Best AI Icon Generators: 10 Tools for App and Website Icons

The best AI icon generators create app icons, website symbols and simple graphics from a short description, often in a style you choose. App-focused tools export every size the app stores ask for, while design platforms suit icons for slides, posts and documents. Ten options follow in no particular order.

Icons are tiny, but they carry a lot of trust. A crisp app icon or a tidy set of website symbols tells people you've thought about the details, and a blurry one does the opposite.

The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If what you need is closer to a logo, my guide to making an AI logo for free is the better starting point.

What Apple's design guidelines say about app icons

If your icon is for an Apple app, one flat image isn't the whole job any more. Apple's Human Interface Guidelines say iOS, iPadOS, macOS and watchOS app icons include a background layer and one or more foreground layers. You import those layers into Icon Composer, a design tool included with Xcode, to set the background, apply visual effects and annotate default, dark and mono versions.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

That's a useful test for any AI icon tool. Ask for the foreground symbol and the background as separate pieces of artwork, and check the result still reads clearly in dark and single-colour versions, because that's how many people will see it.

App icons, interface symbols and everyday icons

App icons are the single image people tap on their home screen, so they need to be bold, simple and recognisable at a tiny size. Interface symbols are the small pictures inside an app or website, and they need to match each other. Everyday icons for slides and documents can be looser.

Pick the tool for the job in front of you. App makers benefit from exports in every required size, while marketers usually want icons that slot straight into the design tool they already use.

Questions to ask before you generate an icon

  1. Will it still be clear at the smallest size it appears?
  2. Can I get the foreground and background as separate layers?
  3. Does it export SVG or the exact sizes the app stores need?
  4. Can it make a whole set of icons in one consistent style?
  5. Am I allowed to use the icon commercially?
  6. Can I edit the icon later without starting again?

Signs an icon won't work

  • It turns to mush at small sizes. Simplify the shape.
  • It relies on text. Words disappear on tiny icons.
  • It vanishes in dark mode. Test every appearance.
  • It doesn't match your other icons. Regenerate as a set.

My plain advice on choosing an AI icon generator

Keep it simple. The icons people remember are usually one shape and two colours, so resist the urge to squeeze your whole brand story into a square. Generate several options, shrink them to the size of a fingertip and pick the one you can still recognise.

And remember that icons live alongside your other visuals. If you're deciding where to design the rest, my comparison of two popular design tools for small businesses will help you choose a home for them.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI icon generator?

An AI icon generator creates icons from a short text description, such as app icons, interface symbols or simple graphics for slides and websites.

Are there free AI icon generators?

Yes, a few tools name a free plan, a free account or free use without sign-up. The free plan column above shows what each tool's own site says.

Can I use an AI icon as my app icon?

Yes, but check the tool's terms for commercial use, and follow the platform's own guidelines for layers, sizes and appearance modes.

What format should icons be in?

SVG is ideal for websites and interfaces because it stays sharp at any size. App stores ask for specific image sizes, which some tools export automatically.

How do I make a matching set of icons?

Use the same style settings and description pattern for every icon, and choose a tool that generates sets in one consistent style.

Do I need a designer for my app icon?

Not always. AI tools give you strong starting points, but a designer can refine the final version so it works in every appearance mode.
