To delete messages on Discord, right-click the message (or hover and click the three dots) and choose Delete Message; on a phone, press and hold it instead. What people miss: deleting is permanent, and if the message breaks Discord's rules you should report it first, because Discord can't recover it afterwards.
We've all sent something in Discord we'd rather take back: a typo in an announcement, a link posted in the wrong channel, or a reply meant for a different server. If you look after a community for your business or your creator brand, you'll also need to clear out other people's spam now and then.
Deleting a message only takes a couple of taps, but there's one decision worth making before you do it, and it's the one most people skip. I'll go through the steps on computer and phone, what moderators can remove, and why reporting first can matter more than deleting.
Deleting your own Discord message on a computer
Discord's moderation guide gives two ways in on desktop. Use whichever feels quicker:
- Find the message in the channel or direct message.
- Right-click anywhere in the message, or hover over it and click the three dots that appear on its right.
- Choose Delete Message from the menu.
- Confirm when Discord asks.
The message disappears from the chat for everyone in that conversation.
Deleting a Discord message on your phone
- Open the Discord app and go to the chat.
- Press and hold on the message you want gone.
- Tap Delete Message in the menu that pops up.
- Confirm.
Same result, same permanence, just a long press instead of a right-click.
If the only problem is a spelling slip or a wrong date, think about fixing it rather than removing it. In a busy channel, a message that suddenly disappears can leave replies hanging with no context, and people in your community may wonder what they missed. A quick correction keeps the thread readable and shows you're on top of things.
Removing other people's messages in a Discord server
This is where permissions come in. Discord's guidance says deleting someone else's message requires the Manage Messages permission, and its channel permissions guide describes that permission as letting members manage messages by other members. If you can't see Delete Message on someone else's post, you don't have it.
Server owners can hand this permission to a moderator role. If you're setting up a team to help run your community, my guide to creating roles and permissions on Discord shows how to build a moderator role without giving away more control than you mean to.
One catch Discord mentions: on servers that require two-factor authentication (2FA) for moderators, sensitive permissions such as Manage Messages are switched off for anyone who hasn't set it up. If a moderator says the option has vanished, that's the first thing to check.
Report first, then delete, if a Discord message breaks the rules
Here's the part I'd want every community manager to read. Discord says that if a message breaks its community guidelines or terms of service, you should report it. Messages deleted without turning on the report option are unrecoverable, even by Discord, and they can't be used to show that someone broke the terms.
So if someone posts something abusive, threatening or harmful, don't rush to wipe it. Report it first so there's a record, then remove it. My walkthrough on reporting someone on Discord covers that step. If you're ever in danger, contact the police as well as the platform.

Clearing a spammer's Discord message history
Discord doesn't describe a general select-many-and-delete button for everyday members. What it does offer moderators is an option inside the Ban dialog to choose how much of that user's message history to delete when you ban them.
Discord's own advice is to delete no message history unless the user is spamming inappropriate messages or content. That's sensible: if you wipe a member's whole history, you can leave holes in old conversations that other people were part of.
What deleting a Discord message does and doesn't do
| Question | Answer from Discord's guidance |
|---|---|
| Can I undo a delete? | No, it permanently removes the message from Discord |
| Can Discord get it back? | Not if it was deleted without the report option |
| Can I delete other people's messages? | Only with the Manage Messages permission |
| Can moderators bulk-clear a spammer? | Yes, through the Ban dialog's message history option |
| Does the Audit Log forget it? | Audit Log entries can't be deleted or edited |
That last row matters for server owners. Moderator actions show up in the Audit Log, and Discord says entries there can't be deleted or edited, so you keep a record of who did what.
Before you delete messages on Discord: a quick checklist
- Is it your own typo? Delete it, or simply edit and fix it.
- Is it someone else's spam? Delete it if you have Manage Messages.
- Is it abuse, a threat or something that breaks the rules? Report it first.
- Is one person flooding the server? Consider a ban with message history removal.
- Is someone bothering you in private? Blocking may help more than deleting.
On that last point, my guide on blocking someone on Discord explains what the other person can and can't see once you do.
If the Delete Message option is missing on Discord
- Check who sent the message. Without Manage Messages you can only remove your own.
- Check your role. Ask the server owner whether your moderator role includes Manage Messages in that channel.
- Check two-factor authentication if the server requires it for moderators.
- Update the app, then try the right-click or long-press again.
Frequently asked questions
How do I delete a message on Discord?
On a computer, right-click the message or hover and click the three dots, then choose Delete Message. On a phone, press and hold the message and tap Delete Message.
Can I delete someone else's message on Discord?
Only in a server where you have the Manage Messages permission. Without it, you can only delete messages you sent.
Can deleted Discord messages be recovered?
No. Discord says deleting removes the message permanently, and messages deleted without the report option can't be recovered, even by Discord.
Should I report a message before deleting it?
Yes, if it breaks Discord's rules. Deleting without reporting leaves no record Discord can use, so report it first, then remove it.
Can I delete lots of messages at once on Discord?
Discord's guidance doesn't describe a bulk delete for everyday members. Moderators can remove a user's message history through the Ban dialog, which Discord suggests only for spam.
