To find someone on Facebook, tap Search, type their name and press Enter, then choose People. Narrow the results with filters for city, education, work and mutual friends. If they still don't show up, they may have limited who can find them, or one of you has blocked the other.
Most people stop at the first page of results. The filters are what make the difference, especially with a common name. Here's how to search well, built from Facebook's Help Center, read in October 2026.
How to find someone on Facebook, step by step
- Click or tap Search at the top of Facebook.
- Type the person's name and press Enter.
- Choose People to see only profiles.
- Add filters for city, education, work or mutual friends.
- Open the profile to check it's the right person.
Facebook says you can apply as many filters as you like, and some filters may ask you for a little more information about the person.
Use keywords, not just names
Facebook search understands keywords. Its help gives examples like "Caroline wedding" or "cookie recipe Lisa". So if you know where someone works or a group you're both in, try their first name plus that detail. You can also click a search prediction as you type to save time.
Search filters and when to use them
| Filter | Best for |
|---|---|
| City | Common names, or someone who's moved |
| Education | Old school or university friends |
| Work | Former colleagues |
| Mutual friends | Friends of friends you've met once |

Other ways Facebook helps you find people
- People You May Know: Facebook's suggestions, based on things like mutual friends. Here's why Facebook suggests the friends it does.
- Uploading contacts: Facebook says you can find friends by uploading contacts from your phone or email accounts.
- Messenger: if you only want to message them, searching in Messenger works too. See how to find someone on Messenger.
Why you can't find someone on Facebook
- Blocking: Facebook says if you've blocked someone or they've blocked you, you won't see their profile. If you have extra profiles, blocking is managed separately on each.
- Their privacy settings: people can control who can look them up using their email address or phone number, and who can send them friend requests.
- Their About details are hidden: if someone hides where they live or work, the city and work filters can't match them.
- A different name: they may use a nickname, a married name or a name in another script.
Found them but can't add them?
Some people don't show an Add friend button, which Facebook says depends on their privacy settings. There's also a limit on your side: you can have up to 1,000 sent friend requests waiting for a reply, and if you send more, Facebook deletes the oldest one.
Will they know you searched for them?
Facebook's search help doesn't describe any alert to the person you search for, and you can search without adding or following anyone. Viewing their profile is just looking.
Message them without adding them
You don't need to be friends to get in touch. Facebook says you can send messages to anyone, but messages to people you're not friends with may land in their Message Requests folder, so they might not see it straight away. Messages won't reach anyone who has blocked you.
Search tips for common names
- Start with first and last name, then add a town or employer as a keyword.
- Try the spelling they'd use, including a middle name or a shortened first name.
- Search a mutual friend first, then look through their friends list if it's visible to you.
- Use the People filter before you scroll, or you'll be wading through Pages and posts.
Find someone you searched for before
If you looked someone up last week and can't remember their name, your activity log can help. Facebook's activity log includes a Logged information category with your search history. Click your profile picture, then Settings and Privacy, then Activity Log, and look under Logged information. Only you can see your activity log.
Control who can find you
It works both ways. Facebook's privacy settings let you choose who can search for you by email or phone number, who can send you friend requests, and whether search engines outside Facebook link to your profile. If you'd rather be harder to find, check those settings under Privacy.
My advice
Start with the name and one filter you're sure about, usually city or mutual friends. Two filters is often all it takes. If someone never appears, accept it might be their choice and don't try to get round it with fake profiles.
