How to Space a Caption on Instagram So the Line Breaks Stay Put

Press Return (iPhone) or Enter (Android) at the end of each line while you type your caption, and make sure nothing sits after the last letter or emoji on that line, not even a space. For an empty gap between paragraphs, put a full stop or a single emoji on its own line, because Instagram tends to drop lines that hold nothing but a space.

The next thing worth knowing is that the trouble almost never comes from the key you press. It comes from the invisible space you left behind. Instagram trims spaces when it saves a caption, and a stray space at the end of a line, or a 'blank' line that's really just a space, is what makes your neat paragraphs collapse into one block after you post.

Adding line breaks on an iPhone

On an iPhone the Return key is sometimes hidden behind a different label, which is why so many people think line breaks aren't possible in the app.

  1. Open Instagram, start a new post and go through to the screen where you write the caption.
  2. Type your first line. Stop straight after the last word or emoji, with no space.
  3. Look at the bottom right of the keyboard. If it says 'return', tap it to start a new line.
  4. If it says 'done' instead, tap the key that switches to the numbers keyboard. Return sits in the bottom right corner there.
  5. For a visible gap between paragraphs, type a full stop or one emoji on its own line, then tap return again.
  6. Tap OK or the tick at the top, then check the preview before you share.

Adding line breaks on Android

Android keyboards are simpler here. Gboard, Samsung Keyboard and most others show an Enter key with a bent arrow on it.

  1. Open the caption box on your new post or Reel.
  2. Type a line and finish it on the last character, with no space after it.
  3. Tap the Enter key (the bent arrow) to drop to the next line.
  4. If your keyboard shows a send or tick icon in that spot, long-press it or check the keyboard's settings for a line break option. Keyboards differ by brand.
  5. Use a full stop or single emoji for any empty line you want people to see.
  6. Share, then open the post on your profile to see how it landed.

If a menu or key label looks different on your phone, search your keyboard's settings for the word 'Enter' or 'Return'. Phone makers move these around.

The catch: Instagram trims your spaces

Here's the rule most guides skip: a space at the end of a line can glue that line to the next one. Instagram cleans up spaces when it saves, so a line that ends in a space, or a gap line that only contains a space, can vanish and pull your paragraphs together. End every line on its last letter or emoji. If you want air between paragraphs, give the empty line something to hold: a full stop, a dot in the middle of the line, or a single emoji.

Write it somewhere else first, then paste

A lot of people write the whole caption in their phone's Notes app and paste it into Instagram. It's a calm way to work. You can see every line, fix typos without fighting the small caption box, and keep a copy in case the app closes mid-post.

Here's the routine I'd use:

  1. Write the caption in Notes, Google Keep or any plain text app.
  2. Read each line and delete any space after the last character.
  3. Replace each empty line with a full stop or a single emoji.
  4. Put your hashtags at the very end, after the last paragraph.
  5. Select all, copy, and paste into the Instagram caption box.
  6. Check the preview before you tap Share.

Captions can be up to 2,200 characters long, so there's room for a full story with breathing space. If you're writing close to that limit, a character counter for Instagram saves you from losing the last line when you paste.

What about invisible characters and spacing tricks?

You'll find advice telling you to paste a special 'invisible' character to force a blank line. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Instagram changes how it displays these characters, so a trick that worked last year can leave a strange box or a squashed caption today. I wouldn't build a whole account style on one.

If you want to try one, test it before it goes on a post that matters. Preview the caption carefully, or post to a private test account first and look at it on both an iPhone and an Android phone if you can borrow one. The full stop or single emoji method is less clever, but it works every time.

Work with me

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

The same goes for fancy letter styles. Text from a font generator can look striking, but it can also break your line spacing and it's hard for screen readers. Use it for a word or two, not a whole caption.

Spacing that helps people read

Line breaks aren't only about looks. A caption with short paragraphs is easier to read on a small screen, and people are more likely to reach the question or call to action at the end. A few habits that help:

  • Put your strongest line first, because only the start shows before 'more'.
  • Keep paragraphs to one idea each, often a single sentence.
  • Use a gap line before your question, so it stands out.
  • Keep hashtags at the end, after the last line of text, so they don't break up the story.
  • Read it once on your phone before posting. If it looks like a wall of text to you, it'll look that way to your followers too.

For more on what to put in those lines, see captions that get people talking.

My advice

If it were my account, I'd write every caption in Notes first, end each line on its last character, and use a single emoji for the gaps. It's dull, it's reliable, and you'll never see your paragraphs collapse again.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Instagram remove my line breaks?

Usually because a space was left at the end of a line or an empty line held only a space. Instagram trims spaces when it saves, so finish each line on its last character and give empty lines a full stop or emoji.

Where is the Return key on the iPhone Instagram keyboard?

It sits in the bottom right of the keyboard. If you see 'done' there instead, switch to the numbers keyboard and Return appears in that corner.

Can I add an empty line between paragraphs?

Yes, but don't leave the line empty or with just a space. Put a full stop or a single emoji on it so Instagram keeps it.

Can I indent the first line of a caption?

No. Instagram removes spaces at the start of a line. Use an emoji or a simple symbol at the start instead if you want a visual marker.

Do invisible characters work for spacing?

Sometimes, but Instagram changes how it shows them, so they're not reliable. Test on a private account or check the preview before you use one on a real post.
