To delete an Instagram chat on your phone, tap Messages, tap and hold the conversation, tap Delete and confirm. On a computer, open the chat, click the information icon and choose Delete Chat. Instagram says this only deletes it for you; other people still see it in their inbox.
A cluttered inbox is a small daily drag, especially when you're juggling customer questions, collaborators and friends in the same place. Clearing out old conversations is quick, but Instagram has a couple of rules that surprise people, and the biggest is that deleting a chat doesn't delete it for the other person.
The steps below come from Instagram's Help Centre. I've also covered unsending, because it's what most people want when they've sent something they regret.
Deleting an Instagram chat from your inbox on a phone
On the Instagram app, Instagram describes it like this:
- Tap Messages at the bottom of the app.
- Tap and hold the conversation you'd like to delete.
- Tap Delete.
- Tap Delete again to confirm.
Instagram says that once you delete a conversation it will no longer be visible in your inbox. Menus can vary a little by app version, but the tap and hold on a conversation is the gesture to look for.
Deleting an Instagram chat on a computer
- Click Messages on the left.
- Click the conversation you'd like to delete.
- Click the information icon in the top right of your chat.
- Click Delete Chat, then click Delete to confirm.
What deleting an Instagram conversation does and doesn't do
This is the part to read twice. Instagram says deleting a conversation in your inbox only deletes it for you. It will still appear in the inbox of the other people in the conversation.
So deleting is tidying, not erasing. If you've shared something you wish you hadn't, deleting the chat won't take it off the other person's screen.
Instagram also says your Data Download file doesn't include messages that you've deleted from your Instagram account. If you might ever want a record of an important conversation, such as an agreement with a client, save what you need before you delete.
Unsending a single Instagram message instead of the whole chat
When it's one message you want gone, unsending is the better tool. Instagram's computer steps are:
- Click Messages on the left.
- Select the conversation and go to the message you'd like to unsend.
- Click Options next to the message.
- Click Unsend, then click Unsend again to confirm.
Instagram says that once you unsend a message it will no longer be visible to the people included in the chat. But it adds a caution: the people you sent it to may have already seen your message. Unsent messages, like deleted ones, aren't included in your Data Download file either.
| Delete a chat | Unsend a message | |
|---|---|---|
| What goes | The whole conversation, from your inbox | One message, from the chat |
| Who it affects | Only you | People included in the chat |
| Can others have already seen it | They still have the conversation | Yes, they may have seen it |

Getting rid of spam and unwanted Instagram conversations
Sometimes the chat you want to clear is a pushy message from a stranger. Instagram keeps suspected spam in a separate place. On a phone, tap Messages, tap Requests in the top right, then tap Spam. From there you can tap Edit and Delete all, or open a thread and choose Block, Leave, Delete or Accept.
Instagram says you won't get notifications for spam. If you're also thinking of blocking the sender, my page on whether messages disappear when you block someone on Instagram explains what to expect.

Reporting an Instagram chat before you delete it
If the conversation is abusive, don't just delete it. Instagram says you can report a single message, or an entire one-to-one conversation, but not a whole group chat. Report first, then delete. Instagram says it reviews up to 30 of the most recent messages in a reported conversation, and that reports are anonymous apart from intellectual property reports.
If someone is threatening you, report them in the app and contact the police. Keep a note of what happened for your own records.
Deciding between delete, unsend and report for an Instagram chat
The three actions sound alike, so here's a simple way to choose. Delete when you just want a conversation out of your own inbox and don't mind the other person keeping their copy. Unsend when one message was a mistake, such as a wrong link or a note meant for someone else. Report when the content is abusive or breaks Instagram's rules.
Instagram's help also mentions Meta Quest headsets. If you use Instagram there, you press and hold a chat and then choose Delete, and you press and hold a message to unsend or report it. Most of us will never need that, but it explains why the wording differs on some screens.
Keeping an Instagram inbox tidy when you run a business
If customers reach you through Instagram, treat the inbox like a shared desk. Before clearing a conversation, check whether it holds an order detail, an address or an agreement you may need later, and copy it somewhere safe first. Since Instagram says deleted messages won't appear in your data download either, a deleted chat is gone from your side for good.
A calm weekly tidy works better than a panicked clear-out. Go through your requests, delete the spam in one go, and leave anything unresolved where you can see it.
If you can't delete an Instagram chat
- Make sure you tap and hold the conversation in your inbox, not inside the chat.
- Update the app and restart your phone if the delete option doesn't appear.
- Try Wi-Fi and mobile data in turn, in case a weak connection is stopping the action finishing.
- If it still won't work, you can report a problem through Menu, Help and Report a Problem.
- Remember the chat will still show for the other person, so it can look as if nothing has changed on their side.

Can I report an Instagram chat instead?
