How to Invite People to a Facebook Group (Links and Approvals)

To invite people to a Facebook group, open the group, tap Invite (or Share), and choose friends to invite or copy the group link. For private hidden groups, admins decide whether invite links can be used by admins only, admins and moderators, or anyone in the group, and invitations may need approval.

Growing a Facebook group usually starts with invites. Facebook lets members invite friends directly, and lets admins control how invite links work, especially in private hidden groups. The detail most people miss is what happens after someone's invited: approval, and a preview period. Here's how inviting works from both sides of the invitation.

Steps to invite people to a Facebook group

  1. Open the Facebook group.
  2. Tap Invite (on some versions it's under Share or the group's menu).
  3. Pick friends from the list, or search for people.
  4. Send the invitations, or copy the group link to share elsewhere.

A link is the easiest way to invite people who aren't your Facebook friends, such as customers from your email list. For private hidden groups, Facebook says admins can choose to allow invitations with a link, and decide who can use them: admins only, admins and moderators, or anyone in the group.

For a community you want to keep focused, admins only or admins and moderators is the safer choice. Opening it to everyone grows a group faster but gives you less control over who arrives.

What happens after someone's invited

Facebook has help on what happens when you're invited to a group, and one detail stands out: after an invitation is approved by an admin or moderator, the invited person can use preview mode for 28 days. That gives them time to look around before they fully join. If you invite someone and they don't seem to appear, the invitation may still be waiting for approval.

If you're an admin: review your settings

  • Decide who can invite members, and whether invites need admin approval.
  • Add membership questions so you know why people want to join.
  • Pin the group rules so new members see them first.
  • Add a moderator to help approve requests if the group grows quickly.

Admins can also remove members and change group settings, so you stay in control if an invite brings in someone who doesn't fit.

Inviting your customers to a business group

Groups are a strong way for small businesses to build a community around what they do, from a customer support group to a club for regular buyers. The best invitations come from places your customers already trust: your newsletter, your website, your receipts or a post on your business Page. Explain what members get, such as tips, early news or a place to ask questions, so the invitation feels like a benefit rather than another notification.

When people decline or ignore an invite

Not everyone will join, and that's fine. Facebook doesn't need you to chase people, and repeated invitations are more likely to annoy than persuade. If someone joins later through a link you've shared elsewhere, the group was simply ready for them at a different time. Focus on making the group worth joining, and word of mouth does more than invitations ever will, especially once members start sharing useful posts.

Inviting without spamming

  • Invite people who'd find the group useful, not your whole friends list.
  • Send a short personal message explaining what the group is for.
  • Share the link in places where interested people already are, such as your newsletter or website.
  • Don't repeatedly invite people who ignored the first invitation.

Why you can't invite people

  • The admin has limited invites. In private hidden groups, link invites can be restricted to admins or the admin team.
  • You're not a member yet. You need to be in the group to invite others.
  • Your app is out of date. Update Facebook, since the Invite option moves between versions.

My verdict

Open the group, tap Invite and choose people, or share the group link. If you're an admin of a private hidden group, decide carefully who can use invite links, and expect invitations to need approval. Invite people who'll value the group, with a personal note, and you'll grow a community rather than a crowd.
