Endpoint Security Software (2026): 10 Options for Small Firms

Endpoint security software protects laptops, desktops, servers and phones from malware, ransomware and intruders, and the better products now detect and respond to attacks instead of just scanning files. For a small or mid-size firm, the real choice is a big EDR or XDR platform versus a package built for smaller teams. Ten options follow in no particular order.

Antivirus used to mean a scanner that checked files against a list of known threats. Endpoint security software today watches what every device does, spots behaviour that looks like an attack, and lets you isolate a machine and investigate it, often with AI doing the first pass and sometimes with a human analyst on call.

This list is for small and mid-size businesses choosing protection for their own devices. The ten products below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from each vendor's own website, read as of Oct 2026. If your staff also connect from home or on the road, my guide to VPNs for business covers that side.

Endpoint protection products at a glance

I checked the free plan column on each vendor's own website, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page names a free plan, a free version or an open source edition. Trial only means the page names a time-limited free trial. Not stated means the page I read named neither, so check the vendor's own site before you sign up.

Ten endpoint security products for small and mid-size firms

Check Point Harmony

Best for: Organisations that want ransomware protection, full disk encryption and a check on which generative AI tools staff use, from one endpoint agent.

CrowdStrike Falcon

Best for: Teams wanting an established EPP and EDR platform that pairs adversary intelligence with AI, and also secures AI agents, models and prompts.

Cynet

Best for: Smaller firms, and the managed service providers looking after them, wanting one AI-powered security platform instead of several separate tools.

ESET

Best for: Small firms that want to start with modern endpoint protection and add extended detection modules later, with a try-before-you-buy option.

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint

Best for: Businesses running mixed device estates that want multiplatform detection and response alongside unified endpoint management, so security and IT work together.

SentinelOne

Best for: Security teams wanting autonomous endpoint and identity security through a single lightweight agent, with cloud and AI security on the same platform.

ThreatDown (Malwarebytes)

Best for: Lean IT teams wanting endpoint, email and network activity in one consolidated view, with MDR analysts who step in when nobody's watching.

Trend Micro

Best for: Firms protecting endpoints, servers, email, cloud and networks together, with native EDR and XDR now sold under the TrendAI Vision One name.

VIPRE

Best for: Businesses as worried about email attacks as device threats, wanting email security, endpoint protection and AI tool governance from one vendor.

WatchGuard

Best for: Firms wanting prevention-first EDR that blocks ransomware, zero-day and fileless attacks, with add-on modules for patch management and data protection.

Two familiar endpoint names have changed

Here's what surprised me reading the vendor pages. The Cybereason address now opens a LevelBlue page headed Cybereason is Now LevelBlue, telling existing customers their endpoint protection stays in place with no action needed. Malwarebytes sells to businesses as ThreatDown, and the Trend Micro endpoint page now carries the TrendAI name.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

The pitch has shifted too. CrowdStrike now titles its page Agentic Endpoint Security, and several vendors sell protection for the AI tools your staff use, not only for the devices themselves. So before any demo, ask who owns the product, what it's called today, and whether the AI features are part of the core product or an add-on.

EDR platform or a small-business security package

  • EDR and XDR platforms. Detection and response across endpoints, and often email, cloud and identity too. They suit firms with someone in-house, or a partner, who'll act on the alerts.
  • SMB-first packages. Built for small IT teams and the managed service providers who look after them, usually with simpler consoles and managed detection and response on offer.
  • Managed detection and response (MDR). Analysts who watch your alerts and act when something happens at three in the morning. If nobody in your firm can do that, MDR matters more than any feature list.

One vendor's home page quotes an IT manager at a non-profit with 6 locations and 320 endpoints who says the service saves him 5+ hours a week. That's the real test for a small team: does the tool take work off your plate, or add a dashboard nobody has time to read?

Endpoint tools stop attacks on the device, but stolen logins walk straight past them. My guide to open source password managers covers that gap.

Questions to ask before rolling out an endpoint agent

  1. Coverage. Which operating systems, servers and mobile devices does the agent protect, and does it reach cloud workloads?
  2. Detection and response. Does it only block threats, or can you isolate a device, investigate and roll back changes?
  3. Who responds. Is managed detection and response included, an add-on, or not offered at all?
  4. Weight. How heavy is the agent on older laptops, and how is it deployed and updated across the firm?
  5. AI and data. Can it see which AI tools staff use, and does it protect the data they paste into them?

Do you make endpoint security software? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.

My plain advice on endpoint protection for a small firm

Decide who'll respond to alerts before you pick a product. If you've got security people, an EDR or XDR platform gives them depth. If you haven't, choose a package with managed detection and response, or work through a managed service provider, because an alert nobody reads protects nothing.

Then run a trial on a handful of real machines, including your oldest laptop, and check the agent doesn't slow people down. Half the vendors here name a free trial on their own pages, so there's no reason to buy blind.

Frequently asked questions

What is endpoint security software?

It's software that protects devices such as laptops, desktops, servers and phones from malware, ransomware and intruders, and lets you detect, investigate and respond to attacks on them.

What's the difference between EDR and antivirus?

Antivirus mainly blocks known malicious files. EDR, short for endpoint detection and response, records what happens on each device so you can spot unusual behaviour, investigate it and contain the device.

What is XDR?

Extended detection and response pulls signals from endpoints plus email, cloud, identity and network into one place, so an attack that crosses several systems shows up as one incident.

Do small businesses need EDR?

Ransomware hits small firms too, and thinner protection makes them an easier target. A small firm doesn't need the biggest platform, but it does need detection and someone, in-house or managed, to respond.

What is MDR?

Managed detection and response means a vendor's analysts watch your alerts around the clock and act on threats for you. It suits firms without their own security team.
