To convert a Canva design to Google Slides, open the presentation in Canva, select Share, then Download, and choose PPTX (Microsoft PowerPoint). Upload that file to Google Drive and open it with Google Slides. Expect to fix a few fonts, and know that animations and embedded videos won't carry across.
Canva doesn't have a single button that sends a deck straight into Google Slides. What it does have is a PowerPoint export, and Google Slides opens PowerPoint files happily. So the trick is a two-step hop: Canva to PowerPoint, then PowerPoint to Slides. It takes about two minutes once you know where everything lives.
Step 1: Download your Canva presentation as PowerPoint
- Open your presentation in Canva.
- Select Share in the top right, then Download.
- Under file type, choose PPTX (Microsoft PowerPoint).
- Pick All pages, or choose specific slides with Custom.
- Select Download and save the file somewhere easy to find.
Canva only offers PPTX for presentations. If you started your design as a document, social post or whiteboard, you won't see the option. In that case, copy the elements into a new Presentation design first, then download.
Step 2: Open the file in Google Slides
- Go to Google Drive and select New, then File upload.
- Choose the PPTX file you just downloaded.
- Double-click the file in Drive. Google opens it in Slides.
- To keep a native Slides copy, go to File and select Save as Google Slides.
Google's help pages confirm that Slides can open and convert .pptx files, along with older .ppt and several other presentation formats.
What carries across and what doesn't
| Element | After conversion |
|---|---|
| Text and layouts | Usually fine, but check spacing on every slide |
| Canva fonts | May swap to a default font if Slides doesn't have it |
| Photos and shapes | Carry across as images and shapes |
| Animations | Not supported in PowerPoint, so they won't arrive |
| Embedded videos | Not supported in the PowerPoint export |
| Charts | Google converts embedded PowerPoint charts to images |
The catch most people miss: fonts and moving parts
Canva is upfront that a PPTX download may look different once it's opened elsewhere, and that you might need to install the fonts you used in Canva. Google Slides has its own font library, so if your brand font isn't in it, Slides quietly swaps in something else and your carefully spaced headings start wrapping onto two lines.
Two fixes work well. Either choose a font for your Canva deck that also exists in Google Slides, or accept the swap and spend five minutes adjusting line breaks. The bigger loss is movement. Canva says animations and embedded videos aren't supported in the PowerPoint export, so a deck that relied on slide animations will arrive static.
Should you convert at all?
Before you convert, ask why. If you only need someone to see the deck, sharing a Canva view link is cleaner and keeps everything exactly as designed. You can also present straight from Canva. Converting makes sense when a client or employer insists on Google Slides, when a team edits everything in Google Workspace, or when you need to drop your slides into an existing Slides deck.
Going the other way: Google Slides into Canva
If you've got an old Slides deck you want to redesign, Canva can import it. From your Canva homepage, open Projects, select the plus to add new, choose Import and connect Google Drive. Pick the presentation and select Upload. It turns up as an editable Canva design in Projects.
Converting to PowerPoint instead
The PPTX file you download is a PowerPoint file, so if your client lives in Microsoft Office rather than Google, you can stop after step 1 and send it unchanged. The same font and animation caveats apply: open it in PowerPoint yourself before sending, and fix anything that's moved.

If the converted deck looks a mess
- Check whether the problem is fonts. If every heading has jumped to two lines, change the font for the whole deck in one go rather than slide by slide.
- Look for images that have shifted. Group related elements in Canva before downloading so they move as one.
- Rebuild charts. Google converts embedded PowerPoint charts to images, so redraw any chart you need to keep editing.
- Replace missing videos with a link or a screenshot that points to the video.
Tips for a smoother conversion
- Use fonts that exist in both tools, such as common Google Fonts, if you know the deck will end up in Slides.
- Avoid stacking lots of transparent elements on top of each other; flatten complex graphics into one image first.
- Put any videos on a separate slide with a link instead of embedding them.
- Check every slide after conversion at full screen. Small spacing shifts are easy to miss in the thumbnail view.
- Keep the Canva original. It's your master copy if you need to make bigger changes later.
My verdict
Download as PPTX, upload to Drive and open in Slides. It's reliable for text, photos and layouts, but plan to fix fonts and accept that animations won't survive. If you only need people to view the deck, share or present from Canva and skip conversion altogether. Frequently asked questions
Can you export Canva directly to Google Slides?
Not directly. Download the presentation from Canva as PPTX, then open that file in Google Slides.
Why can't I see the PowerPoint option in Canva?
Canva only offers PPTX downloads for presentation designs. Move your content into a Presentation design first.
Will Canva animations work in Google Slides?
No. Canva says animations and embedded videos aren't supported in the PowerPoint export.
Why do my fonts look different in Google Slides?
Slides replaces fonts it doesn't have. Use fonts available in both tools or adjust the text after converting.
Can I import Google Slides into Canva?
Yes. In Canva, go to Projects, add new, Import, connect Google Drive, choose the presentation and upload it.
