How to Group in Canva (and Ungroup) Step by Step

To group in Canva, drag over your elements or hold Shift and click each one, then choose Group on the floating toolbar, or press Command or Ctrl and G. The detail people trip over: content from third-party apps can't be grouped until you save it as a PNG or JPG and re-upload it.

Anyone who's built a logo lockup, a sale badge or a testimonial card in Canva knows the moment: you nudge one shape and the whole arrangement falls apart. Grouping fixes that by gluing several elements together so they move, resize and copy as one. It's one of the small habits that makes a design feel professional.

I'll take you through grouping and ungrouping as Canva's help centre describes it, what you can and can't group, and how it plays with layers. Canva's group article covers desktop steps, so that's where I'll focus.

Selecting elements to group in Canva

Before you can group anything, Canva needs to know which elements belong together. There are two selection methods in the help article:

  • Drag a selection box over the elements you want, starting from an empty part of the page.
  • Or hold Shift and click each element one at a time, which is better when other items sit in between.

Once several elements are highlighted, a floating toolbar appears above them. That toolbar is where the Group button lives.

Making a group in Canva, step by step

  1. Open your design in the editor on a computer.
  2. Select the elements by dragging over them, or by holding Shift and clicking each one.
  3. Choose Group on the floating toolbar.
  4. Check the outline: you should see one box around everything.

There's also a shortcut. Canva's help says to press Command and G on a Mac, or Ctrl and G on Windows, with your elements selected. It doesn't list a matching shortcut for ungrouping, so use the toolbar for that.

Changing one item inside a Canva group

A group doesn't lock you out of the pieces. Click the group to select it, then click the element inside. Canva's help says you can resize it with the corner handles, rotate it with the rotate handle or drag it, and the group stays intact while you do. That's handy when only the colour of one icon needs changing, or one word in a badge has a typo.

Ungrouping in Canva when you need to split things up

Ungrouping works from the same floating toolbar, and the help article gives you two outcomes:

  • Select the whole group and choose Ungroup to split every element apart.
  • Select just one element inside the group and choose Ungroup to pull that single item out.

I'd use the second option more than you'd think. A sale sticker with a stray shadow, for instance, can lose the shadow without breaking the rest.

What you can and can't group in Canva

The help centre is quite generous here: you can group all element types, including charts, tables and grids, with one exception, which is sheet elements. The real snag is content from third-party apps on the Apps tab. Canva says that kind of content can't be grouped with other elements.

The workaround in the help article goes like this: right-click the app content, choose Download selection, save it as a PNG or JPG, then upload it back to Canva. Once it's re-uploaded, it behaves like a regular image, so grouping works again. It adds a step, but it saves you rebuilding the layout.

What you're groupingWhat Canva's help says
Text, shapes, photos, graphicsCan be grouped
Charts, tables and gridsCan be grouped
Sheet elementsCan't be grouped
Content from third-party apps on the Apps tabCan't be grouped until it's saved as PNG or JPG and re-uploaded

Groups and layers in Canva: sorting what sits on top

Grouping and layering are different jobs, though they're easy to mix up. Elements in Canva sit in layers, and front layers appear above back layers. When your group hides behind a background photo, the fix is a layer change, not a regroup.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  1. Select the group.
  2. Click Position on the toolbar above the editor (click the button first if you can't see it).
  3. Choose Forward, Backward, To front or Back.

Canva's help says the options you see depend on where the element already sits in the stack, so the choices may look slightly different from one design to the next.

Using Canva groups for brand graphics and social posts

If you run a small business, groups are most useful on anything you reuse. A logo with a tagline, a headshot with a name strip, a button with its icon: group each one, then copy the group onto the next page or post and the spacing travels with it. It's the quickest route to graphics that look consistent. I use the same habit when I plan graphics for an Instagram business post, because a tidy group means the post looks the same every week.

If you're still deciding whether the tool suits you, my Canva review with what to check first covers who gets the most from it.

If you can't group elements in Canva

  • You've only selected one element. Grouping needs at least two, so hold Shift and add another.
  • One item comes from a third-party app. Download it as a PNG or JPG and re-upload it, as above.
  • One item is a sheet element, which can't be grouped.
  • You can't see the Group button. Select the elements again, because the floating toolbar only appears while they're highlighted.

Menus move around between Canva updates, so if a button has a different name on your screen, search Canva's help centre for the current wording.

Frequently asked questions

How do I group elements in Canva?

Drag over the elements or hold Shift and click each one, then choose Group on the floating toolbar. On a Mac press Command and G, on Windows press Ctrl and G.

How do I ungroup in Canva?

Select the whole group and choose Ungroup on the floating toolbar to split everything apart. To remove one element, select that element and choose Ungroup.

Can I edit one element inside a Canva group?

Yes. Click the group, then click the element inside it. You can resize, rotate or drag it and the group stays together.

Why can't I group something in Canva?

Sheet elements can't be grouped, and neither can content from third-party apps on the Apps tab. Download that content as a PNG or JPG, upload it again, and it behaves like a normal image.

What's the difference between grouping and layering in Canva?

Grouping joins elements so they move as one. Layering decides which element sits in front, and you change it with Position on the toolbar.
