The Perplexity student discount is called Education Pro: verified students and educators get Perplexity Pro at a discount, plus education-specific tips and nudges, once a company called SheerID has confirmed their status. Perplexity's help pages don't print the discounted price; they say your verified discount is applied at checkout.
That's the whole deal in two sentences. The useful part is the detail: how to verify, what you get, and what to do when the discount doesn't show, because Perplexity's own help pages describe a few ways it can go wrong.
What Education Pro includes
Perplexity's help page says Education Pro includes everything in Pro, plus education-specific tips and nudges. The Pro features it names are:
- Access to Perplexity Computer.
- Access to Learn Mode.
- Unlimited Pro Searches.
- File and image uploads.
- Access to premium models.
The separate Pro page adds a few more: 10x as many citations per answer, extended access to Research mode, enhanced image generation and limited video generation. There's one wobble between the two pages. The Education page says unlimited Pro Searches, while the Pro page says Pro Search is applied automatically up to your plan's limit. As a Pro subscriber you also get Pro support: a Pro channel on Discord, and contact through the Help menu, where Perplexity says it aims to reply within 1 to 2 business days.
Who qualifies, and what SheerID does
Education Pro is for verified students and for educators and faculty. Perplexity doesn't check your status itself. It uses SheerID, a third-party verification partner, to confirm you're a student. You can create your Perplexity account with any email, personal or student, and you don't have to verify with the same email you log in with.
If your school isn't on SheerID's list, Perplexity's help page says you can ask SheerID to add it.
How to verify as a student
- Sign up at perplexity.ai with any email, or log in to your existing account.
- Click Upgrade in the bottom left corner of the app.
- Toggle to the Education plan and click Verify as student.
- Complete the SheerID check. If it says pending, you wait; if it's rejected, Education Pro isn't available to you for now.
- Once approved, open perplexity.ai in a desktop browser, not the mobile app, and click Upgrade Plan in the bottom left of the sidebar.
- Stay in the Personal view and select Pro. Your verified discount is applied at checkout.
Write down which Perplexity account you used. Because verification and login can use different emails, the help page says people sometimes lose track of where they redeemed it, including on an Apple Relay masked email.
Learn Mode, the student extra
Learn Mode is a version of Perplexity's search built for studying. Instead of giving you the answer, it explains it step by step, asks questions, gives hints, adjusts to your level, and can create flashcards, multiple-choice quizzes and free-response exercises from your course notes inside the session.
Perplexity's own page is a little contradictory here. It says the mode is available for all users, including free and logged-out users, and also that "at the moment" the Learn toggle is only available to verified students. Go by the second line: if you want Learn Mode, verify. In the Comet browser, students add it through Edit widgets, then Shortcut, then Learn Mode under Advanced. When verification or checkout goes wrong

The full-price row is the one to remember. If a previous subscription on your account is past due, Perplexity says it can block the discounted checkout and send you to a payment page for the full price instead. Paying that won't fix anything. Contact support first.

Cancelling before you delete your account
If you've added payment details, Perplexity says to cancel your subscription before deleting your account, because deleting the account doesn't end the subscription. On desktop you cancel in Settings, under Subscription, then Manage Subscription. If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, you cancel there instead, since the app store controls billing. Subscriptions renew until you cancel them.
Is the student discount worth it?
I'd verify first and subscribe only after the discount shows at checkout. Skip paying the full price to fix a checkout problem: that's the one mistake the help page specifically warns against. If you're a student who wants Learn Mode, the discount is the only route to it right now. If you mainly want quick answers, using Perplexity day to day on the free plan may be enough to start.
