How to Convert PowerPoint to Google Slides Without Losing Work

To convert PowerPoint to Google Slides, upload the file to Drive, right-click it and choose Open with, then Google Slides. Google says this makes a Slides copy and keeps your original, while double-clicking and opening it saves edits back to the PowerPoint file.

A client sends you a .pptx, your team lives in Google Drive and suddenly you need to edit it in a browser with someone else watching. Or you built a deck in PowerPoint and want colleagues to comment on it without emailing versions back and forth. Either way, you'll want to know whether to convert it or just open it.

Google's help pages describe both routes, and they behave differently. One keeps your original file untouched and one makes a brand new Slides copy. I'll explain which is which, so you don't overwrite something by accident.

Turning a PowerPoint file into a Google Slides copy

Google calls this importing and converting. According to its help page, converting a file from another program creates a copy of your original in Slides format, and you can then edit that copy in your browser. These are Google's steps:

  1. Go to Drive.
  2. Select New, then File Upload.
  3. Choose the PowerPoint file on your computer.
  4. When the Upload complete window appears, select Show file location.
  5. Right-click the file, choose Open with, then Google Slides.

Your PowerPoint file stays where it was. The new Slides version is the one you work on from now on.

Opening a PowerPoint file in Google Slides without converting it

There's a second option, and it suits people who still need the file to stay a PowerPoint. In Drive, double-click the file to see a preview. At the top, select Open with Google Slides. Google says any changes you make are saved to the original Microsoft Office file.

That's useful when a colleague or client works in PowerPoint and expects to get the same file back. It's less useful if you want to use features that only exist in Slides. Google also says that Microsoft files already in Drive can be updated without converting them.

Which to pick: a converted Slides copy or the original PowerPoint file

What you wantRoute to use, per Google's help
A separate Slides version to share and edit in the browserUpload, then Open with Google Slides to convert
The same .pptx kept unchanged, with edits saved back to itDouble-click in Drive, then Open with Google Slides
A PowerPoint copy to send out laterDownload as PPTX from the toolbar in Slides

If you can't decide, convert. You keep the original, and you can always go back to it.

Checking your PowerPoint slides after they land in Google Slides

I can't point you to an official list of what carries over perfectly, and Google's page doesn't give one, so treat the first conversion as a draft. Before you share the link, click through every slide and look at the things most likely to move:

  • Fonts and text boxes: check nothing has wrapped onto a new line.
  • Animations and transitions: reapply any that look different. My guides to adding transitions in Google Slides and adding audio in Google Slides show where those controls live.
  • Pictures and shapes: look for anything that has shifted or lost its cropping.
  • Embedded audio and video: play them to be sure they work.
  • Speaker notes: open the notes under each slide.

It takes a few minutes, and it's much better than finding a broken slide while a client is watching.

Sharing a converted PowerPoint deck from Google Slides with clients

Once the copy looks right, the sharing side is where small businesses gain the most. You can send one link instead of an attachment, and anyone you give access to sees the same version. Decide before you send whether people can only view the deck or can edit it, and give the file a clear name so it doesn't get lost among other versions in Drive. If a client wants a static copy for their own records, the PDF download mentioned below does that job well.

Going the other way: Google Slides back to a PowerPoint file

Google's presenting help page says you can download the presentation in PDF or PPTX format from the presentation toolbar. So if the client insists on PowerPoint, you can convert back at the end. Open the downloaded file in PowerPoint and have a quick check of the slides there too.

Why small teams convert PowerPoint to Google Slides

The reason I hear most is simple: nobody wants five copies of a deck called final-final. In Slides, everyone works on one file in the browser. If you're weighing up the tools themselves, I've compared alternatives in my guide to Google Slides alternatives, and my notes on creating a great PowerPoint presentation apply whichever app you end up using.

A quick word on confidentiality: if the deck contains client details, check who has access before you share the Slides link, and remember that a converted copy sits in your Drive as well as the original.

If converting your PowerPoint to Google Slides doesn't work

  1. Check the file really is a PowerPoint file and that it uploaded fully before you try to open it.
  2. Make sure you chose Open with, then Google Slides, not another Google app.
  3. If the layout looks wrong, go back to your original PowerPoint and convert it again, or tidy the Slides copy by hand.
  4. Menus vary by app version, so search Drive's help if a label has changed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PowerPoint to Google Slides?

Upload the file to Drive with New, then File Upload. Right-click it, choose Open with, then Google Slides. Google says this creates a Slides copy and leaves your original file.

Can I edit a PowerPoint file in Google Slides without converting it?

Yes. In Drive, double-click the file, then select Open with Google Slides at the top. Google says changes are saved to the original Microsoft Office file.

No. Google says converting creates a copy of your original file, so the PowerPoint stays as it was.

Can I turn Google Slides back into PowerPoint?

Yes. Google says you can download the presentation in PDF or PPTX format from the presentation toolbar.

Will my animations and fonts stay the same?

I couldn't find an official list of what carries over, so check every slide after converting and fix anything that moved.
