To export your ChatGPT conversations, open Settings, choose Data controls, select Export under Export data and confirm. OpenAI then emails you a download link to a ZIP file of your chat history, which can take up to 7 days to arrive and expires 24 hours after you receive it.
Exporting your ChatGPT history is the closest thing to a backup you'll get. It's worth doing before you delete an account, before a personal account gets folded into a work workspace, or simply because years of useful chats live there. The process is simple, but two timings catch people out: how long the email can take, and how quickly the link dies.
Steps to export your ChatGPT data
- Sign in to ChatGPT on the web.
- Open your profile menu and select Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Under Export data, select Export.
- On the confirmation screen, select Confirm export.
- Wait for the email or text message, then select Download data export.
On Android the same option sits in the app's settings under Data Controls. The web is the easiest place to do it, because that's also where you'll open the download link.
The two timings that catch people out
| Stage | What OpenAI says |
|---|---|
| Waiting for the export | It can take up to 7 days to arrive |
| Using the download link | It expires 24 hours after you receive it |
| If nothing arrives after 7 days | Contact OpenAI Support |
So request it early, then keep an eye on your inbox. If you miss the 24-hour window, you'll need to request a new export and wait again. Check your spam and promotions folders too, and if your account uses only a phone number, the message comes by text.
What's inside the export
You get a ZIP file containing your chat history and other relevant account data. Open it and check the conversations you care about are there before you do anything drastic, like deleting the account. OpenAI is clear that an export can't bring back chats you've already deleted, so it only captures what exists on the day you request it.
Treat the file as private. OpenAI warns that downloaded data can include sensitive account information, so don't leave it in a shared folder or forward the link. If you've ever pasted client details or personal notes into ChatGPT, they're in there.
Who can't export from settings
Self-service export works on Free, Go, Plus and Pro, and in eligible Edu workspaces. It isn't available in ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces, where the workspace owner manages data access. You also can't do it while logged out.
If the settings route isn't available, there's a second door: OpenAI's Privacy Portal. Choose Make a Privacy Request, then the option for a consumer ChatGPT account, then Download my data, and follow the instructions. You'll need access to the email inbox or phone number on the account to prove it's yours.
Export before moving to a work workspace
This one deserves its own warning. If your personal ChatGPT account is about to move into a company's Business or Enterprise workspace, OpenAI says to request, download and check your export first. Once the personal workspace is removed, you may not be able to open an old export link or request a new one. Do it the week you hear about the move, not the day before.
Exporting just one conversation
The full export is all or nothing. If you only need one chat, it's usually quicker to copy the answer you need or create a share link for that conversation. Keep in mind that a share link points to the chat rather than giving you a file, so it isn't a backup in the same way.
Can you move conversations to another account?
Partly. OpenAI has a separate help article on uploading exported conversation files to another personal account, but that lets ChatGPT use them as reference material. It doesn't rebuild your old sidebar of chats. If you're switching accounts, export first and keep the ZIP, and set up your custom instructions again in the new account.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Where to keep the file
Once it's downloaded, move the ZIP somewhere you control and back it up like any other important document. An encrypted drive or a private cloud folder is fine; a shared team drive isn't. Rename it with the date you requested it, so if you export again later you can tell the versions apart. And delete the copy in your Downloads folder once it's safely stored.
When to export
- Before deleting your account.
- Before a personal account is merged into a work workspace.
- Before a big clean-up with Delete all chats.
- Every few months, if you rely on ChatGPT for work you'd hate to lose.
If privacy is part of the reason you're exporting, read my guide to how private ChatGPT is for the settings that control what's kept in the first place.
My verdict
Export from Settings, Data controls, then set a reminder to check your inbox, because the link only lasts 24 hours and the email can take up to a week. Open the ZIP straight away, check it, store it somewhere private, and only then delete anything. It's ten minutes of effort that can save years of work.
Frequently asked questions
How do I export my ChatGPT conversations?
Go to Settings, then Data controls, select Export under Export data and confirm. OpenAI emails you a link to download a ZIP file.
How long does a ChatGPT export take?
OpenAI says exports can take up to 7 days to arrive. Contact OpenAI Support if nothing arrives after that.
