How to Change Your Threads Profile Picture (Instagram Rules)

To change your Threads profile picture, go to your profile, tap Edit profile, tap your current picture and choose a new photo, or import the one from Instagram. A picture changed on Threads only changes Threads. Verified profiles are the exception: Meta says they can only import their profile picture from Instagram.

You'd think your Threads picture would simply mirror Instagram. It doesn't, unless you tell it to, and verified accounts play by a different rule altogether. Meta explains this in its Threads settings table, which is easy to miss. Here's how to change the picture, how the Instagram link works, and how to pick a photo that works at tiny sizes.

Steps to change your Threads profile picture

  1. Open Threads and go to your profile.
  2. Tap or click Edit profile below your profile information.
  3. Tap your current profile picture.
  4. Choose an option, such as a new photo or importing your picture from Instagram.
  5. Save your changes.

Changing it on a computer

The same option is on Threads.com. Meta's help page describes clicking Edit profile below your profile information at the top of your profile, then clicking your profile picture and choosing from the options. Doing it on a computer makes it easier to pick a high-quality image from your files rather than a quick snap from your camera roll, which is worth it for a business account.

Threads, Instagram, or both?

Where you change itWhat updates
In the Threads appThreads only
In the Instagram appOnly your Instagram picture, unless you import it to Threads
Verified profileCan only import the picture from Instagram

So if you updated your Instagram photo and your Threads profile still shows the old one, nothing's broken. Meta keeps them separate unless you choose to import. The same rule applies to your bio and link: change them on Threads and only Threads updates.

The verified-account exception

If your profile is verified, Meta says you can only import a profile picture from Instagram, rather than uploading a different one on Threads. In practice, verified profiles keep one matching picture across both apps. If you want a new verified photo, change it on Instagram first, then bring it across.

Your picture is always public

Even on a private Threads profile, Meta says your profile photo is always public, visible to anyone on or off Threads, including on Facebook. Pick a picture you're comfortable with strangers seeing. A private profile hides your posts, not your face.

Choosing a photo that works on Threads

  • Use a clear, close-cropped face for a personal profile. Your picture appears tiny next to every post and reply.
  • Use your logo for a brand account, ideally a simple version that's readable small.
  • Keep it consistent with Instagram so people recognise you instantly, even though Threads doesn't force it.
  • Choose a plain, contrasting background so the picture stands out in a busy feed.
  • Don't change it constantly. Followers recognise accounts by the picture before the name, so every change means a short spell where people scroll straight past you.

Should it match Instagram?

For most people and businesses, yes. Threads is built around your Instagram audience for many users, so matching pictures help people know they've found the right account. The one case for a different picture is if you use Threads for a separate purpose, such as a personal account alongside a business Instagram. Then a distinct photo avoids confusion.

If your picture won't update

If the new photo doesn't appear, check where you changed it: an Instagram change won't show on Threads unless you imported it. Close and reopen the app, as profile pictures can take a moment to refresh across devices. And if you're verified and can't find an upload option, that's expected: import from Instagram instead.

A quick checklist for business accounts

  • Export your logo as a square image with some space around it, so nothing important gets cut off by the circular crop.
  • Check how it looks in dark mode as well as light mode.
  • Use the same picture on your other social profiles, so a customer who follows you on one platform spots you on the next.
  • Keep a copy of the final file somewhere sensible, so next time you update every profile at once.

Once it's live, look at your profile from a friend's phone or a logged-out browser. It's the quickest way to see what everyone else sees, and to spot a crop that cuts off the top of your head or half your logo.

If your business account is verified, remember the order: change it on Instagram, then import to Threads. Doing it the other way round simply won't work.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

While you're in Edit profile, it's worth checking your bio and link, which follow the same Threads-only rule. If you're also refreshing Instagram, my guides on changing the Instagram app icon and linking Facebook to Instagram cover the sister app, and my guide to changing your Spotify profile picture shows how another app handles it.

My verdict

Change your Threads picture from Edit profile, and remember it only updates Threads unless you import from Instagram. If you're verified, do it the other way round: update Instagram and import. Whichever route you take, use a clear, simple image, because that tiny circle does a lot of work in a fast-moving feed.
