To change your Threads username, go to your profile, tap Edit profile, then Username, type the new name and save. If your Threads profile was created with Instagram, the username is shared, so changing it can change it on Instagram too and may affect some Threads features. Profiles created with Facebook change on Threads only.
Changing a Threads username sounds like a two-second job, and on the screen that's exactly what it is. What's less obvious is that for most people their Threads username is tied to Instagram, so one change can ripple across both apps. Meta's help pages explain the rule, though you have to read two of them together to see it. Here's how to change it and what to check first.
Steps to change your Threads username
- Open Threads and go to your profile.
- Tap or click Edit profile below your profile information.
- Select Username.
- Type your new username and save it.
On Threads.com from a computer, Meta also gives a route through settings: click More on the left, then Settings, choose your Threads profile, then Name or Username, edit it and click Done.
Will it change my Instagram username too?
That depends on how you created your Threads profile, according to Meta's settings table:
| How your Threads profile was created | What a username change affects |
|---|---|
| With an Instagram account | Threads and Instagram |
| With a Facebook account | Threads only |
| With a mobile number or email | Threads, and you can also edit your name from Threads |
Most early Threads users signed up through Instagram, so for them the username is shared. Meta adds a warning worth reading twice: if your Threads username is shared with your Instagram profile, changing it may impact certain features on Threads. And if you want the same username on both apps, Meta says the profiles must be in the same Meta Account.
Before you change it
- Check the new name is free on both apps if your profile is linked to Instagram.
- Update anywhere you've printed or linked your old handle: your website, email signature, business cards and other social bios.
- Tell regular collaborators, because tags using your old username won't find you.
- Pick something you'll be happy with for years, not just this campaign.
People can see how often you've changed it
Here's a detail Meta's help centre mentions that few people know. Its 'About this account' feature on Instagram and Threads shows a former username count: the number of times an account's username has changed, though not the old names themselves. Meta says this helps people judge whether an account is authentic. One change is normal. A long run of them can make an account look less trustworthy, which matters if you're building a business presence.
Name versus username
Your name and your username aren't the same thing. The username is your handle, the one people type to tag you. The name is the display name shown above it. Meta says that if you created your Threads profile with a mobile number or email, you can edit your name from Threads as well. For Instagram-created profiles, name and username both follow the shared rule in the table above, so changing either one on Threads can change it on Instagram too.
A good compromise for brands is to keep the username identical everywhere and use the name field for a short description, such as your business name plus what you do. That way your handle stays consistent while the name does a little marketing.
Your username is always public
Even with a private profile, Meta says your name, profile photo, username and bio are always public. So if you're changing your username for privacy, pick something that doesn't include your full name, and check your photo and bio too.
Choosing a good Threads username
For a business or personal brand, I'd keep the same username everywhere you're active. It makes you easier to find and mention, and it means people who follow you on Instagram recognise you instantly on Threads. Keep it short, avoid numbers that look random, and skip underscores unless the clean version is taken.

If the username option won't save
If the change doesn't go through, the most likely reason is the shared-username rule: the name may already be taken on Instagram, or your Threads and Instagram profiles may not be in the same Meta Account. Check your Meta Account settings, where Meta says you can also edit your name and username, and try again from there.
My verdict
Change your Threads username from Edit profile, but first check how the profile was created, because an Instagram-made profile shares its username across both apps. Update your handle everywhere else on the same day, and resist changing it often: Meta shows people how many times you have.
