To delete one ChatGPT chat, open the three-dot menu next to it in the sidebar and select Delete. To clear everything, go to Settings, Data controls, Delete all chats. Deleted chats can't be restored and are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. Deleting a chat doesn't remove saved memories or Library files, so delete those separately.
Sooner or later every ChatGPT user looks at the sidebar and thinks: I'd rather that wasn't there. A client name in a chat title, an old draft you've moved on from, or simply years of clutter. Deleting your ChatGPT history is quick, but there are a few traps, especially around memory, files and what OpenAI keeps afterwards.
This guide follows OpenAI's own help pages and covers every option: one chat, all chats, archiving, exporting first, and deleting the whole account.
Why delete ChatGPT history at all?
For most business owners it isn't about secrets. It's about control. A sidebar full of half-finished chats makes it harder to find the good ones, and old conversations can keep shaping answers through memory long after the details have changed. Clearing out the clutter also makes it easier to spot anything that shouldn't be there, such as a client's full name in a chat title or a pasted contract you meant to remove.
There's a team angle too. If you've ever shared your screen on a call with ChatGPT open, you'll know how visible those chat titles are. A regular tidy keeps that moment from becoming awkward.
How do I delete a single ChatGPT chat?
On the web:
- Open your chat history in the sidebar.
- Select the three-dot menu next to the chat.
- Select Delete.
- Confirm.
On the iPhone app, open the menu, press and hold the conversation title, then tap Delete, shown in red. On Android, open the menu, press and hold the conversation title, then choose Delete in red at the bottom of the pop-up.
The chat disappears from your account straight away. Neither you nor OpenAI Support can restore it, so be sure before you confirm.
How do I delete all my ChatGPT history at once?
- Open Settings.
- Go to Data controls.
- Choose Delete all chats.
- Confirm.
This includes chats inside projects, and it can't be undone. If there's anything you might want later, export your data first, because an export can't bring back chats that were already deleted.
Should I archive or delete?
| Archive | Delete | |
|---|---|---|
| Removes the chat from the sidebar | Yes | Yes |
| Can be undone | Yes, unarchive it any time | No |
| Still searchable | Yes | No |
| Changes how long OpenAI keeps it | No | Scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days |
| Needs confirmation | No | Yes |
Archiving is the tidy-up option. It hides a chat from the sidebar without deleting it, and archived chats stay until you delete them or a workspace policy removes them. You'll find them in Settings, Data controls, Archived chats, where you can unarchive or delete them. There's also an Archive all chats option next to Delete all chats.
My rule: archive anything you might need for reference, such as a finished client project, and delete anything you'd be uncomfortable seeing again. If you're unsure, archive first. You can always delete an archived chat later, but you can never undo a deletion, and a crowded archive does no harm because it stays out of the sidebar.
How long does OpenAI keep deleted chats?
A deleted chat leaves your account immediately and OpenAI schedules it for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days. There are exceptions: chats that have already been de-identified and disassociated from your account, and data OpenAI must keep for security or legal obligations.
What deleting a chat doesn't delete
This is where people get caught out. Deleting a chat doesn't remove everything connected to it:
- Saved memories: a memory created from a chat isn't automatically deleted with it. Delete the memory too.
- Library files: files saved separately in your Library need deleting from the Library.
- Connected apps: deleting a chat doesn't delete the original data in a connected app, and disconnecting an app doesn't delete past conversations that used it.
- Training setting: turning off Improve the model for everyone stops new chats being used for training, but it doesn't delete or hide any chats.
How do I export my ChatGPT history before deleting it?
- Open Settings, then Data controls.
- Choose Export data, then Export.
- Select Confirm export.
OpenAI says exports can take up to seven days. The file arrives as a ZIP, and the download link expires 24 hours after you receive it, so download it promptly. Self-service export isn't available in Business, Enterprise or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces, where the workspace owner handles it.
How do I delete my ChatGPT account completely?
If you want everything gone, delete the account. On the web, go to Settings, Account, Delete, enter your email or phone number, type DELETE, then select Permanently delete my account.
- Your data is deleted within 30 days, except limited data kept where required or permitted by law.
- Deleting the account doesn't cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription, so cancel those first.
- A deleted account can't be reactivated, but you can sign up again with the same email after 30 days.
- If you can't sign in, you can request deletion or a copy of your data through the OpenAI Privacy Portal.
How do I stop new chats going into my history?
Use Temporary Chat. It keeps a conversation out of your history from the start, doesn't create memories and isn't used for training. My guide to ChatGPT Temporary Chat explains the Personalized and Unpersonalized options.

What if I use ChatGPT through work?
Workspace accounts follow different rules. Self-service export and account deletion aren't available in Business, Enterprise or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces; the workspace owner handles those. Retention can also be set by workspace policy, which may remove regular and archived chats on its own schedule. If you're the owner of a small team account, it's worth deciding that policy on purpose rather than leaving it to chance, and telling your team what you've decided.
A monthly ChatGPT clean-up for business owners
- Export your data if you keep records of client work.
- Archive finished project chats you might need again.
- Delete chats containing anything sensitive, plus any memories they created.
- Clear old files out of your Library.
- Review which apps are connected and disconnect any you no longer use.
Copy this prompt
Before I delete my old chats, help me build a checklist.
Ask me five questions about how I use ChatGPT for work,
then tell me what to export, what to archive and what to delete, in that order.
Copy and paste this prompt
Summarise everything you remember about my business in bullet points,
and mark any detail that could identify a client or customer.
I'll use the list to decide which memories to delete.
Tools that help with ChatGPT housekeeping
A few tools make this easier. Google Drive or Dropbox is a sensible home for the export ZIP. A password manager keeps login details out of chats in the first place. Google Docs or Notion is a better long-term home for prompts and answers you want to keep than an ever-growing ChatGPT sidebar. And if your team uses ChatGPT Business or Enterprise, your workspace admin's retention settings apply on top of everything here.
Data questions come up in almost every AI project I run, and my AI implementation FAQ answers the common ones. If you'd like help putting sensible rules in place for your team, see how I work with business owners.

Frequently asked questions
Can I recover a deleted ChatGPT chat?
No. OpenAI says neither you nor its support team can restore a deleted chat. Archive chats instead if you might need them again.
How do I clear all ChatGPT history?
Go to Settings, Data controls and choose Delete all chats, then confirm. This includes chats in projects and can't be undone.
Does OpenAI keep deleted chats?
Deleted chats are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, except chats already de-identified and data OpenAI must keep for security or legal reasons.
Does deleting a chat delete ChatGPT's memory of it?
No. A saved memory created from a chat isn't automatically deleted with it, so delete the memory separately.
What's the difference between archiving and deleting in ChatGPT?
Archiving hides a chat from the sidebar but keeps it searchable and restorable. Deleting removes it permanently and can't be undone.
