your business more widely, and if your poster has a folded companion piece, here's how I approach making a brochure in Canva.

Frequently asked questions

What size should I make a poster in Canva?

Use the exact size your printer or frame needs. Set it with Custom size in inches, millimetres or centimetres, or search the Create tab for poster.

How do I add bleed to a poster in Canva?

Go to File, then Settings, and select Show print bleed. Canva adds 0.125 inches (3.175 mm) on each side for trimmed products.

Which file type is best for printing a Canva poster?

PDF Print. Canva describes it as 300 dpi with bleed, crop marks and an RGB or CMYK colour option.

Why don't Canva's rulers match my printed poster?

Canva's rulers reflect the canvas size, not the physical product, and don't change when Canva scales a design for print.

Can Canva print my poster?

Yes. Select the Print button in the editor to order through Canva Print and choose material and delivery options.
