To edit a caption on Instagram, open your post, tap Options (the three dots) above it, tap Edit, change the caption and tap Done. The same steps let you add a caption you forgot or delete one completely. You don't need to delete and repost, so you keep every like and comment the post already has.
It's one of the most useful fixes on Instagram, and plenty of people still repost a whole photo over a typo because they don't know it's there.
Below are the steps on the app and on a computer, how to add a caption to a post you shared without one, and two other things people call captions that live in different places. All of it comes from Instagram's Help Center, read in October 2026.
How to edit a caption on the Instagram app
- Go to the post on your profile.
- Tap Options, the three dots above your photo or video.
- Tap Edit.
- Edit, delete or add your caption, then tap Done.
Instagram's help article describes the same steps for adding, editing and deleting, so whichever you need, it's this one screen.
How to edit a caption on a computer
- Open the post on instagram.com.
- Open the post's options menu.
- Click Edit.
- Edit, delete or add a caption, then click Done.
Add a caption to a post you shared without one
Forgot to write anything? Instagram says you can add a caption to a photo or video you've already shared, using exactly the same Edit screen. Tap Options, then Edit, type your caption and tap Done.
For next time, the caption box appears just before you share. Instagram's steps are: tap Create, pick or take your photo or video, tap Next (adding effects or filters if you like), tap Next again, then Add a caption, enter it and tap OK, then Share.
What else you can fix on the Edit screen
The Edit screen does more than captions. Instagram's help on editing posts also covers changing the location on an existing post, and its alt text help uses the same route:
| What you want to change | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Caption text | Options, then Edit | Add, edit or delete |
| Alt text on a photo | Options, Edit, then Edit Alt Text | Read aloud by screen readers |
| Location | Options, then Edit | Covered in Instagram's edit posts help |
| Closed captions on a reel | Options, Edit, then More options | Turn auto captions or translations on or off |
Edit alt text while you're there
Alt text is the description screen readers read out for people with visual impairments. Instagram writes an automatic version using object recognition, and you can replace it with a better one. After posting:
- Go to the photo and tap Options.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Edit Alt Text in the bottom right.
- Write your alt text and tap Done.
Instagram notes this description is only read if someone is using a screen reader, so it won't change what anyone else sees.
Caption versus closed captions on reels
This is where a lot of searches go wrong. Your caption is the text under your post. Closed captions on a reel are the words of what's said in the video, which Instagram can write out automatically at the bottom of the screen using speech recognition.
To manage closed captions on a reel you've already posted:
- Go to your profile and open the reel.
- At the top, tap Options, then Edit.
- Tap More options.
- Use the toggles next to Enable closed captions and Translate closed captions.
Instagram says closed captions on posted reels default to your caption settings, but you can still change them after posting. For other changes to a reel, see my guide on editing an Instagram reel after posting.

Tips for caption edits that don't backfire
- Fix typos and broken details quickly. You're changing the existing post, so its likes and comments stay put and there's no reason to live with a mistake.
- Check your formatting after saving. If your paragraphs run together, my guide to adding line breaks in Instagram captions sorts it.
- Add hashtags to the caption by editing it if you forgot them, or put them in a comment instead. My guide to hashtags in the caption or comments weighs up both.
When editing isn't enough
Editing changes words and details, not the photo or video itself. If the image is wrong, Instagram's Edit and Delete Your Posts help covers deleting the post, and also how to recover deleted photos, videos, reels and stories if you change your mind. Deleting does lose the likes and comments, so it's worth trying the Edit screen first.
My verdict
To edit a caption on Instagram, go Options, Edit, change it, Done. It works for adding, fixing and deleting captions on posts you've already shared, it keeps your engagement intact, and while you're there it's worth checking the alt text and, for reels, the closed captions.
