How to Join the Amazon Associates Program (and Survive the First 180 Days)

To join the Amazon Associates affiliate program, sign up on the Associates Central site for your country, list every website, app or social account you'll promote on, and start sharing your tagged links. Amazon only reviews your application once you've driven at least three qualified sales within the first 180 days, and your own orders don't count. Pass that review and you're in; miss it and the account is closed.

That 180 day rule is the part most people don't hear about until it's too late. Signing up takes minutes. Getting approved is a separate test, and it's based on real customers buying through your links, not on how good your site looks on the day you apply.

Who can join Amazon Associates

Amazon says bloggers, publishers and content creators with a qualifying website or mobile app can take part. Its application review page adds social accounts to that list, with conditions. Here's what Amazon's own help pages say it checks:

Where you'll promoteWhat Amazon looks for
Website or blogOriginal content that's publicly available, recent (generally within the last 60 days) and owned by you. Amazon's rule of thumb is at least 10 posts.
Social mediaOnly Facebook (open groups and fan pages, not personal pages), Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, TikTok and Twitch. An established page with a substantive number of organic followers, in most cases at least 500, and posts and follower counts visible to non followers.
Mobile appAvailable in the Google Play, Apple or Amazon app stores, free to download, with original content.
Any of themNot an unsuitable site: Amazon rules out sites with explicit, violent, hateful, deceptive or illegal content, sites aimed at children, and domains or usernames that use an Amazon trademark.

Original content has a specific meaning here. Amazon's participation requirements say content that uses third party material must add significant commentary, analysis or transformation. A page of copied product descriptions won't pass.

How to join, step by step

  1. Pick the right country programme. Amazon runs the Associates Program in seventeen locations, and each has its own sign up page. If most of your readers buy from Amazon.co.uk, join the UK programme, not the US one.
  2. Sign up with your Amazon account and fill in the application completely and accurately. Amazon's agreement makes you responsible for keeping these details up to date.
  3. List every site you'll use: your website, app, and the exact URL of each social profile (not just instagram.com).
  4. Complete the tax interview and choose how you want to be paid.
  5. Create tagged links from Associates Central. Amazon calls these Special Links, and each carries your tracking ID, something like abcd-20.
  6. Add the required disclosure statement to your site (more on that below).
  7. Publish useful content with your links and aim for three qualified sales from real customers well inside 180 days.

The 180 day review, and why accounts get closed

Amazon's help page is blunt about this. Its team checks your application once you've driven qualified sales, and it requires at least three within the first 180 days. Personal orders don't qualify. In the review it checks every site you listed against its customer experience bar, so keep your site list current.

Two details make this stricter than it sounds. First, Amazon says it isn't able to reassess an application once it's been rejected. Second, if your application is rejected for any reason other than unsuitable content, or your account is closed for a violation, you can't rejoin without Amazon's advance authorisation. If the rejection was only for unsuitable content, you can reapply once you've fixed it.

Another common rejection Amazon lists is not using the tagged links on the sites in your application. If you reapply with a new account, you need to swap your old links for links carrying the new tag.

How Amazon pays you: the 24 hour window

This is the rule I'd want every new affiliate to understand before writing a single review. Under Amazon's Commission Income Statement, a qualifying purchase happens when someone clicks your link and buys during a session that ends at whichever comes first:

  • 24 hours after the click,
  • the customer placing an order, or
  • the customer clicking another associate's link.

Items added to the basket during that session still count if the order is completed within 89 days of the first click, and the product has to be shipped and paid for within 180 days of the purchase. Commission is worked out on what Amazon receives, minus things like shipping, gift wrap, taxes and credits.

Commission rates differ by product category. Amazon's US home page headlines commission of up to 10 in every 100 spent on qualifying purchases and programmes, while the UK page says up to 12 in every 100. Amazon says commission is paid approximately 60 days after the end of the month it was earned.

US and UK programmes compared

They're separate programmes with separate agreements. Amazon's pages show these differences, all as of October 2026:

Amazon.com (US)Amazon.co.uk (UK)
Headline top commissionUp to 10 in every 100Up to 12 in every 100
Direct deposit minimum$10£25
Gift card minimum and maximum$10, up to $2,000£25, up to £5,000
Cheque minimum$100, with a $15 processing fee£50, no processing fee listed
Agreement is withAmazon.com, under Washington state law with binding arbitrationAmazon Europe Core, under the law of Luxembourg

The minimums matter more than people think. Amazon can hold your commission until you reach the threshold for your payment method, so a small site can wait months for its first payout. Also note that Amazon can withhold accrued commission from an account with no substantial activity for at least 3 years.

The disclosure you must add

Amazon's operating agreement requires you to state clearly and prominently on your site: "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases." For social media, Amazon says the statement must be associated with your account.

That isn't the whole job. Amazon's help page says you also need a legally compliant disclosure next to the links themselves, and gives examples as simple as "(paid link)", "#ad" or "#CommissionsEarned". I've written a fuller guide on how to disclose affiliate links if you want wording for each platform.

Rules that catch new associates

  • No links in printed material, ebooks or offline promotion. Amazon bans all offline promotional activity with its links.
  • Links in emails and DMs are allowed only when the recipient opted in.
  • No rewards or incentives for using your links, and no asking people to click to support you.
  • Don't hide where a link goes with a shortener that makes it unclear you're linking to Amazon.
  • Don't make claims about products, prices or Amazon policies that aren't accurate. Amazon's own example is calling a 64 GB phone a 128 GB phone.

Associates or the Influencer Program?

Amazon points creators with an established social following to the separate Amazon Influencer Program, which gives you a storefront page on Amazon. If that sounds more like you, see my guide to the Amazon Influencer Program requirements.

My advice before you apply

Don't apply on day one of a new blog. Build the content first, because the 180 day clock starts when you sign up, not when you start getting traffic. Write a handful of buying guides and comparisons that already get visits, then join, add your links and disclosure, and give yourself the full window to earn three real sales. Treat the first six months as a probation period, because that's exactly how Amazon treats it.

Frequently asked questions

How many sales do you need for Amazon Associates approval?

Amazon says its team reviews your application once you've driven at least three qualified sales within the first 180 days. Personal orders don't qualify.

How long does the Amazon affiliate cookie last?

Amazon's session ends 24 hours after the click, when the customer places an order, or when they click another associate's link, whichever comes first. Items added to the basket in that session count if the order is completed within 89 days.

Can I join Amazon Associates with just an Instagram account?

Yes, if it meets Amazon's rules: an established, public Instagram account with a substantive number of organic followers, in most cases at least 500, and posts and follower numbers visible to non followers.

When does Amazon Associates pay?

Amazon says commission is paid approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which it was earned, once you reach the minimum for your payment method.

Is the UK Amazon Associates programme different from the US one?

Yes. It's a separate programme with its own agreement and payment minimums. As of October 2026 the UK direct deposit minimum is £25, while the US minimum is $10.
